Hi and Help!
You guys had cleaned up my system several months ago, but recently I've been getting pop-ups and redirected pages (mainly a Japanese web page or something that keeps coming up after the PC has been idle for a while, and something called a "mxsecurity" page also, among other "adserver", etc. things).
Overall the Roadrunner broadband works pretty smoothly, but I'd like to clean these things up, but can't seem to do it with AdAware, spybot, TrojanHunter, CWShredder, etc.
Here's my Hijack this log - and any help would be appreciated, as you did a great job before.
Thanks in advance! (I haven't used HijackThis in a while, so hopefully I'm still doing it right and using the right version.)

Hello BobDylan, and welcome to TomCoyote forums. I'm dak, and I'll be helping you to fix your computer. I'm sorry for the delay in replying to your log: we've been quite busy here. Firstly, you are running HijackThis whilst it is still zipped; please right-click on the zipped file, and select "extract all"/"extract here" to unzip it. Then, if HijackThis doesnt automatically put itself into its own folder, please right-click on an empty area of your desktop and select new > folder. Then, drag the HijackThis icon into the folder. Scan again with HijackThis and post the new log as a reply to this thread. Also: Run HijackThis and click on the "Open the misc tools section". Next, Click on "open uninstall manager" Then Click "save list". This should create a log called "uninstall_list.txt". Please post the contents of "uninstall_list.txt", along with the new HijackThis log, as a reply to this thread.
Hi Dak and thanks for looking at my log. Sorry I didn't copy HJT right but I think I've unzipped it correctly now.
Thanks again!
Pete

Here's the new log with the "uninstall_list.txt" after the HJT log.

Hi Dak - actually it seems to be pretty good! Like I said the main problem was a Japanese language web page that would keep coming up - but I haven't seen it since getting rid of the Smiley thing. If you have any other recommendations for cleaning up things (was also wondering if I had too many processes running and if I should try to get rid of them as they keep coming back after I end them). Thanks and I'll let you know if that page (or anything else) pops up again over the next few days. Pete
Well, I can't see anything wrong with your log, so if you're no longer getting pop-ups, I'd say you were all clean :)

The following aren't malware, but it may not be nessesary for them to start automatically when your computer starts. Descide wether you want these to auto-start, goto start > run, and type in 'msconfig'. Click the 'startup' tab, and remove the check-mark next to any of the following that you dont want to keep:

IgfxTray <–Quick access to the control panel via a System Tray icon for graphics based upon the Intel chipsets (ie, i810). These chipsets are often included on motherboards. Available via Start -> Settings -> Control Panel

mmtask <–Part of MusicMatch Jukebox - digital music player / CD burner and ripper / music organizer / playlist creator, doesnt need to start on system boot.

QuickTime Task <–system tray icon for apple quicktime player.

America Online 9.0 Tray Icon <–Puts AOL icon in System Tray. You can connect to AOL via the desktop shortcut or Start -> Programs instead.

Then click 'OK'.

—–

Make sure, at least once a month, to update and scan with your anti-malware programs, and to apply the protection of spywareblaster and spybot.

—–

Also, you should update your java to make sure you are protected from the latest security holes:

Go to start > settings > control pannel, and double-click 'java'.

Click on the 'update' tag, and then 'update now'.

Extra things you can do, to prevent your computer slowing down to a crawl:

These aren't malware-related, but it is still advisable to do them regularly in order to keep your computer running smoothly.

Defragment your hard-drive: by clicking on the start menu, then going Programs –> Accessories –> System Tools –> Disk Defragmenter. Select 'analyse' and, if it suggests that you defragment your drive, click the 'defragment' button.

If a file on your computer needs to increase in size, but there is no free space near to it, then the file becomes split in two, being stored on two different locations on your hard-drive. This means that, when reading that file, the computer has to jump between two different locations on your hard-drive, slowing the computer down. 'Defragmenting' simply means moving files about so that the separate parts of a 'split' or 'fragmented' file are next to each other, forming one continuous file again.

Clean the junk off of your PC: Every now-and-then, run Cleanup!

Your PC accumulates a surprising amount of junk – temporary files which are no longer needed, registry keys left behind by a poorly uninstalled program, information about a term you entered into a search box a year ago, etc etc etc. These bits of 'junk' can get in your way and possibly slow your computer down. Cleanup! gets rid of them.

If the infection(s) which you originally had come back, please post again in this thread.

If, at any point in the future, you have reason to believe that you have become infected again, you can get rid of the infection by:

Updating Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware SE, microsoft antispyware, AVG and TrojanHunter.

Scanning with the above three programs.

Telling the above programs to fix anything that they find.

If you still have reason to believe that you are infected, or if you get infected in the future, then please do not hesitate to use this forum again :)

One last thing: you might want look into this:

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/eulalyzer.html

The tool will scan EULAs (End User Licence Agreements) and pick out 'interesting phrases'. It can help you spot if something that your about to install is going to install slyware: simply copy/paste the EULA into EULAizer, and it will point out the bits in the licence that sound like they are asking you to agree to have adverts thrown at you etc.
Okay Dak - I'll try your suggestions and let you know of any recurrent problems. Thanks again for the fix and glad it was relatively simple! Cheers! Pete
