My PC has slowed down considerably. I did a scan of it with hijackthis. I first ran a full system AVG anti virus scan, Spybot S&D scan, Adaware 2007 scan, Spyware Blaster from safe mode with system restore disabled, and all came back clean. I also have Zone Alarm installed (free version). Would someone here be kind enough to please look at my hijackthis scan log to see if I need to remve anything.

Hi Uncle Spade,

Your HijackThis log doesn't look too bad, but that doesn't mean your machine is clean so we'll have a closer look.

First, if you currently have System Restore disabled, please re-enable it. This is extremely important because even if your machine is currently infected, an infected Restore Point is better than no Restore Point at all!

To re-enable System Restore:
Right-click My Computer (from the desktop or Start Menu)
Click Properties and choose the System Restore tab
Un-Check Turn off System Restore and press Apply
After a short time the Status of your system drive should be Monitoring - when this happens press OK to close the window.

If you have any problems with this step please do not proceed any further, stop and let me know.

Next, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines (if present):
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {03F998B2-0E00-11D3-A498-00104B6EB52E} - https://components.viewpoint.com/MTSInstall…White/970p.html

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Then, please do an online scan with Kaspersky:

Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save as Text button and save the file to your desktop
Next please download F-Secure Blacklight
  • Click I ACCEPT and download the graphical user interface version to your Desktop
  • Double click the file to run it, choose I accept the agreement then press Scan
  • It will create the fsbl-xxxxxxx.log on your desktop.
  • The log will have a list of all items found.
  • Do not choose to rename any yet! I want to see the log first because legitimate items can also be present.
  • Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.
Then download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply
Once complete, please post the Kaspersky log, the Blacklight log and both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you. The logs may not fit into one post so please check that they are complete and use multiple posts if necessary.

Hi Uncle Spade,

Please post the other DSS report called extra.txt.

You should find the original extra.txt located in this folder or a subfolder under it named with the date and time of the scan:
C:\Deckard\System Scanner

If required, you can produce another one as follows:
  • Make sure DSS.exe is on your Desktop
  • Next press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:

    "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /config

  • A configuration box will appear, click the Check All button then then press Scan!
  • The extra report will be minimized so please look for it's window on the taskbar
Also, it looks like you have a special desktop picture, which is stored in a Briefcase folder on your Desktop, are you aware of this and is this intentional?
Hi, How are you getting on? If the instructions are unclear or something isn't working, please let me know before proceeding.
