I would appreciate any help you can offer in ridding my friends computer of spyware and hijacks. I have installed and run (several times) Spybot, Adaware and Norton Antivirus 2005. Each identified and identified many spyware culprits but still numerous pop-ups occur even when not surfing the web. The HijackThis log follows. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

foxynews – You are running an old version of HijackThis.

Please download the newest version of HijackThis (version 1.98.2) and unzip it into a newly created folder (such as "C:\HJT) to ensure that backup files will be saved reliably .

Run the new version and create a new logfile, then repost into this thread.

I'll be automatically alerted when that happens.

Thanks
daveai
Installed latest HijackThis. I also did some things some friends suggested. Here is new log. Your review would be most appreciated. Thx.

Thanks for the response, and sorry for the delay today.

I'll post a fix to you later this evening.

But first, please confirm to me whether you have rebooted since postting the above logfile.

If you have rebooted, please send a fresh HJT logfile and then do not reboot until hearing back from me this evening.

You have a StopGuard infection that changes its filenames every reboot.

If you have not rebooted, please send me a reply telling me that.

Thanks
daveai
Okay, I'm back.

I'll assume you have not rebooted since sending me the above logfile. If you have rebooted, stop now and create a fresh log and post it in a reply to this message.

Please Print these instructions, you will not be able to access this page in safe mode.

DO NOT reboot until you have done all of the items below or until prompted by killbox. If a file is not there, skip on to the next one.

First,, ensure that Spybot S&D "Tea Timer" is not running for the duration of this fix. If it is, please exit the program now. Otherwise, it will interfere with the fixing process. See this link for directions..

1 – Enable 'show all files' for your system.

2 – Click on this link http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip to download TheKillbox by Option^Explicit. Extract it from the zip file then double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. In the drop down menu next to the yellow triangle scroll until you see:

dbsvr.exe

and select them. Then, click the yellow triangle and click yes that you want to end task.

Next, in the 'Paste Full Path of File to Delete' box, copy and paste this entry:

C:\WINDOWS\Web\PRINTERS\dbsvr.exe

Then, click on the Action menu and choose "Delete on Reboot". Click the button with the red circle with a
white X in it. Close killbox.

3 – As the machine boots back up from the killbox part of this fix boot into safe mode by tapping F8 at boot, then use the up/down arrows to select safe mode

4 – Run HijackThis, and press Scan, and put a check against the following entries, if they still show up. Make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis.

O2 - BHO: CATLEvents Object - {44E5B409-35A2-4E8D-BF94-344222323A53} - C:\DOCUME~1\RAYGRE~1\LOCALS~1
\Temp\rvsbd.dat

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [*dbsvr] C:\WINDOWS\Web\PRINTERS\dbsvr.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [*dbsvr] C:\WINDOWS\Web\PRINTERS\dbsvr.exe rerun

Once you have selected all the items for HJT to fix, make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis, and click fix checked.

5 – While still in safe mode, use Windows Explorer to delete the following lists of program files and folders, if they still exist.

If you do not know how to manually delete a file or folder, please ASK before attempting this fix

C:\WINDOWS\Web\PRINTERS\dbsvr.exe <– this file

Please let me know about any problems with the file/folder deletes.

6 – Empty your Temp folders as follows:
  • Open Internet Explorer. You'll get a Page not Found error, but that's normal in safe mode.
  • At the top, click Tools>Internet Options> and then, in the center click Delete Cookies
  • Click Delete Files and then in the new applet check the box for all offline content
  • Click OK
  • Close that applet and use Windows Explorer to open the C>Windows>Temp folder, and delete all files in there too, and all files in sub-folders of Temp.
Note: If you cannot delete them all at once because you have too many, then click and hold ctrl and highlight a batch of them at a time. Once highlighted, R-click over the highlight and select delete. Rinse, lather, repeat until folder is empty

Double check to see if the folder C:\DOCUMENTSandSETTINGS\RAYGRE~1\LOCALSETTINGS\Temp is empty. This username is more than 8 characters long, and begins with the letters "RAYGRE".

Empty your recyle bin

7 – Now, reboot normally, and run HijackThis to create a new logfile. Repost it here, and describe any problems you had with the steps outlined above. Your response and the new logfile will determine the next steps for this fix.

Thanks
daveai
Thanks for the response.

I would appreciate it if you will send a last HJT log for us to review. That infection has a reputation for re-spawning and I want to be sure yo are clean.

And, please allow me to suggest some prevention steps to keep your computer clean and secure going forward. You may have already taken a few of the steps, but it never hurts to take a quick look :)

1 – Use an AntiVirus Software, and be sure you update it at least once a week. There are several very good free programs available. Grinler offers an outstanding overview at Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

2 – To reduce re-infection potential for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing three free programs: SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, and IE/Spyad.

3 – Use AdAware SE and Spybot S&D; to regularly to scan your system.

4 – It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and XP are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.

5 – I strongly recommend that you consider using a Firewall. Just by using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Check out what Lawrence Abrams has to say at Understanding and Using Firewalls

An excellent overview is: So how did I get infected in the first place?. Be sure to visit the browser test link at the end of the article to really see how secure your system is!!

Thanks
