I'm fairly new at this. I've got an infection that SpybotS&D & Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta remove only temporarily (comes back each time I go online, & I think whenever I reboot).

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Hello Spere , Welcome to the forum.

This is what I suggest you do.

Download CWShredder from my signature below. Unzip it on the desktop.
Open CWShredder and with ALL other windows closed, click fix.

Go here and run at least one of the online scans, allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.3 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.05 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode check Perform full system scan.
Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Sorry for the delay in replying, I’ve had to do this in pieces over several days (without going online except in the course of downloading the programs or doing the online scans you suggested).

CWShredder didn’t find anything.

TrendMicro HouseCall wouldn’t load on my computer, so I tried the other two instead.

I did Panda ActiveScan first, it found 10 items & disinfected 7 of them:

The next day I ran eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner which found and deleted two items:

Then I ran the Ad-Aware (found & removed 8 items) & SpyBot (found & removed 18 items) programs you suggested. (At one point, with SpyBot I got a message that “application or dll C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\msegcompid.dll is not a valid windows agent. Please check this against your installation diskette).

Lastly, I ran HijackThis again, and got:

None of this solved the problem. I've had the dialer popups appear twice while I was posting this. Help!
I suggest you do this:

Run HijackThis again and put a check by these.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinAuth] C:\I386\WINLOGON.EXE

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Search for and delete these files if listed:
C:\I386\WINLOGON.EXE

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY Listed Profile USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
I did everything as directed (except for the "delete offline content", as this button was not present anywhere I could find), but the popups are still there.

The current logfile is:

Let's see if you have a hidden hijacker.

Click HERE to download DllCompare. Start the Program with and click the Run Locate.com - be sure the \Windows\System32 directory is in the box and wait until the the blue text says it has 'completed the scan'.

Click the Compare button to start the next process. The results appear in two panes - files in the upper pane have been verified to 'exist', files in the lower pane were 'not able to be accessed'. Very few files should be listed in the lower pane when the Compare scan is complete. Click on each of the listed entries in the lower pane to select them. Right-click on the file and use the option Rescan. This will cause Windows Find to see if the file does exist, and then if so it will be removed from the list to reduce the number of identified files.

Click the Make a Log of what was found button and post the log here in this thread and wait for further instructions.
It displayed 2 files below, in both cases the rescan option said "0 files with a filesize of 0 bytes were found". The log is: * DLLCompare Log version(1.0.0.127) Files Found that Windows does not See or cannot Access *Not everything listed here means you are infected! ________________________________________________ C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mscloc~1.dll Tue Mar 8 2005 9:05:42a A…. 10,240 10.00 K C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\msploc~1.dll Thu Mar 3 2005 2:53:02p A…. 10,240 10.00 K ________________________________________________ 1,290 items found: 1,290 files, 0 directories. Sorry, I should have said already…. I looked for both files, and found what I think are matches for each: msclock32.dll 10kb size msplock32.dll 10kb size both were created on the same day, I don't recall if at the same time. Also, I don't know if it's of any significance, but when deleting the EXPLORER.EXE file you suggested earlier, I'd also come across (but left alone) two other files elsewhere, with that same name but with different sizes (which seemed odd?). The one you had me delete was 504 kb in size, the other two were 472kb (located in C:\windows\system32\) and 490kb (located in C:\windows\softwaredistribution\download\). Thanks for all this assistance, BTW.
Delete all msclock32.dll files found.

If you have trouble deleting them, boot in Safe Mode and try again.

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
I only found the one msclock32.dll file, but…. it only showed up in safe mode (standard mode searches, or using windows explorer in standard mode, didn't display it, even if "display hidden files and folders" was checked). And…. suddenly my keyboard has stopped working while I'm in safe mode, so I can't run a search for any msclock32.dll files in other locations. Using the mouse, I went to the one msclock32.dll file I knew the location for & deleted it & emptied the recycle bin. But I couldn't check for others. Then I rebooted & created a new log file (BEFORE going online). It says (see below) that the msclock32.dll file is back, giving a "just now" creation date & time. But again, for some reason it won't display for me while in standard mode. The pop ups were still here when I checked your reply a short while ago, I assume they're still here since the msclock32.dll file reloaded itself from somewhere else on my computer. Other than that, the only symptoms I notice are the keyboard not working in safe mode (it stopped ONCE before during safe mode a few days ago, but had started working again after I manually rebooted & again went into safe mode…. so I'd assumed it was an isolated glitch & forgot to mention it) and the msclock32.dll file not showing up anywhere while I'm in standard mode. * DLLCompare Log version(1.0.0.127) Files Found that Windows does not See or cannot Access *Not everything listed here means you are infected! ________________________________________________ C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mscloc~1.dll Wed Mar 9 2005 7:34:16p A…. 10,240 10.00 K C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\msploc~1.dll Thu Mar 3 2005 2:53:02p A…. 10,240 10.00 K ________________________________________________ 1,292 items found: 1,292 files, 0 directories. click Start>Run and type regedit tap enter key.

Regedit will open. At the top of the window click edit> Find> then type in the following into the window.

msclock32.dll

Then click find now.
When you find the entry right click on it and select delete, answer ok at the prompt.
Next, press "F3" to continue searching, if another instance is found, repeat the above steps, until you see the "completed searching" message.
I did that (your suggestion re regedit, but only found the one msclock32.dll file). I ran all the various checks, and found nothing. Then I rebooted, and the msclock32.dll file was back! And when I went online, so were the popups (& InstantAccess then appeared back in my programs folder) Frustrated by this, I tried something on my own: I'd noted the creation date on the original msclock32.dll, so I ran a search on any files created on that day (I hadn't conciously downloaded any programs or updates for several weeks prior). Among other things, I found an application called ewilnd.exe & several associated dat files. I deleted them all (after making disk backups in case I was making a mistake). I also found an 8.529 MB file called Dav.sig (dated a day's difference from msclock32.dll & ewilnd.exe), which I had no knowledge of having downloaded. I deleted it to. Rebooting, I got an error message saying "error loading EGDACCESS_1058.dll the specified module could not be found". I ran WinDoctor from Norton Systemworks. I rebooted again, no error message this time. It's been several days with no trace of the popups, & the InstantAccess folder hasn't come back. Thanks very much for the assistance, I think this all cured the problem. Hopefully, I didn't delete anything that will cause my computer to implode later (yes, I know it was risky & stupid of me to do…. but I DID back them up, just in case)
Hey, thanks for the information. I'm sure it'll come in handy

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
