Twice in the past three days my computer has stopped responding with the following message: "WINDOWS XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM" I was able to get the computer back running by booting to the Recovery Console and running "chkdsk /R" which repaired what it said were errors on the drive and then rebooted to windows and all is well for now. As stated above this has happened twice in three days. Could this be happening because of spyware/malware/virus or is this more likely to be a hardware issue????? I'm posting my HJT log just in casre this is spyware/malware/virus related. Thanks in advance for the help.

Welcome to the forum, sorry for the delay, backlogged posts are a daily occurance. You have a few things going on that could be part or all of your problem, some malware and a trojan.

Lets start by doing this

Please download Qoofix by RubbeR DuckY from one of the following locations:

http://www.malwarebytes.org/Qoofix.zip or
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/Qoofix.zip

1. Unzip all files to a convenient location such as C:\Qoofix.
2. Go to the folder you unzipped all files and run Qoofix.exe.
3. Click Begin Removal and wait for the scan to finish.
4. If an infection has been found, select yes to restart your computer.

Finally post a new Hijack This log and the contents of the Qoofix logfile.
Thanks for the info…I'm having troubles now getting it to boot at all. I've removed the HD from my computer and am now running CHKDSK on it in another computer. As soon as I can ge tit to boot I will post the results of the Qoofix scan and another HJT log. Thanks, Dennis
Finally back up and running. Computer wouldn't boot to cdrom or do anything except boot to floopy. Re-flashed BIOS and installed HD in sons computer so I could run CHKDSK. CHKDSK found errors and fixed them. Reinstalled HD in my computer and things are running but are slower than usual. Here are the log files that were requested. Thanks for the assistance.

Dennis

scooter1,

Qoologic was not present on your system

My Websearch
and Weatherbug are not the best of programs and I would like you to uninstall them via the Add - Remove prorams in the Control Panel. You would be better off using Google for your searches and the program from the Weather Channel that contains no spyware.

You do have a couple of trojans that we need to remove.

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing :
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Download and install the 30 day trial of Ewido Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.

* Once you have downloaded Ewido Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
* Once the setup is complete you will need run Ewido and update the definition files.
* On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
* Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
* Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
* Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine <– Dont forget this
* Under Reports
* Select Automatically generate report after every scan
* Un-Select Only if threats were found
* Close Ewido Anti-Spyware <– Do not run the scan yet.

Open HJT Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, check these entries and click on Fix Checked.

Boot your computer into Safemode

* Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
* As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.
* Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE
* Then press the Enter on your Keyboard

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:

* Lauch Ewido-Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
* Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
* Ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
* Once the scan is complete do the following:
* If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
* Next select the Reports icon at the top.
* Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system
*** make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important
* Close Ewido

Still in Safemode, look for and delete the following two files.

C:\WINDOWS\CheckS02.exe
C:\WINDOWS\DH.dll

Reboot normally and lets run this system cleaner.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main - choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

I need to see the Ewido log and a new HJT log please.
Here are the requested log files.

Hello Dennis,

Your log looks good  The trojans are gone. All Ewido found were cookies.

You can remove this if you wish with HJT, they can be started manually when you need them and save you system resources.

If your still using Microsoft Money, then leave this one alone, if not , fix it.

Run this quick scan and post the report, it may show if something is hidden that is not showing up on your log.
Download and Save Blacklight to your desktop:
Double-click blbeta.exe then accept the agreement, leave [X]scan through Windows Explorer checked, click > scan then > next
You'll see a list of all items found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).
Copy and paste this log in your next reply. Don't choose the rename option yet! I want to see the log first, because legitimate items can also be present there, such as "wbemtest.exe"

Try this
* Click Start>Run
* Type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
* Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
* This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and will hopefully fix things. You may need your XP disc in your CD drive for this.

If none of the above helped, then I would say that it is possibly a hardware or windows problem, let me know and I can direct you to some excellent windows tech support sites that may be able to help you.
Here it is..I also ran the sfc /scannow. If everything looks good guess I will have to wait and see if this thing continues to crash. Thanks alot for your help…may be back in touch to get help cleaning up my son's computer. Dennis,

Blacklight came up clean, here are some tech support sites if you need them, just like Tom Coyote, there free but you have to sign up.

Are you a LSU fan, if so I will have to wrap this up before my wife returns as she graduated from Florida :D

Here are some free programs and tips for keeping your system up to date, and to help keep all the riff raff out of your system.

* Make sure that your ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE is up to date and run a full scan at least once aweek.

* Here are Free Anti-Virus Programs if you need one. Just install one because with AV software…MORE IS NOT BETTER.

* Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.

* Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

* Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and
give you the option to deny the change.

* IE- Spyad IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains
in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed,
although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

* Firefox Browser
It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use
them both. When it asks you if you want it to be your default browser, say NO and take the checkmark out of the box to ask you again. After you use this
for awhile, you will want to make it your default.

this has a good spam filter and is more secure than Outlook Express.

* Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't
access the internet without it.

* WINDOWS UPDATES - Enable Automatic Updates
Right click on MY COMPUTER/Click on PROPERTIES/ AUTOMATIC UPDATES and put a mark in the radio button
DOWNLOAD UPDATES FOR ME BUT LET ME CHOOSE WHEN TO INSTALL THEM.

* Go to START/ CONTROL PANEL> PERFORMANCE AND MAINTENANCE> REARRANGE ITEMS ON YOUR HARD DISK TO MAKE PROGRAMS RUN FASTER
This is the Windows Disk Defragger, run this maybe once or twice a month to keep your system running good. The first time you run it, it may take awhile.

Thanks for stopping by Tom Coyote , I'm glad I was able to help you.
Thanks for all of the help Ken, Hope you don't get in too much trouble with your wife becasue YES we are big "LSU" fans. I guess the "Mike the Tiger" site gave me away. My kids like to check out what "Mike" is doing from time to time. We live in Alabama and try to make it to Baton Rouge for at least 1 game a year. Sure is difficult sometimes to listen to the chants for "The Crimson Tide" and Auburn. Tell your wife good luck this year, should be a good game between two great SEC teams. Thanks again for all of the help. Dennis
