Wow, what a nightmare today has been! I've been going in circles for hours and hours.

It started when I downloaded a program off Limewire. I ran the setup wizard and it said
"the version has expired please download software update"

First I noticed Limewire wouldn't close properly. Then I noticed that 'control alt delete' wasn't working and that I couldn't access regedit because –it was being used by another program?

I ran Norton and it didn't find anything, but the symtoms seemed to fit their security response for w32.alcra.B. I started following Norton's instructions, but I couldn't find a winupdates.exe in the registry. It seemed a dead end.

I ran Spware Doctor and Adware and Spybot, they found and removed some files/infections. I started deleting things and because I kept getting 'access denied' I booted XP in safe mode and deleted everything associated with Limewire.

It seemed to fix the Limewire rebooting every second and prompting me to reinstall it, but the 'control alt del' and regedit were still not working.

I found that if I pressed control alt del right when windows is starting up, I could access the task manager and regedit. My computer seemed to running normally. But if I boot and don't press it before Norton and all the other programs load, 'control alt del' and regedit don't work. – Argh!

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum :wavey:

Fix this with HijackThis!:

O4 - Global Startup: msconfig.exe

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Delete this file (if found):

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\msconfig.exe <– file
(WARNING!! DELETE THIS MSCONFIG.EXE FILE IN THIS FOLDER ONLY!!!)

Boot in normal mode.

Can you access regedit and the task manager now?

There have been a lot of nasty infections being spread by "peer to peer file sharing programs", such as Limewire.

Be afraid…. Be very, VERY, afraid…
:o

Your Java needs updated:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\jusched.exe

The latest version out is jre1.5.0_07

After updating you must remove previous versions via "Add/Remove Programs".

jre1.5.0_07 update link
