First off I'de like to thank all the admins and students of this website for their hard work and dedication towards turning MALintoWARE! Secondly I have an oddity i just noticed when i went to run Defrag. There is no such program. It's not on the drive and when i search for it (defrag, disk defrag, disk defragmenter) i get nothing. I did go ahead and download a program called "Power Defragmenter GUI". Also, in my system tools folder off the start menu > Programs.. all I see is Security Center and no other apps that used to be there. Is it ok to use this third-party software for defrag, or should i download something better?
Hi, You may have missing systen files, I suggest you run the System File Checker to check all protected Windows system files. 1 Start 2 Run 3 Type in the box sfc scannow note the space between the c and the / is essential The scan will take about 20 minutes or so and if there are any missing or corrupted Windows Protected System Files found SFC will ask you for your Windows XP installation disc to copy the files from. If you cannot find your disc then it's OK to borrow one (just make sure it has the same level of Service Pack on it as is installed on your computer.) There are some work-arounds to this but getting the correct disc is by far the simplest method. Regards paws
Unfortunetly i had lost a large box with computer stuff in it during my move. Speakers, cd's, etc were all lost and i don't have anything like that. I have XP Pro and all i have cdkey/cd wise is home edition :wtf: . Do they even sell XP Pro with service pack 2, even if so I couldn't think of anyone off the top of my head with one. Hmmm.. any file website or anything else?
Hi , Yes, the XP Home and Pro operating system is available with Sp2 already on it and has been for some time (since the fall of 2004 as I remember) You could try your Home version CD (providing it has SP2 on it) if SFC asks you for the disc, or you could edit the registry to point SFC to the correct area of your hard drive. (i386) If you are experienced in editing your registry then this might be the next step. However if you are not experienced in the arcane world of the Windows Registry then I suggest strongly that you leave the Registry completely alone. Once false move and you could easily render your machine unbootable. When editing the Registry you are outside the comfortable Windows interface where things are made easy and there are re-assuring drop down boxes asking "are you sure you want to…" When you are in the Registry the machine will do exactly as you instruct it to do according to the embedded protocols, even if it immediately wrecks your machine! My advice would be (for the purpose of using SFC) to find your Windows XP CD or borrow one from a friend. If your disc does not include SP2 then you could easily make yourself one, it is not difficult but you will need to be able to follow detailed instructions accurately. To start, fire up your favourite search engine and search for "slipstream Sp2+XP" You will find any number of sites providing full and detailed information. Regards paws
