Hi hjk and welcome to the forums.

A couple of things here:

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This type of infection allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files without your knowledge.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever be trusted again. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

However, if you do not have the resources to reinstall your computer and would like me to attempt to clean it, I will be happy to do so. We may very well be able to get things cleaned up but I cannot make any guarantees.

The two main areas of concern are the lack of any Anti-Virus or security software of any kind for that matter. Have you ever had any on this machine? The other is that the PC has never been updated to Service Pack 2, which also leaves it extremely vulnerable to attacks of any kind. I understand that this could be because updating to SP2 on a machine this infected may not be possible. Many problems can occur in that update when the PC is not clean.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post.

I would highly recommend once you are clean, either through re-installing or manual cleaning, then getting an Anti-Virus in place, making any and all of the Windows security updates, and putting other protection in place is critical before returning to the internet. I can give you excellent recommendations for free and effective protection.

Regards,
Dave
Dave, Thanks for the quick response and the advice. I have been using adware for spyware and etrust for anti virus. The e-trust would not update correctly since late dec 06. I uninstalled it just before I sent you the log file. I was going to install computer associates internet security suite until I read some bad reviews about it. Systems running slow, system freezes, programs crashing, etc. The info on this computer is backed up. I will reformat, reinstall xp, install anti virus /spyware and update to sp2. Which anti virus / spyware do you use ? I have used mcafee, ca, norton in the past. I was looking at avg, pc-cillin. Anything but norton–it took over my entire system and slowed things down–like the federal goverment– Dave, THANKS AGAIN hjk
Hi hjk,

I am personally a former user of AVG, and am now using Avast (links below). I still have AVG running on one of the PC's in the house and in my opinion both are good. Seems like Avast is a little more robust though to me, and I like the interface better. Both have free versions. Both use minimum system resources.
I agree with you wholeheartedly on Norton/Symantec, check out this link:
http://www.thepcspy.com/articles/other/wha…_windows_down/5

Links to AV I use:
AVG AntiVirus
Avast Antivirus Home Version–Free

As I said before, make sure you at a bare minimum have an AV running, all of your updates done, and a decent firewall going before you start using your PC on the internet. Good luck and let us know if you need any direction in reformatting and installing.

Regards,
Dave
