Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Backed up the registry - ran the search and deleted three (I think) aAACBoBN.exe entries. Ran HIJ and asked it to fix the two entries below. I think it did. Tried to delete the folder C:\PROGRAM FILES\vqssuwpr but no good. Wouldn't let me…

Re-booted and I'll post the new HIJ log below.

The puter seems to tale a bit of time (1 min) to boot up once I have selected my profile on the xp menu - before it's ready it does tell me Norton is turned off - but it isn't, then the message disappears anyway. Crashes slightly more than I'm used to, but not a huge problem.

Anyway, the Log:

Ah LDTate - you must be getting pretty p****d off with me!

Did everything down to delete C:\PROGRAM FILES\vqssuwpr and once again, no joy. I tried deleting the cnml.exe and dat file separately, but nothing. It won't let me at it - clever little devil isn't it? I note also from the log file below, that the thing is running again,,,,

Rebooted and the log is below. PC still runs as described in my last post.

Later.

Download Pocket Killbox version 2.0.0.175
http://www.atribune.org/downloads/KillBox.exe
If you already have Killbox first ensure it is this version !.

Then double-click on the killbox.exe program.

Start Killbox and click on Tools->Delete Temp Files.
Then select the option labeled Delete on reboot.

Do not close killbox, and open notepad, by clicking on Start, then Run, and typing notepad.exe and pressing the OK button.

When notepad is open, copy and paste the following bolded text into the notepad screen. You do this by highlighting each of the below bolded filenames and then pressing Control-C on your keyboard. Then click on the open notepad windows and press Control-V to paste the contents into the notepad.

C:\PROGRA~1\vqssuwpr\aAACBoBN.exe

Return to Killbox, go to the File menu and select Paste from Clipboard.

Still in Killbox, click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click No at the Pending Operations prompt.

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually
LDTate Thank you for your last. A thought. My machine is probably due a wipe now and as I have just got hold of a brand new h/d I am considering a complete rebuild. Clearly this would solve my problem once and for all What think you? SN

I am considering a complete rebuild. Clearly this would solve my problem once and for all

It would as long as you're not saving any Data from the old H/D. At this point we don't know what is causing this file/folder to keep coming back.

If you go with a new H/D, be sure to get these programs ASAP. Matter of fact, I'd download to the old H/D and burn them to a CD. Install them on the new H/D before connecting to the internet. Be sure to also get Ad-Aware and SpyBot.

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
Sir I am very grateful for your time and patience. I take all your advice and will heed it! This is clearly an excellent forum and I will be back. I will rebuild carefully - I will have to bring across some data (music / photos) but will get clean copies of all other .exe files - including the load you offer here. I am happy that this topic is now closed - and once again thank you for your help. Long may you reign The Storeman
