Sir, I had been using AVG Antivirus for about four years now, but recently it seems to take ages to complete the scan. what it would initially take for total harddrive of 20GB, now it takes more than an hour. I would like to have your opinion in this regard as to switch over to which one who is doing well. In one of your self hlpe forums I found three names includin AVG, Antivir, and avast! Should I switch over to antivir? I had also downloaded Clamwin, which is free, but that too is very slow, it takes about an hour for a partition of 4 GB? Please guide me! Thanking you, Ashfaq
All of the product brands that you mention are competent and worthy of high recommendation.

If your AVG is taking such extensive time in completing its scan, or if CLAM AV is taking that long on a 4 gig partition, you have some other problem going on that is probably interferring with the competent functioning of your machine overall.

No need to abandon AVG or jump to another product.
Instead, let's find out what's up with your machine.

Please Run the PCPitstop Full Test, here:

When you get your results, please post the "TechExpress Link" back into this thread in TomCoyote Forums.

After we have a better look at the functioning of your machine, we will be able to give more informed recommendations.

Since AVG is your resident AntiVirus, it is important to not interfere with its functioning.
Having more than one AntiVirus installed on a machine creates conflicts between the AntiVirus utilities.
Uninstall, via Add/Remove, any "additional" AntiVirus products you may have installed.
Keep any AntiSpyware utilities. They will not interfere. And keep your Firewall, but only one firewall.

Best Regards

Dear Sir,

As requested, I am attaching the link for your perusal. Kindly help me out.

Thanking you,

Hello Ashfaq Shaikh,

Your machine, as it is currently set up, may serve your needs for general browsing, email and many common "office type" applications, but will not give you good performance graphics/media intensive applications.
However, at present several "restrictive factors" exist that will compromise even the most basic computer functions.

The immediate "restrictive factors" include
– Hard Disk Fragmentation
– Background processes
– Small amount of Physical RAM installed
– Impaired Internet Connection
– Security is compromised by abscense of Operating System updates

There are steps you can take.

1.
Reboot into SAFE Mode and run you Disk Defragmenter on all four of your Hard Drive partitions, C:\, D:\, E:\, H:\
(Running Disk Defragmenter (3) three times in a row, on each drive, will improve the process much more than running Disk Defragmenter only once on each drive.

2.
Enable DMA (direct media access) if available
(In device manager, Click on Disk Drives - Double-click on Generic IDE Disk - Settings)
(place a checkmark in "DMA if available")
(if your Hard Drive repeatedly resets to removing that checkmark, then DMA may not be available (highly unlikely) or you may need to consider replacing your IDE ribbon cables to your Hard Drives with new/fresh 80 wire IDE Ribbon Cable)

3.
Disable unnecessary "background" processes

Realplayer RealNetworks, Inc. H:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe
Sun Java Update Sun Microsystems, Inc. H:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\jusched.exe
Bluetooth Broadcom Corporation. H:\Program Files\Bluetooth\Bluetooth Software\BTTray.exe
MSN Messenger Microsoft Corporation H:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe
slmdmsr.exe H:\WINDOWS\system32\slmdmsr.exe
Broadcom Corporation. H:\PROGRA~1\BLUETO~1\BLUETO~1\BTSTAC~1.EXE
Broadcom Corporation. H:\Program Files\Bluetooth\Bluetooth Software\bin\btwdins.exe
Google Inc. H:\Program Files\Picasa2\PicasaMediaDetector.exe
Avance Logic, Inc. H:\WINDOWS\soundman.exe

(you will still be able to use any of these functions by activating them "manually" as needed)

4.
Seriously consider uninstalling AVAST! and re-installing AVG AntiVirus.
(Both are good products, but AVAST! carries a higher "background process" loading and AVG will likely run without loading your CPU/RAM resources as much as AVAST!) (Important on "low resource" machines)

5. Get Microsoft Updates.
(since you presently have a rather impaired internet connection, you may benefit from ordering the MS XP SP2 CD and install SP2 from CD rather than attempting the large download) (Order the SP2 CD from Microsoft for about $9.00, here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx)

6.
After installing SP2, go online to obtain the additional Critical Updates and Patches

7.
There are additional adjustments to be made (to improve your Internet Connection and remove other applications and processes that may be restricting your machines function) but please accomplish the above listed steps first. Then Run a fresh PCPitstop Full Test and post the fresh TechExpress in your next Reply here in this thread.

Questions:
– It is unusual to be running your Windows Operating System from Disk H:\. Why are you doing this?
– Do you have peripherals that require Blue Tooth connectivity?
– Do you have a reason for dividing your 20gb of Hard Drive into (4) four relatively small partitions?
– Would you be willing to change your Hard Drive partitioning to allow for fewer but larger Partitions?

Best Regards
