im trying to set up my and my housemates computers so that they can all connect to the internet through a wireless router, and one of the computers is giving me a bit of problems.
basically, the other three computers connect to the router/internet fine, but this one computer can't detect the router.
According to the device manager, it has an "ieee 802.11b minipci wireless network adapter", which i assume is a wifi card?
before i go on trouble shooting, can i just check that it actually is a wifi card, and not just the slot that a wifi card would go into?
in other words, is it a case of stoopid wifi card, or stoopid dak
hi Dak,
i would bet it has a built in wireless card. the slot you refer to are called pcmcia slots and would take a removable wireless pc card that you would see hanging out of the slot. look under network adapters in device manager for a built in card.
the device manager lists, under 'network adapters', the following three things:
1394 net adapter #2
ieee 802.11b miniPCI wireless network adapter
sis 900-based PCI fast ethernet adapter
i'm assuming that the "ieee 802.11b miniPCI wireless network adapter" is a wifi card, and the settings for that piece of hardware certainly seem wify-y (eg, it has settings for antenna diversity, ssid, radio status etc) but i cant get his pc to actually use the card – when i scan for networks it reports that none are in range, although i know from my pc that both my own network and my neighbours network should be within range.
the devise manager states that the 802.11b card is enabled and 'working properly', although when i was going through the 'network setup wizard' it came up with the following message:
the network connections listed below are disconnected. Plug in your network cables or otherwise connect your network hardware and then click next:
hi Dak,
start>settings>control panel>network connections. is the card listed and enabled there? assuming the network is setup right for that computer i dont know of anyway to test a card to see if its working right other than getting it to connect to the router, which its not doing in this case.
hi dak,
WLAN Signal Strength -100 dBm (No Signal)
Bytes Received 0
Bytes Sent 0
from that it looks like the card isnt working, ive used everest before and the signal strength bytes recieved/sent changes in real time. have you tried reinstalling the drivers?
tried uninstalling/reinstalling both the driver and the utility, and i tried using the driver/utility that came on the 'drivers' cd with the laptop, and a newer one downloaded from the card manufacturers website: no joy atall.
do you think the card might be broken then?
