Try typing regedit.exe in the run command window instead of regedit. If that works you probably have or had a worm on the system. from a page on Win32.Alcan.A Modifies System Settings The worm creates the following files with the characteristics Hidden and System: %System%\cmd.com %System%\netstat.com %System%\ping.com %System%\regedit.com %System%\taskkill.com %System%\tasklist.com %System%\taskmgr.exe %System%\tracert.com Because of the order in which files are executed in Windows, the above files are executed insead of the Windows executable files with the same names. The files themselves are not malicious but prevent execution via common shortcuts unless the file name is explicitly used. For example, typing 'regedit' will execute one of the above, whereas typing 'regedit.exe' will execute the real program. The real files would be in the windows or winnt /system32 directory. The fake are in the windows or winnt directory, but your will need to have explorer show hidden and system files to see them.
"Fix" these with Hijack This!:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SW20] C:\WINDOWS\System32\sw20.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SW24] C:\WINDOWS\System32\sw24.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winupdates] C:\Program Files\winupdates\winupdates.exe /auto

Reboot in "safe mode" and delete:

C:\Program Files\winupdates <— FOLDER

Boot in normal mode and post a new Hijack This! log file.

Does this make any difference in your problem?
