I have been cleaning up my computer for a while now. Alsocom was wonderful help with my hijackthis.log. But for some reason my computer files are fragmented really bad. I have ran the defrag program over and over again but it doesn't seem to clean it up, it just seems to rearrange everything. Does anyone know of a good possibly free defrag program to help me get this cleaned up. I am running windows xp. Thanks in advance.

a defrag dosnt clean anything up. it rearranges data that should be togeather rather than scattered all over the drive. makes for faster a HD read-write although you most likely wont notice a difference.
shelf life,
I am basing this on the graph on the defrag. Blue is contiguous files, red is fragmented files, green is unmovable files, and white is free space. The whole graph is almost red even after defragging. But when I view the analysis report it shows

So do you think it is fragged or is it ok and I am just basing it too much on a graph?
Most of the fragmented items are System Restore files and Temp files. It doesn't look bad at all.
Go to Start < Run and type cleanmgr.exe than click OK. Select C: It will run a clean-up which may take a while. When it's done, check all items except 'Compress old files' On the More Options tab under System Restore click Clean Up then yes. Click OK and yes.
Now run Disk Defragmenter again and it should look a little better.
If you still want it better yet, Run Disk Defragmenter in Safe Mode. This will take quite a bit longer though.
alsocom,
Thanks again, and you too shelf life. Everyone is so kind and helpful on this forum. I think I have defragged it as good as it's going to get. Thanks for all of the help.

ok alsocom I need more help…I have now download SP2 and my computer is now running like a snail…what is the deal…am I doing something wrong or is it just the download…is there anything else I can do to speed this thing up…let me know if you have any other tricks…thanks in advance
what you do is compare the xp machine to the SAFE configuration. To do this go to start -> run and type in
services.msc
When you find something that is different from the "safe mode" and your configuration, CLICK on the process at the webpage and read the discription carefully. If you think you may need it, or arent sure, just leave it alone. ( i had to leave 5 or 6 on because of my computer setup)
IF, something goes wrong, and say your dsl doesnt work, jsut go back and undo the processes that you changed, and go one by one….
Also, you can find some great xp tweaks by downloading xp tune 1.5 here:http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4194.html
****READ THE DOCUMENTATION THAT COMES WITH IT****
If that still doesnt help, post back and let me know
wng,
I went to http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm and followed the directions and disabled some stuff that I was sure of and I downloaded xp tune 1.5. I think that maybe helped in some aspects but this computer is still not running like before I downloaded SP2. When I try to access my email through msn or yahoo, it takes FOREVER to load the pages and when I try to click on anything like the inbox or anything it doesn't recognize the click. I can click and click and it is so frustrating I am tempted to uninstall SP2 again. Do you have any other suggestions?
Thanks
Tbaby
heres what you do at this site:
1. download hosts.zip and critical.zip
2. extract them. THen open them with notepad and leave them open in notepad
3. go to start-> run
4. type in services.msc
5. look for dns client. Right click it and select properties. Set it to manual. Then stop the service if it is running
6. go to my computer-> c:/windows/system 32/drivers/etc
7. double click the file that says "hosts"
8. It will ask you what program you want to open it with. Choose notepad
9. Now go to your hosts file that you downloaded. Click edit->select all
10. Then click edit ->copy
11. Now go to the other hosts file you just opened (the one in c:/windows/system32/drivers/etc)
12. ON THAT one, click below the words there, then click edit -> paste
13. Then go to the notepad file that you downloaded called critical.txt. Go to edit->select all
14. Then edit->copy
15. then go to the hosts file (the one in c:/windows/system32/drivers/etc) and click below where the text is. Then go to edit -> paste
16. Now save the hosts file and you are done

No, you are wrong…
What is happening is that msn and yahoo have avertisments. For example, MSN advertisements have the server rad.msn.com
If the hosts file WAS blocking msn.com, then the website wouldn't show up at all…. Trust me, that hosts file is helping you, not hurting you.
Otherwise, I don't know what is slowing those particular sites down. I am almost out of ideas… Let me sleep on it, maybe something will come to light.
