Hello,
I am new, and this is the second time I tried to post this (because I somehow didn't do it right the first time). Obviously, I am not the most computer saavy fellow in the world. Some intelligent and helpful people at a chess site that I subscribe to recommended HijackThis for my problem. At any rate, I run Adaware and SpyBot, and keep getting this "Altnet Registry Key" thing. Can someone please help me with this?

Much appreciated,

BLR

Hello BLReid and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

We will get to the Altnet registry fix, but first we need to get your log clean. :)

HijackThis needs to be unzipped into a permanent folder in order to save backups just in case something goes wrong. Go to Start > My Computer > and double click on C:. Now right click an open area and click New > folder and change the folder name to HJT. Extract HijackThis from the zipped file into this new folder.

Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove New.Net or NewDotNet.

If there is no listing for it, use the uninstaller at newdotnet.com
Use procedure 4 to remove it. It requires that an internet connection be active while doing it.

Also in Add/Remove Programs, Remove the following entry if found:

Windows XP Related

Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O2 - BHO: C:\WINDOWS\lbbho.dll - {10854AF2-11EF-418D-B7F1-A08730F6102B} - C:\WINDOWS\lbbho.dll

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Scan with HijackThis and post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Thank you for the quick response alsocom,

I did what you said and removed newdotnet names and windows XP related from the programs. Then I scanned and removed the R# item and 4 of the 5 O2 items that you listed (I didn't see the first O2 that you listed in my scan log). Here is the new log:

Log is clean. :)

Download Registry Search by Bobbi Fleckman and unzip it into its' own folder. Doubleclick RegSearch.exe to start it. Enter Altnet in the search section (top) and click "Ok". Notepad will be opened with text in it (the file will be saved in the program's folder as well). Post this text.
Sorry it took so long to get back, I was away for a couple days. Here is the regsearch log… REGEDIT4 ; Registry Search by Bobbi Flekman ; Version: 1.0.1.4 ; Results at 4/16/2005 4:16:43 PM for strings: ; 'altnet' ; Strings excluded from search: ; (None) ; Search in: ; Registry Keys Registry Values Registry Data ; HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE HKEY_USERS [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Altnet] [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Altnet\Dashboard] [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Management\ARPCache\AltnetDM] [HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1254056498-3137500025-2304659736-1012\Software\Kazaa\LocalContent] "Dir0"="012345:C:\\Program Files\\Altnet\\My Altnet Shares" [HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1254056498-3137500025-2304659736-1012\Software\Kazaa\LocalContent] "LastAltnetFolder"="C:\\Program Files\\Altnet\\My Altnet Shares" ; End Of The Log…
Please download LSPFix from here. This is a precautionary measure in case you lose your internet connection after this step.
Download KazaaBegone, unzip all files into its own folder and double click KazaaBegone.exe to remove all KaZaA entries.

If after running KazaaBegone, you find that you are no longer able to access the Internet, double click LSPFix.exe, then click Finish.

Right click the registry key that has Altnet and select permissions, then advanced and see if you (meaning whoever you are logged in as) have Permission = Full permission and Apply To = keys and subkeys.

If not subkeys, click the owner tab, highlight your name and check the box to replace owner, apply and OK. Now you are back on the Security tab! Highlight your name on the security tab and check the Allow full control box. Apply and click advanced again and you should have another entry for your name with keys and subkeys.

Do this for only these two keys:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Altnet]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Altnet\Dashboard]

Now try deleting the Altnet Folder again.
Alan,

Thannks again for your help on this. As you can tell, my time in front of my computer is rather limited. I ran Regsearch and Regedit, and made the changes you suggested. I was able to SUCCESSFULLY DELETE Altnet and P2P regkeys (someone told me that P2P was somehow related, and my system seems to be working fine without it). Now Adaware, Spybot, and McAfee Virus Scan all report a clean system!!! Thanks a million. Just for a last check, I am posting my latest HJT log for your review, and I'll take any other tips you might have to offer.

thanks again,

Brian

Your new log is clean.:)

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
4. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore'

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
