Some time ago I had Symantec AV installed and after one of the normal updates it started messing up. I eventually got tired of the problems and switched to Mcafee after uninstalling Symantec.

Unfortunately, I don't think symantec was completely wiped and I get an occaional Blue screen error on boot up (no codes). Screen just says serious windows error. I then reboot in safe mode and go through a normal restart and the system comes up normally. This happens about every 6 or 7 boot ups. I looked for residual symantec stuff in my add/remove control panel and discovered I also had about 10 blank lines preceding the normal list of programs.

I'm running windoows ME and have stopped the restore points, rebooted and then started restore again thinking I would clear out any problems there. But so far that hasn't solved my problem. I'm now thinking about using CCleaner to check the registry and at least get rid of the blank lines mentioned above.

Attached is a hijack log and any help would be appreciated.

To completely uninstall Symantec AntiVirus?
Problem: The solution to many problems with Symantec AntiVirus is to completely uninstall Symantec AntiVirus, then re-install. You can use these instructions to completely uninstall Symantec AntiVirus.

Solution: In order to completely uninstall Symantec AntiVirus and all related components you need to follow these instructions.
Note: This procedure will remove all Symantec products, not just Symantec AntiVirus.

1.Click on Start | Settings | Control Panel
2.In the control panel double-click on Add / Remove Programs
3.Look through the list of installed programs for any item that says either "Norton" or "Symantec" or "LiveUpdate". (for example "Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition" or "Norton AntiVirus 2000")
4.For each "Norton", "Symantec", or "LiveUpdate" item, select the item and click Add / Remove. Follow the instructions, and click Yes or Yes to all when prompted.
When you are done there should be no items in the list that say "Norton", "Symantec", or "LiveUpdate".
5.Click OK to close the Add / Remove Programs window.
6.Reboot your computer if it hasn't already automatically rebooted.
7.Delete the c:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus (or c:\Program Files\Norton) folder.
8.Delete the c:\Program Files\Symantec folder.
9.Delete the c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared folder.

If uninstalling Symantec AntiVirus using Add / Remove Programs does not work, you can use the directions on this Symantec website to manually remove all elements of Symantec Antivirus from your computer.

Hi Thanks for the response. I had already downloaded the Symantec file but had not run it. After your note I did run it and got rid of the directories you mentioned after the run. Funny that the program didn't do that but wth. I have rebooted about 4 times (also cold start) and so far no blue screen woes. I'll reboot again tomorrow to see if all my restore points are up to date. They get updated every 24 hours. I still have the blank entries in my add/remove list which I think appeared after I uninstalled symantec originally. Nothing related to Symantec in my Add/Remove list Thanks again for the help Jaconix

I did run Hijack with your sugestions and a log is attached. But after restarting the blues are back. Got the blue screen "Windows protection error - restart system" I started up in safe mode and after it came up I rebooted and the same thing happened. After the third try it came up normally (I guess). This has been a normal pattern.

Not that I know of. I have Frontpage and that has a server but it's not up an running and I haven't used it in quite a while. I usually shut it down when I'm finished. I also installed Teamspeak server for a games test but don't need it on my system now but this was installed after the blue screen episodes. I'm thinking if this can't be resolved I'll upgrade to xp home edition. My only concern there is if there's a latent problem it might carry over to the new OS. This PC is a second one I use for Games and my wifes Email.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PC Pitstop Optimize Scheduler] C:\Program Files\PCPitstop\Optimize\PCPOptimize.exe -boot

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

OK, I got rid of the 3 items. Actually I uninstalled the PCpitstop program which I had planned to do a while ago. Didn't really care for it. That got rid of the 04 entry for that. I used Hijack to delete the other 2 and rebooted to a normal screen. As I mentioned before this isn't a certainty to stay since I get by with 5-6 normal boots and then blue city. I also checked my Front page server and it wasn't active. I also have homesite on this system which I forgot about. I can uninstall the teamspeak server soon also since that was only used for testing the service. If you need another Hijack log let me know. The only difference is the 3 entries you mentioned Jaconix
