I am running XP on an approx 4 year old computer. I have McAfee Internet Suite with Virus Scan and Firewall. I also have protection using Adaware, Spyware Blaster, Spybot Search & Destroy and AVG which I run regulary. My computer takes a very long time to start after a system restart, and takes a while to surf the web using Internet Explorer. Can someone please take a look at the enclosed HiJack This log to see if I have any spyware/adware. Much thanks in advance.

Not see much to fix.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

Note:
(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)


It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Next:

Download the trial version of AVG Anti-Spyware from here and install it. When the program has been installed, and you click the Finish button, AVG Anti-Spyware will open.

If the program does not automatically update itself during installation, or you are unsure whether it has done so, please do the following:

• Click the Update icon at the top and under Manual Update click the Start update button.
• The program will either update or inform you that no update was available.
• It is essential that you get the update - keep trying until successful. (Note: If you have problems getting the update, you can download an installer for the full database from here (save it on your desktop). Once you have downloaded the installer, make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed and then double-click on avgas-signatures-full-current.exe to install the database).

Please set up the program as follows:

• Click the Shield icon at the top and under Resident shield is... click active. This should now
  change to inactive.
• Click the Update icon and untick the automatic update option.
• Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
• Click on the Settings tab.
• Under How to act? - make sure that Quarantine is selected.
• Under How to scan? - All checkboxes should be ticked.
• Under Possibly unwanted software - All checkboxes should be ticked.
• Under Reports - Select Do not automatically generate reports.
• Under What to scan? - Select Scan every file.

Close all open windows.
Do not run a scan yet.

Reboot your computer into SafeMode
You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears.
Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.


IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or
programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:

• Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
• Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab
  then click on "Complete System Scan".
• ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little
  time.
• Let the program scan your computer.
• When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below:[list]
• Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine
• Important: Click on the Apply all Actions button (*** This must done before saving the report ***)
• When the program has finished, it will display the message All actions have been applied.
• Then click the Save Scan Report button.
• Click the Save Report as button.
• Save the report to your Desktop.
• Right-click the AVG Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
• Reboot in normal mode and copy the report back to this topic along with a new HijackThis log.

Sorryf or the delay--as I had an issue with my wireless router. Enclosed is the HiJack This logfile--I will have to send under separate reply a copy of the AVG scan, as I need to go back into Safe Mode. I re-downloaded and made all the applicable changes that you asked for. I also performed the ATF Cleaner. Let me know what you think and if there is anything else to do to make the computer start faster when I do a restart. Thanks again:

I just received your email and will do what you suggested. I could not save the AVG report on my desktop--did so in Safe Mode--not sure why it does not appear when I reboot. Got a big problem. I did what you asked to do in HiJack This and when I did a restart the computer will not open. All I have is a blu screen with a flashing icon on the very top left corner. What happened?

The computer finally started after about 10 minutes. Looks like my home page was changed to about.com--and I just changed back to yahoo sports. Enclosed is the log from hijack this. What weere the changes that you asked that I do previoulsy? When you asked about the performance, my computer typically takes a while to connect once I do a reboot. Also on this past restart, my linksys adapter which I jut fixed today ealier, lookied like it loaded 2 times, and I had initial difficulty connecting to the internet. The items I had you fix the last time weren't bad just resource hogs and not needed at startup. Is your McAfee a paid for version or trial version?

I don't know.


You can remove any programs / Tools I had you install. Use Add/Remove Programs to remove if listed there otherwise just delete them and empty recycle bin.

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.

Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

• Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
• Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
  (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  
  
• Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
  Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
  I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
  Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

• Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
  This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
  If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
  until there are no more critical updates.
  
  
• Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
  This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection.
  You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

• Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
  settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

• IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

• Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
  Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.
