Hi.

I would be very grateful is someone could take a look at my Highjack This log.
I been experiencing problems with pc performance lately.
I have scanned with AVG Free AV, AVG AntiSpyware, Spybot S&D and Windows Defender. All results were clean. If someone could confirm that I am indeed "clean", that would be great.

Thanks,

Whym.

Hello and welcome to the forum. :wavey: I would like to give you some help, if you are still in need. Give me a little while to analyze the log and I will get back to you ASAP. All of my fixes are checked by experts, so sometimes it takes a little longer. Please stay with us until the end. If you ARE dirty, we want to make certain you are clean before you leave. Thanks and I will be right back. DR
Actually your log looks pretty good.

I have a question though. Are you anywhere near Dublin, Ireland and do you recognize the isp in your 017s, [removed],[removed]?

If you do, we can leave them alone. If not, then we need to deal with them.

However, let's update your Java. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE)6 Update 3…allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement". The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u3-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Post a new HJT log, if you would. We can verify you a clean.

Then, I will follow with a Now That You Are Clean speech.

Thanks.

DR
Hi DR, and many thanks for the reply :)

I have updated Java as you advised and posted the new HJT log below.

Yes, I live near Dublin. Those 2 IP's (212.17.32.3 & 212.17.32.1) are static DNS Server Addresses for my ISP, that I set up myself.

Heres the log:

Thanks again,

Whym.
OK, things look good.

Just to be certain there is nothing nasty still hiding, I would suggest running the F-Secure Online Scanner
Note: This Scanner is for Internet Explorer Only!
Follow the Instruction here for installation.
Accept the License Agreement.
Once the ActiveX installs,Click Full System Scan
Once the download completes, the scan will begin automatically.
The scan will take some time to finish, so please be patient.
When the scan completes, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button.
Click the Show Report button and Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Thanks.

DR
Hi Dr. Sorry about the delay, I haven't had much time lately. I ran the F-Secure online scan, and it found 12 instances of spyware. However, the program then crashed before I got to the "clean-up" stage. So I ran the scan again and this time it reported 2 spyware threats. I ran the cleaner, and it dealt with both cases. I've run the scan again and this time it came back clear. I will post the report when I get home tonite. Thanks, Whym.

Everything looks good. Good work!

Once you know you are clean, it is very beneficial if you Reset and Re-enable your System Restore.

You want to Reset and Re-enable your System Restore in order to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)

1. Turn OFF System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Glad I was able to help.

DR
Hi DR, I will disable and re-enable System Restore as you advised. I am presently using AVG Free AntiVirus, AVG AntiSpyware and Spybot S&D on my PC. I update and scan with these on a regular basis. I am however reluctant to have any more processes running, eg AdAware, as it is not a very quick machine as it is. I also use the built-in Windows firewall and have a firewall on my router. Thanks again for all the help, its nice to know I'm ok  Cheers, Whym.
You sound like you know a bit about what you are doing.

You might want to investigate a different Firewall, like ZoneAlarm or Comodo. The Windows firewall is not nearly as good. It is meant to block things coming IN and not going OUT.

Otherwise, if you are satisfied, I will close this topic.
