Internet Options won't open

Hi,

I tried to open internet options from within IE7. IE7 froze, popped up an error message, offered to send to MS and finally closed.
The explanation from MS was that there was an error reading inetcp.cpl, and suggested chkdsk to fix hard drive errors.
I ran chkdsk and it did find and repair a sector error for inetcpl.cpl (among other errors)

Now when I try to open internet options from within IE7 there is a small box labeled Internet options that very briefly appears and immediately disappears.

In control panel the internet options icon is gone, however at the top of the list (sorted alpha) is an icon with no name or description that looks like what I sort of remember the icon to be. Trying to open it (with or without IE7 running) gives me a brief hourglass next to the cursor, as if it's about to load, then nothing.

From the run command inetcpl.cpl, control inetcpl.cpl both give me the same brief hourglass, then nothing.

I searched for inetcpl.cpl and found other/older copies (not in c:\windows\system32) that run what I recall being the Internet option dialog from IE6.

I had, at some point previously used the IE7 Internet options dialog so I recognize that it is different from what runs with these alternate copies.

Possibly related to this issue was my downloading and running a demo of a monitoring program called Eye Spy Pro.

What I've tried.

Spy-bot S&D 1.4 updated and scanned.
Ad-Aware updated and scanned
AVG (eiwdo) anti spyware updated and scanned
Windows Defender running, updated and scanned.
System Mechanic anti spyware updated and scanned
AVG antivirus always on and updated.

AVG anti rootkit (beta) installed and run.

It's probably the same as the last one, other having less programs running.

I'm not really sure this is a malware issue.

If you need any more info, I'm online and at the computer all day. If it's faster/easier, I can log into AIM or MSN messenger.

I suggest you do this: Uninstall Internet Explorer 7 to return to Internet Explorer 6 on Windows XP Click "Start," and then click "Control Panel." Click "Add or Remove Programs." Check "Show Updates" at the top of the dialog box. Scroll down the list and highlight the version of Internet Explorer 7 that you are running, and then click "Change/Remove." Reboot and let me know if that solved the problem.

I uninstalled 7 and reverted to 6 and appears to work properly. I had considered that step (uninstalling 7) but the scare list that windows puts up of programs that "might not work properly" had served it's purpose. I've always considered uninstalling and reinstalling an app to be a less than elegant way of fixing something, more of a brute force type of solution, rubs me the wrong way. I'll get over it. Thanks for pushing me in the right direction. Think I should try upgrading to 7 again? 7 had worked. Thanks again. Howie
