Hi Moms Hugs and welcome to TomCoyote forums. If you still need help and are not being helped else, follow these directions in the posted order.

1) Let's try the uninstaller for PurityScan here: http://sarc.com/avcenter/venc/data/adware.purityscan.html Review the information and follow the instructions here:
Removal using the PuritySCAN uninstall program
As this is written, an uninstall program is available on the PuritySCAN.com Web site. Go to http://www.purityscan.com/uninstall.html and follow the instructions.

2) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions on the download page and please do not run it until I ask you to.

3) Download, update, configure and run these two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php Please do not activate TeaTimer until we are finished with the repair.
I see spybot in your log, make sure it is 1.4, updated and configured as in the link. Run it first then reboot and Run Ad-aware 1.06. Remove what they locate as bad.

4) Download DelDomains.inf
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf
Right-click and select….. Save Target As….Save

To use: Right-click and select……. Install (no need to restart)
**Note** This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone"
Empty Recycle Bin

Note that since the Restricted Domains are deleted by this fix, SpywareBlaster protection must be re-enabled. Spybot's Immunize feature must be used again, and you will also have to re-install IE-SpyAd if installed.

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CriticalUpdate] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\wucrtupd.exe -startup
PuritySscan/Clickspring adware

If you did not set these restrictions you may check them
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
Check any 015 - Trusted Zone that is there, they should be gone.

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

6) SHOW HIDDEN FILES: Follow the instructions in the link to enable hidden files for your operating system.
You may wish to reverse this process if you have any concern about anyone getting into these hidden system files.
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\wucrtupd.exe >>> file

7) Let's check for trojans in case any are hiding, run this free online scan, scan the whole system. Let me know what it finds and the exact name and location of anything it locates but can't remove. You may be asked to install an ActiveX, please do so as this program is safe and it can not run without it.
http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/ If anything is located, use the free a2 to remove it.

8) Run CCleaner, when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure your do. Then restart the computer and post a new HJT log in this same thread along with any feedback you have.

Thanks…pskelley

Thank You for helping me! The PurityScan would not download at first - until after running DelDomains, then it did not work - apparently downloaded files were corrupted. Both SpyBot 1.4 & Ad-Aware cleared fine. I ck'd the 04 - HKLM [CriticalUpdate] for wucrtupd.exe -startup. I already had "Show Hidden Files" cosen. I deleted the appy "wucrtupd.exe" from C:\Windows\System (a 2002 file); but am worried about not having Microsoft's Critical Updates available now. I had used windowsecurity's online trojanscan before & ran it again per your instructions (found nothing). Lastly, I ran CClean & did a cold boot. Below is the final HJT log. Performance is showing 75% now. So, thank you again! :weee: ~ Moms Hugs

Hello Moms Hugs, I'll try to give you some feedback before I look at the new log.

The PurityScan would not download at first - until after running DelDomains, then it did not work - apparently downloaded files were corrupted.

It happens, I don't like to use the uninstaller from the folks who put it there, but that is the only one I can find available. If you view the Symantec link (since you are using their product) you would also have found manual instructions for removing the item.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CriticalUpdate] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\wucrtupd.exe -startup This item has nothing to do with Windows Update. Malware tries to mimic valid programs so the novice user can't identify it and remove it. See this:
http://castlecops.com/startuplist-9165.html
PurityScan/Clickspring adware - do NOT confuse with the Windows Critical Update Notification application as described here:
http://castlecops.com/s777-Wucrtupd_exe.html
And more information about this fun item: http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/PurityScan.html

Lastly, I ran CClean & did a cold boot. Below is the final HJT log. Performance is showing 75% now. So, thank you again!  ~ Moms Hugs

I have a Compaq with Windows 98SE on it and I can tell you 75% is great. I rarely use it anymore prefering one of the two Dells I work on, but when I do to update, if I stay on long I have to reboot. Windows 98 never did handle resources well. I would suggest if you intend to keep it that you have as much RAM as it is capable of handling. Then if you are working for a long period and it starts acting up, reboot and go get a cup of tea. It will work better when you get back. Keep up with the maintenance, run scan disk and defrag often. I strongly suggest you do this in safe mode, that way it will do the job quick and all of the restarts won't occur like in normal mode.

Oops, I missed this one :(

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Many thanks to you, Phil! This old machine is like my old Olds…. should run awhile longer if well maintained. Appreciate the links to other info, but after reading it, seems I've been doing what the best have advised already. Despite a firebox & using all recommended anti-virus/spy/malware SO, poor little thing still catches the dang "flu" now & then anyway. Below is my HJT log after fixing that one you caught (Netster). Again - thanks very much. ~ Moms Hugs

I am curious about these two though - both seem dubious to me:

Moms Hugs, You are so welcome and I do so understand how you feel about that computer. My old Compaq sets in the other room with it's cover on and I am thinking about putting an antique bumper sticker on it. I really don't need it with two new Dells in the house but I love that old Windows98SE Operating System with all of it's quirks. I am thinking about wiping it clean and restoring it. Then I will take it out for a drive on a Sunday once in a while…lol :P

Hopefully you will spot something in the all clean links to help you, if you did not install Netster by mistake, look at the ActiveX information. No ActiveX should be installed without your OK and if set properly you will get a prompt and be able to deny the installation. There are some many ways to get infected and no 100% guarantees from any product. All we can do is our best. Here are a couple of links to inform you:
http://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/0,…i887624,00.html
http://ralphcaddell.com/pchelp/spyware.htm
http://www.safecomputing.umn.edu/studentchecklist.html

I have several links that can be used to identity all of the programs on the computer and will post them for you if you wish. I use http://www.google.com/ more than anything else. Those two items are:
http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintas…ibrary/pstores/
http://castlecops.com/clsid-846.html
I would leave them alone unless they cause you problems.

Safe surfing to you…Phil
