Please, if you can help me, I'd really appreciate it. This is driving me nuts!
Hello and welcome to TomCoyote forum. If you still need help and are not receiving it elsewhere, please follow these instructions in the posted order.

1) Please move HJT.exe from the Desktop. I suggest: C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe. If you must run from the Desktop create a new folder by RIGHT clicking a blank spot, call it HJT and move the HJT.exe and the log that should be there into that folder.

2) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp and please do not run it until I ask you to.

3) Download, update, configure and run these two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php
The newest version of Ad-aware is 1.06 and Spybot 1.04. Even if you have these programs, use the link to get the newest version, update and configure them as in the link. Run Spybot first, reboot then run Ad-aware. Both programs back up what they remove so delete anything the programs say should be removed.

4) Ewido scan:
Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

5) Microsoft AntiSpyware may block the HJT fix, be offline when you do this, turn off MAS until you are done with HJT, then turn it back on.
Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click on Tools, Settings.
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck: Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck: Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.

6) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {014DA6C9-189F-421a-88CD-07CFE51CFF10} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [fash] C:\WINDOWS\fash.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Jawa32] C:\WINDOWS\jawa32.exe
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://bar.mywebsearch.com/menusearch.html?p=ZRxdm077XXUS
O18 - Filter: text/html - {8293D547-38DD-4325-B35A-F1817EDFA5FC} - (no file)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

7) SHOW HIDDEN FILES: Follow the instructions in the link to enable hidden files for your operating system.
You may wish to reverse this process if you have any concern about anyone getting into these hidden system files.
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\fash.exe >>> file

C:\WINDOWS\jawa32.exe >>> file

C:\Windows\Prefetch: Locate this folder and delete all of the contents (NOT THE FOLDER) This information will tell you more about Prefetch:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_…refetch-XP.html

8) Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do. Then restart the computer and post a new HJT log and the Ewido scan results in this same thread along with any feedback you have. Let me know how you are running now.

Thanks…pskelley

Thank you for getting back to me on this issue. I also have a couple of questions. I use DSL service and was looking at my packet count, for sent packets, it was over 570,000 and for received it was under 400. Is this normal and if not, what do I need to do to correct this? Also, after doing all these steps, I went back into regedit and that ALTNET stuff was still there and I couldn't delete it. Any ideas? Here are the two logfiles though:

Thanks again for your generous help.

Any ideas? Here are the two logfiles though

Understand sir that I am going to try to help you remove bad stuff (malware) from your computer. We have begun the process, now I will review the logs from the tools we used to see what kind of progress we have made. A glance at the ewido log tells me a problem has occured here: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Altnet -> Spyware.Altnet : Error during cleaning. As far as what is happening on your DSL, my suggestion would be to ask your tech support, or I may be able to suggest another forum, that information is beyond my knowledge.

Before I proceed with the logs, I am going to give you some information about Altnet.

What Panda has to say:
http://www.pandasoftware.com/virus_info/en…x?idvirus=50790
I suggest you review that information and all other information I post:
Brief Description: Altnet is an spyware program that reaches the computer when the user installs the peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing program KaZaA Media Desktop.
Now we know how it got on and rarely do they come off as easy.
More information from the folks who gave you this junk:
http://www.altnet.com/help/downloader.asp Please note in the link this information:

How do I uninstall the Download Manager?
Simply go to Add/Remove Programs and remove Altnet Download Manager

These links may provide information: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcen….topsearch.html

PCHell information: http://www.pchell.com/support/kazaa.shtml

That will give you some information to consider, I'll look over the logs to see how we have done, then we can plan how to remove Altnet and whatever other junk it brought onboard.

ewido security suite - Scan report Created on: 6:28:03 PM, 10/23/2005

Looks like ewido tried to remove altnet and failed:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Altnet -> Spyware.Altnet : Error during cleaning however it did locate and remove some other nasties. You log was really clean, ewido usually at least locates a load of cookies.

The above information, especially the PCHell link show how to manually remove all traces of altnet and the junk that came with it. You will have also looked at the removal in Add Remove programs and know by now if that worked. If you go through those suggestions and get back to here, then I suggest you run ewido in safe mode to see if it can remove it that way:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial61.html
You can also back up your registry and remove the item using regedit.

Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 5:30:40 PM, on 10/23/2005

We have an item running from your Services that looks to be a trojan:
O23 - Service: MainSafe Service (MSFIE) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mainsafe.exe (file missing)
Ignore the (file missing) that's a glitch in HJT and that file is very likely not missing.
Here is what I have found about this item:

http://www.superadblocker.com/definition/mainsafe/

Here is the google if you want to see it:
http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navc…ainSafe+Service

Do you know this item? If you want to check it before you remove it, you will probably need to enable hidden files and folders:
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html
Once you have done that use one or more of these free online scans to check the item:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mainsafe.exe
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html

Post the results of the online scans for me to view. Once you are sure it is bad, and we want you to be sure, then remove it like this:

Disable the offending Service
Click Start < Run and type services.msc.
Scroll down to MainSafe Service and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.

Delete the offending Service
Open HijackThis and click Config -> Misc Tools -> Delete an NT service.
In the Delete window, type MSFIE and press OK.
OK any prompts, close HijackThis, and restart your computer.

Right now your HJT log is clean and I want you to have some information so you can be reviewing it. Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
http://forums.net-integration.net/index.php?showtopic=3051
http://russelltexas.com/malware/allclear.htm
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=14
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topict2520.htm

You can review that information as time permits. Keep me posted on your progress, if you have questions as you proceed, post them.

Thanks…Phil
From the Virusscan.jotti site, I got this for the C:/WINDOWS/system32 file The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file. HJT couldn't delete it and MS antispyware still won't run due to the Altnet file.
