Infernal Windows XP hijack

Please help. I have Windows XP Pro. It is obviously infected as I keep receiving virus warnings of all kinds. My keyboard layout has been changed and whenever I fix it, it reverts to its modified version, although this seems to be linked to my browser (MYIE). The virus or whatever also has a tendency of turning my taskbar option on and off, among other things. I have run ad.aware and registry mechanic, as well as the antivirus offered by my ISP, without System restore on before restarting, but to no avail… This computer was purchased from a third party and I seem to have acquired lots of their old problems…. I have often fixed things by myself, as when my desktop was hijacked, but old troubles seem to be compounding with time. Could anyone please guide me…
