After booting two error messages appear in Windows immediately.

The messages are the following:

"Windows cannot find 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\Vxmtpq32.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search."

"Could not load or run 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\Vxmtpq32.exe' specified in the registry. Make sure the file exists on your computer or remove the reference to it in the registry."

Hi

Download SDFix and save it to your desktop.

It would be a good idea if you print out these instructions or write them down, as you wont have access to the internet.

We need to boot into Safe Mode:
  • Restart the computer.
  • as soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
  • Press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode:
  • Right click the SDFix.zip folder on your Desktop and choose Extract All,
  • Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the script.
  • It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
  • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum.

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt in your reply.
Thanks.
Hi jpshortstuff,

As it was not instructed, I haven't restarted the computer, so I don't know whether the messages are still there or no.
Here are the results from the 3 files you asked for.

Hi jpshortstuff,

My computer is running very well. The log on messages are disappeared. I can check, probably tomorrow, if the wi-fi connection works as well.

I have a few questions:
Is it possible that also my USB flash drives are infected? If yes, what should I do to clean them?
Which (preferably free) anti-virus and/or anti-malware programs do you recommend to use to keep my computer clean?

Hi jpshortstuff,

I ran ERUNT. When do I have to restore my registry with ERDNT.exe? (Sorry for asking too much.)

Running DSS took more time than previously, it stopped for a while druing 'Examining registry', otherwise the computer works well and faster than before.

Please find below DSS main.txt:

Hi

I ran ERUNT. When do I have to restore my registry with ERDNT.exe?

This is only an insurance policy. If (god forbid) something went wrong with your computer after performing that fix I had you run, then you would need to restore the backup.

(Sorry for asking too much.)

Don't be, if you aren't sure about something - ask. Better to be safe than sorry.

Is it possible that also my USB flash drives are infected? If yes, what should I do to clean them?

Is there any anything happening that makes you suspect they're infected? If you just want to check, Kaspersky Anti-Virus is probably like most anti-virus programs in that you can run 'custom' scans - where you can choose which drives to scan. Simply insert your USB device/devices, and select those drives to scan with Kaspersky.

Logs are looking a lot better  I will provide recommendations for staying clean at the end of the topic, once we know you are clean.

You don't appear to be running any third party Firewall software.

Install a firewall! Without a firewall you are very susceptible to being hacked, and people could gain access to your computer. If you don't have a firewall I strongly recommend you download ONE of the following:
1) Comodo
2) Agnitum
3) Sunbelt/Kerio

Your Java Runtime Environment is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5, The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save it to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially any web browsers.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u5-windowsi586.exe to install the newest version.
Reboot your computer after all these steps, and post a new HijackThis log. Also, please give a detailed description of how your computer is running and behaving at the moment, listing any remaining problems.

Thanks.
Hi jpshortstuff,

My friend makes me suspect that her USB flash disk may be infected because of my computer.

Not only the logs, but the computer also feels much better, although my Desktop is almost full with various programs. I will ask about it later.

Comodo is installed (as it will be clear from HijackThis).
JRE 6 update 5 had been removed with other Java applications and installed from the given path.

Please find below a new HijackThis log:

Hi BZsuzsi

Log looks good

The infection that you had wasn't the type that would jump onto a flash drive - but again, if you're not sure, scan it with Kaspersky or whatever else you have to hand.

Clean up with OTMoveIt2
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.
You can now delete any remaining tools.

Set correct settings for files that should be hidden in Windows XP
  • Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
  • Under "Hidden files and folders" if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • If unchecked please checkHide protected operating system files (Recommended)
  • If necessary check "Display content of system folders"
  • If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Click OK

Now that your system appears to be clean, theres just a few steps I'd like you to take to prevent any future infections.
  • System restore:
We will now clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:
    • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
    • Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.
    • Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
    • Select the More options tab
    • Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.

This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.
Make sure you do this now, as your System Restore currently has infected files in it.

  • Keeping your Windows up-to-date is crucial to your computer's security. Please go to the Windows Update Site (using Internet Explorer) and download and install all critical updates on a regular basis.

  • Use Mozilla Firefox or Opera as your internet browser.
These are more secure than Internet Explorer and can be downloaded for free from here:
    Download Mozilla FireFox
    Download Opera

  • Make sure you update your Anti-Virus software regularly, new viruses are being developed all the time.

  • Some more programs that it would be useful to have [OPTIONAL but RECOMMENDED]:

Download Spybot Search and Destroy 1.5 from here
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

SpywareBlaster is another real-time scanner that prevents most spyware from even being installed.
    Freely available: Download SpywareBlaster

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.
Also, please read this great article by Tony Klein: So How Did I Get Infected In First Place

Glad we could be of assistance.

Please reply to this thread once more if you are satisfied so that we can mark the problem as resolved.

Stay Clean!

jpshortstuff
Hi jpshortstuff, I tried to follow the thread. I ran OTMoveIt2.exe which deleted itself. I checked the settings for hidden Windows files. I created a new restore point, BUT in Start > Run > cleanmgr there is no "More option", if I press OK, I can only choose from the hard drives to clean up. :smack: I updated Windows and downloaded and installed IE7 for it. I downloaded and installed Firefox. I downloaded Spybot, SpywareBlaster, Winpatrol. And I read Tony Klein's article. Do I really need in addition to one Anti-virus and one Firewall, 4 anti-spyware programs (I have had Ad-aware and now I have the 3 recommended as well)? I will try to keep my computer clean! I am fully satisfied with the assistance. Thank you for all your help, :notworthy: Zsuzsi
Hi

Sorry, my instructions for System Restore were a little unclear. The dialog box with the "More Options" tab will occur after you have selected your drive (choose C:). cleanmgr will perform a short analysis of your drive and then will display the dialog box.

Do I really need in addition to one Anti-virus and one Firewall, 4 anti-spyware programs (I have had Ad-aware and now I have the 3 recommended as well)?
I will try to keep my computer clean!

Well, as I mentioned in my post, these are optional. It depends how much protection you want, and how fast your computer is. If you are worried about your system performance, then I'd only try one or two to begin with, perhaps just SpywareBlaster and Spybot. See if your computer can take that, and if you like the programs. SpywareBlaster is a great preventative program that will prevent the installation of malware. Spybot is good for scanning and cleaning your system when you want to, and has a real-time protection part that you can disable if you like. WinPatrol has real-time protection features, along with amy other features for protecting your system.

Glad we could help you :)
