Removal of Norton Antivirus/Startup error

I get un-removable RUNONCE entries into the registry for:
Live Update from Symantec LUsetup.exe
Also cf1delexe, cf1msvcr and cf1unicows
I have tried removing all reference to Symantec and Norton in the Registry.
I've tried disabling the RUNONCE entries using HJT, disabling System Restore, re-boot.
On all re-boots the four RUNONCE entries above re-appear.
The LU entry causes an error box on startup that says:
'You haven't typed "C:\PROGRA~1\Symantec\LIVEUP~1\LUSetup.exe -s -a -q -log -version" correctly.
There is no Symantec folder on my computer, I deleted them all.
I'm trying to get rid of the supposedly 'RUNONCE' entries that run every time and don't disappear.
I have run SymNRT.exe from Symantec, that was the first thing I did after searching
for a Add/Remove entry for Norton Antivirus (none) and uninstall in the start menu (none).
Thanks

Hello russg,

Let's try this first- don't panic if this does not work. Let's try the easiest things first.

Disable SpySweeper:
You have SpySweeper installed. While this is a great program, we need to temporarily disable (not uninstall) the program because it might stop our fix.
Right click on the SpySweeper icon in your System Tray (near the clock).
From the pop up menu, left click on Shields, this will open the program at the same time.
Click the "Internet Explorer" tab and uncheck the following:
  • IE Favorites Shield
  • IE Security Shield
  • Broswer Helper Object (BHO) Shield
  • IE Hijack Shield
Click the "Windows System Shields" and uncheck the following:
  • Memory Shield
  • Spy Installation Shield
Click the "Startup Programs" tab and uncheck the Startup Items Shield

Scan with HijackThis. Place a check against each of the following:
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [Lusetup] C:\PROGRA~1\Symantec\LIVEUP~1\LUSetup.exe -s -a -q -log -version
O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [CF1DelMsvcr] cmd /C del C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\msvcr71.dll
O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [CF1DelEXE] cmd /C del C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\Customer-5.3.1.8.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [CF1DelUnicows] cmd /C del C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\unicows.dll

Close all windows or browsers except for Hijackthis. Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable SpySweeper again.

Reboot.
Post back a fresh HijackThis log and we will take another look.
Hello Susan528
Thanks for the instructions.
I followed them, but was unsure of re-enabling Spysweeper before or after
the re-boot, before is the way you said it.
I tried many re-boots, re-enabling Spysweeper before and after re-booting.
My experience was/is that as soon as I re-enable the Startup guard of
Spysweeper, the four RUNONCE items re-appear in HJT, immediately.
The only way, so far to keep the four items from starting is to not
re-enable Spysweeper Startup protection.
I try to edit Startup in Spysweeper, but even if the four items are
unchecked, they still get immediately re-inserted in the registry
if Spysweeper Startup is enabled.
Following is HJT log. After re-enabling Spysweeper Startup.

Please tell me if you have the necessary information (license number, customer number, whatever) that if you uninstalled SpySweeper, you would be able to reinstall it. I have had three posts where person had to uninstall SpySweeper first.
Susan528. Thanks for the hint. You spotted the problem, Webroot SpySweeper Startup shield. Affirmative, I have the key and CD and can re-install SpySweeper. I think this is the thing I will do, uninstall and re-install. I'll let you know. Regards, Russg ************* I uninstalled, re-installed, now Spy Sweeper has cleaned out its' startup list and the offending startups are gone. Thanks very much. Now there should be some way to say this problem solved…..
Susan, Found this thread via Google and it hit the nail on the head. Spysweeper is the key. I ran Hijackthis and CCleaner multiple times in both safe mode and regular mode, but the following commands always showed up again. O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [CF1DelMsvcr] cmd /C del C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\msvcr71.dll O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [CF1DelEXE] cmd /C del C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\Customer-5.3.1.8.exe O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [CF1DelUnicows] cmd /C del C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\unicows.dll Finally did the uninstall of Spysweeper, repeated running Hijackthis and CCleaner and the commands are now gone. Reinstalled Spysweeper and all is once again good. Just wanted to say thanks.
Thanks again Susan258:
Here's the HJT log after the un/reinstall of SpySweeper.

Hi, Susan258. Thanks for the headsup on Java and AV and firewall. I was into ZoneAlarm for many years, but then their updates got flaky, the free one anyway. It is my understanding that the cable modem wireless has a hardware firewall. XP is also a in only firewall. I do a Kapersky free scan once in a while for virus/trojan/worm, or Panda activescan. My Norton Antivirus I didn't renew last month, I don't like programs that don't have an uninstall or add/remove entry like Norton. I recommend AVAST to other people, but don't use it myself, the free one. I guess I take risks, but the frequent updates of WinXP are, well, compliance, especially the Windows Genuine Advantage phone home. My experience/modus is to not update very much that which seems working OK. I have experience with patches making things worse, needing patches for patches. I really appreciate the heads up, and the help with my RUNONCE problem. I think my computer boots up faster now and it feels 'cleaner'. Remember the days when you had config.sys and autoexec.bat and a few TSRs? Now there's a registry with 1000s of entries. I'm afraid I really don't like XP over 98SE, I'm not looking forward to Vista. MS wants $100 every 5 years from 1 billion people. Or, how about a f-prot for DOS scan from a Bart PE boot once in a while? Thanks, Russg
The bad thing about Windows 98 now is that there are flaws that cannot be patched. So if you stay with Windows 98, or ME you are taking a risk there too. Life is just full of risks! :)

I have had fun with firewalls too. But I hate to rely on XP one when I can take advantage of free one.

You can test your firewall by here:

Here are some free firewalls including ZoneAlarm

Free Personal Firewalls
Kerio
Outpost Firewall
Zone Alarm Free

There is AVG too for free antivirus
Free Antivirus
AVG
Avast
