[Resolved] Respawning dll

Hello,

I had a Virus that hijacked my Firefox browser and was sending me to a webpage for the bogus Antivirus 2009.
I ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. It pretty much removed everything. I did a quick scan and then a full scan in safemode.
One Trojan virus kept reloading itself, but I think that I got it. I also ran, SpybotSD, and I have Norton Antivirus Corperate Edition.

I looked in my MSCONFIG Startup list and I have a couple weird startup commands consistently respawning. I disabled all but what I think are essential startup commands, but the one start up command keeps coming back. I think that it is a hidden dll that respawns it, but I am not too sure about registry cleaning, or what files to go at.

Startup Item is owumanitesuzupij
Command is rundll32.exe "C:WINDOWS\owumanitesuzpij.dll",e
Location is HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

I got rid of the owuman- dll in the windows directory. It has not respawned, but every time I start my computer, the startup command reinstates itself and it tries to run the .dll — I get an annoying error message on start-up. I would like to kill whatever is spawning the startup item.

I am not an expert, by any means, but I have some savvy with my computer.
Also, I just downloaded ERUNT and backed up my registry. I was curious about how you restore from ERUNT. It is a pretty basic tool that only offers backup options.

Hello and Welcome to the forum.

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix, Vundofix, or HijackThis fixes without supervision.

Doing so could make your pc inoperatible and could require a full reinstall of your OS, losing all your programs and data.


Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.


Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.



Next:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.


(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : Protective Programs

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

    Note: Combofix will run without the Recovery Console installed.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
"copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread as well.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.


Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Hi, I have to go off to dinner right now, but I will get to all of the instructions tomorrow (about 12 hours time from now.) I am excited to try and get this little annoyance removed. Thanks in advance for the technical advice. I'll update this post soon.

Ok I Ran Combofix:

Here is the log. I noticed afterward that SpybotSD was active in the Taskbar Notification Area. I turned of TeaTimer prior to the scan, but was not aware that Spybot was running "Resident" as well. Resident seems to be some sort of IE blocker, I rarely use IE. It was running during the scan, so I hope that it did not interfere.

You need To disable TeaTimer, it can stop our fix.

The best way is to do both, Right click the system tray icon and shut down. This will reset TT's registry snapshot. Then, open spybot in advanced mode and turn it off. When cleaning is done, open Spybot in advanced mode to turn back on. Once fix is completed in the all clear post!!


Copy/paste the text in the Codebox below into notepad:

Here's how to do that:
Click Start > Run type Notepad click OK.
This will open an empty notepad file:

Take your mouse, and place your cursor at the beginning of the text in the box below, then click and hold the left mouse button, while pulling your mouse over the text. This should highlight the text. Now release the left mouse button. Now, with the cursor over the highlighted text, right click the mouse for options, and select 'copy'. Now over the empty Notepad box, right click your mouse again, and select 'paste' and you will have copied and pasted the text.

Behavior. On Reload Norton Corperate reloaded (I need to turn it off in the startup on msconfig)
Also the DLL error came up.
I will go in MS config and disable the startup command for running owmanblahblah.dll
I have rebooted 2 times in succession, and it seems that nothing is enabling the start up item, although the command remains orphaned in the start up commands list. I will keep an eye on it and let you know if there is any change.

I missed the registry entry.

Copy/paste the text in the Codebox below into notepad:

Here's how to do that:
Click Start > Run type Notepad click OK.
This will open an empty notepad file:

Take your mouse, and place your cursor at the beginning of the text in the box below, then click and hold the left mouse button, while pulling your mouse over the text. This should highlight the text. Now release the left mouse button. Now, with the cursor over the highlighted text, right click the mouse for options, and select 'copy'. Now over the empty Notepad box, right click your mouse again, and select 'paste' and you will have copied and pasted the text.

I think the reason TEATimer turned back on, is because ComboFix set my boot back to a normal boot, which I believe reinstates all of the start programs.
Machine behavior seems good.

Anything else, besides my gratitude? If you have some time would you mind telling me what you did? I am just curious. I imagine there was more going on than I was seeing.

I went into msconfig and that owmuan–.dll comand was checked for start up again. :(
I gotta head off to work here in a minute or two. I will pick this back up in about 12 hours.

I need you to leave it checked to startup so we can see what is activating it.

Matter of fact, make sure everything is checked in msconfig startup. You can make a note of the ones unchecked so you can uncheck them again if needed.

Once activated:


  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : Protective Programs

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

    Note: Combofix will run without the Recovery Console installed.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
"copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread as well.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

I deleted that file quite awhile ago. That is why I get the missing dll error. The trouble is not so much the file, but whatever is respawning the start-up command. Sorry, to make a long explanation short, there is no C:\WINDOWS\owumanitesuzupij.dll.
