Just recently got this problem, no idea how it came about.

Symptoms:
- internet explorer generating errors when running, then explorer.exe shuts down and starts running again
- after reboot have to enter Administrator password in order to get into windows
- spybot s&d and adaware both detect problems but cannot repair them (looks like virtumonde) even when running immediately after boot
- nod32 not detecting problems
- internet and programs running slower

Here is my log from hijackthis (I believe the problem to be some of the dlls that I can't remove):

Thanks for the help!!!
Hi dave_t,

- after reboot have to enter Administrator password in order to get into windows

Do you normally turn your machine on and boot straight to the Desktop?

You have a startup program called JulaPan.Exe, it may be associated with a sound card, are you familiar with this and do you know what it is for?

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • A log file will be created at C:\vundofix.txt, please post the contents of this in your next response.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Once complete, please post the Vundofix log and a new HijackThis log.
Hi silver, thanks for the help.

VundoFix didn't find any problems at all. I actually did some browsing here about the problem yesterday and ran the ComboFix.exe program that I found on the forums. Also, Juliapan is for my soundcard. Here are the logs from HJT and ComboFix.

I think the logging in as administrator was somehow an unrelated problem. I changed it in the Control Userpasswords2 feature in XP back to not having to sign in. I'm just not sure how it got changed in the first place.

Thanks for the help this far, let me know what further steps I should take (if any). It seems as though the symptoms are gone.
Hi dave_t,

Vundofix didn't find any problems because ComboFix had already taken care of that particular infection.

Make hidden/system files and folders visible:
Click Start -> My Computer
Select the Tools menu, click Folder Options and select the View tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Show hidden files and folders
UNCHECK the Hide extensions for known file types option
UNCHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Click Yes to confirm and press OK

Please upload files for scanning:
Open http://virusscan.jotti.org/
Copy/paste this file and path into the white box at the top:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\17vB5556.exe

Press Submit - this will submit the file for testing.
Please copy and paste the results in your next response.

Please use Windows Explorer to see if this file is present:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\NT1UneGO.exe

If present, please also upload this file to Jotti's for scanning.

Note: If Jotti is busy, you can use VirusTotal instead.

Once complete, please post the Jotti results and a new HijackThis log.
Note: Please don't use code boxes to post the logs, it makes them harder to read :)
Here are the results of the virus scan:

Hi dave_t,

That file you scanned looks like bad news, here is my standard warning for this type of infection:
Your computer appears to have been infected by a backdoor trojan. These programs have the ability to steal passwords and other information from your system. If you use your computer for sensitive purposes such as internet banking then I recommend you take the following steps immediately:
  • Use another, uninfected computer to change all your internet passwords, especially ones with financial implications such as banks, paypal, ebay, etc. You should also change the passwords for any other site you use.
  • Call your bank(s), credit card company or any other institution which may be affected and advise them that your login/password or credit card information may have been stolen and ask what steps to take with regard to your account.
  • Consider what other private information could possibly have been taken from your computer and take appropriate steps
This infection can almost certainly be cleaned, but as the malware could be configured to run any program a remote attacker requires, it will be impossible to be 100% sure that the machine is clean, if this is unacceptable to you then you should consider reformatting the system partition and reinstalling Windows as this is the only 100% sure answer.

If you wish to reformat then please let me know in your next response, I'll now continue with instructions for cleaning.

  • Check that combofix.exe is on your Desktop
  • Then open Notepad: press Start->Run, type notepad and click OK

  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the Save as type to All Files and save it to your Desktop.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
Note: Do not click ComboFix's window while it's running - it may cause it to stall!

Once complete, please post the ComboFix report and a new HijackThis log.
Thanks again for the help. I have checked the logs of all my accounts and everything matches up, so I'm still not too concerned. I'd rather do anything possible to avoid formating.

Hi dave_t,

You're very welcome :)

Next, please do an online scan with Kaspersky:

Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save as Text button and save the file to your desktop
Once complete, please post the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log.
Well, Kaspersky definitely found some problems, but I was unable to clean them. Here are the new logs:

Hi dave_t,

The Kaspersky results aren't too bad, the files under Eset and QooBox are quarantined from NOD32 and Combofix respectively, and mIRC (IRC chat client) is only a concern if you didn't know it was installed - please let me know if this is the case.

We do have a couple further things to fix up:

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following line:

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - (no file)

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Use Windows Explorer to find and delete the following file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\mi1.exe

If you have trouble deleting it, please let me know in your next response.

Next press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command (it's one long command) into the box and press OK:

cmd /c xcopy "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\sptd1373.sys" "%userprofile%\desktop\" /h

A file called sptd1373.sys should appear on your Desktop, please upload it to Jotti for scanning:

Open http://virusscan.jotti.org/
Browse to the copy of sptd1373.sys on your Desktop and press Submit - this will submit the file for testing.
Please copy and paste the results in your next response.

Note: If Jotti is busy, you can use VirusTotal instead.

Once complete, please post the Jotti results and a new HijackThis log.
Hi silver,

I managed to follow the first 2 new steps with no problems. Unfortunately, I couldn't copy the file to my desktop with your command line function, I tried doing it manually and it told me that the file was being used by another program.

Then I tried to browse to the file in both of the online virus scanners and on Jotti, I got the following message:

The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file

I then tried to copy it over in safe mode, which was unsucessful.
Hi dave_t, Good idea about Safe Mode :) I've found further information about that file and I'm now quite sure that it's safe so we don't need to do anything further with it. How is your machine running now?
Hi silver, Everything at least seems to be running normally now and there are definitely not any strange processes running. Would you recommend Kaspersky over NOD32 as an anti-virus program to help avoid these kinds of problems in the future? Is there anything else you would like me to take a look at? Thanks again!
Hi dave_t,

That's great to hear and I think you're machine is now clean :) there are however some important final steps:

You should now delete combofix.exe and vundofix.exe (if it's still there) from your Desktop
Please delete these folders:
C:\QooBox
C:\VundoFix Backups

Also, please clean your NOD32 quarantine area of infected files.

Re-hide hidden/system files and folders:
Click Start -> My Computer
Select the Tools menu, click Folder Options and select the View tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Do not show hidden files and folders
CHECK the Hide extensions for known file types option
CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Press OK

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up… and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Here are some tips to help you keep your computer clean:

Both NOD32 and Kaspersky are excellent antivirus products, and many would say they are the best available. Either will provide very good protection so I recommend you choose whichever one you are most comfortable with.

You should however install antispyware software with real-time capabilities - this will protect you from a wider range of malware and also that it will protect you from system changes and spyware while you are working, not just removing malware after it has been installed. There are a range of paid-for and free packages available, a free one I can recommend is Windows Defender, available here:

Please consider installing a Personal Firewall program. Even if you are behind a NAT router, I recommend you use firewall software as it will improve the security of your computer by monitoring and controlling outbound connections to the internet as well as inbound. There are various free packages available, such as Sunbelt Personal Firewall and Zone Alarm:

Spywareblaster is a free program which prevents the download and installation of Internet Explorer ActiveX based malware by immunizing your system against it. You can download Spywareblaster from here and a tutorial to help you get started is available here.

Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plug-ins orActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Please post back to let me know that you have read this, and if there are any further issues.
Thank you silver. I ran another Kaspersky scan which only found quarrantined files, I also ran SpyBot and AdAware scans that found fairly irrelevant cookie issues. There doesn't seem to be any problems with the way that the machine is running, so I thank you very much for your help again!
