These results are from my Home computer. I used Windows add/remove programs to remove Nortons AntiVirus 6.0 then used Norton/Symantec's Remove Symantec software utility to clean out their registry items. Deleted their empty folders. Deleted as many of their registry leftovers as I could find with regedit. Installed Kaspersky's Internet Security 6.0. All is working well. I think however that there may still be a Symantec leftover being found by HJT. O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ccApp] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe" Please let me know if its safe to "FIX" it and if anything else is suspicious or not necessary and should/could be "FIXED." Note: "Quote" is just an old and safe dos program I've kept for many years. It gives me a famous quote everytime I turn on the computer in a dos window in WinXP. I have an intel P-4 1.9 ghz cpu with 1 gig of ram. hi RichShrimp, i think you made a good choice, norton is the last av i would use and as you see it buries itself deep in windows. scan with HJT, put a checkmark beside the items below, close all windows and click fix checked. O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ccApp] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe"
Greetings "shelf life" OK I "fixed": O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ccApp] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe" Should anything be done about the following 4 HJT items that refer to a "file missing"? Although the HJT report says "file missing" I searched my computer and see that the 3 files referred to do indeed exist on my machine as noted below: O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {e2e2dd38-d088-4134-82b7-f2ba38496583} - %windir%\Network Diagnostic\xpnetdiag.exe (file missing) (NOTE: I HAVE A FILE, C:\Windows\Network Diagnostic\xpnetdiag.exe) O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: @xpsp3res.dll,-20001 - {e2e2dd38-d088-4134-82b7-f2ba38496583} - %windir%\Network Diagnostic\xpnetdiag.exe (file missing) (NOTE: I HAVE A FILE, C:\Windows\Network Diagnostic\xpnetdiag.exe) O23 - Service: Kaspersky Internet Security 6.0 (AVP) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Kaspersky Lab\Kaspersky Internet Security 6.0\avp.exe" -r (file missing) (NOTE: I HAVE A FILE, C:\Program Files\Kaspersky Lab\Kaspersky Internet Security 6.0\avp.exe) I've seen other people on the forums with this "Service item" in their HJT logs. Perhaps its normal? O23 - Service: Security Center (wscsvc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe (file missing) (NOTE: I HAVE A FILE, C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe….WITHOUT THE EXTRA "C:\WINDOWS" I think this may be a leftover setting from the Windows XP Firewall which I no longer use, a Security Center service called wscsvc. I now use Kaspersky's Firewall which comes with KIS 6. Let me know if I should leave these things alone or not. Many thanks for your help!!!
hi RichShrimp, leaving these items wont hurt anything. if they were malware files we would delete them. for the 023 items: theres a bug in hjt that says file missing, when its really may not be. same for the 09 for this one: Security Center (wscsvc) make sure you have only one listed in the service panel called– Service Center. to do that do this; go to start>run and type in services.msc under the name coulumn look for: Service Center click on it, then right click and select properties, make sure the path to exacutable is C:\windows\system32 shelf life
Thanks "shelf life," I have one listing of "Security Center" not "Service Center." Properties are as follows: Description=Monitors system security settings and configurations. Path to executable=\SystemRoot\C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs Startup Type=Automatic Service Status=Stopped So I guess all is ok now. I'll add all current HJT results to the HJT "Ignore" section. Thanks so much for your help :-)
hi RichShrimp,

your good to go. some reference material for you; happy safe surfing.

Be careful of what you download, and where you download it from. Many programs come bundled with extra software.Learn more about the program, Does it come bundled with other "3rd party" programs? If you search hard enough you can always find a "clean" alternative to any software. Check this database:Spyware Guide or this: Library before installing free/shareware.

Make sure you keep your Windows OS/Browser current by visiting Windows update
occasionaly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. These will patch flaws/bugs that can be exploited.

Adjust your browser settings: Change your(active x) settings in IE. With IE open go to tools, internet options, security tab. Click on the internet globe, then custom level. Set the first option "download signed active x controls" to prompt, the next two to disable. Read more:
Working with Internet Explorer 6 Security
Many exploits are directed at Internet Explorer, you dont have to use it. Try a different browser. You can have and use more than one browser on your computer.
Like Firefox, Visit these two sites to test any browser you use. Browser Security Test or
Browser Check

Install a Firewall:A firewall will help to control what comes in from the internet and what leaves your computer to the internet.Windows XP built in firewall isnt robust as third part firewalls. Its important to know/learn what routinely needs a internet connection.
Zone Alarm is the easiest to use "out of the box." Unless you are familiar with firewalls, the others have learning curves.
Zone Alarm
OutPost Lite
Jetico Personal Firewall
Look n Stop

Outlook Express with the default settings is not secure. It will run scripts, download images etc, just like a browser, but this was the old Outlook Express. Service Pack 2 has made huge improvements to Outlook, but just like with Internet Explorer, you dont have to use it.
try Pegasus E-Mail.

Make sure you have and keep updated Antivirus software
Free for home users:
avast! 4 Home Edition Download
AVG free version 7.0
AntiVir Personal Edition
Clam Win

Download one or two of these, install and update before using:(if these are constantly finding malware, then you need to make changes to your browser and or your habits)
CounterSpy Free trial version
Spybot Search and destroy
Ad-Aware SE Personal edition
Microsoft Windows Defender
Becarful with spyware "removers and scanners"– there are many "rogue/suspect" programs that "claim to remove" spyware.Check here first.

AntiTrojan software to fill in the gap:
a2 free
AVG Antispyware (Ewido)
Trojan Hunter
Tauscan trial version

Other programs to consider:
Process Guard stop events/processes with user intervention
SpywareBlaster add security to IE
IE-SPYAD adds adware peddlers sites/domains to IE restricted zone
ATF cleaner (W2K,XP only) cleans out temp files, history, cookies etc.
