This PC is running ME on a PII w/ 32MB RAM and a 6GB HDD. I have tweaked as much as seemed appropriate and speed has improved but I noticed a large HiJackThis Log and need to know if there is anything I should remove to speed things up. I have run both AdAware and Spybot. Got rid of over 300 data miners, loggers, etc. Anything of interest in the attached HiJackThis Log?

Finally, I noticed a Windows Update Patch KB891711 which turned itself on after the Windows Update. Research of the item shows there is a discrepancy in the PC community over whether it is necessary or even detrimental. Any advice?

Thanks,
quilok
Hello quilok, Welcome back to TomCoyote forum. I wish to be candid with you sir. If you had followed the advice of Siggyx here: http://forums.tomcoyote.org/index.php?show…04&#entry141504
I doubt much you would have had to post this log. These are old common infections that the precautions mentioned by Siggyx would have prevented. I should also say that since you know what you can turn off in MSCONFIG, you already know what is needed to run the computer, just make sure your AV and Firewall is always left on. I would say the balance of the stuff you turned off could be started via Start/All Programs in the event you need them.. If you do not need them I would consider removing them from your computer.

Download CCleaner for this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ take the time to read the instructions on the homepage so you will know how to yse it when I ask you to do so.

This item: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\KB891711\KB891711.EXE is explained the the Microsoft article below, and the CC's link will affirm the correct instructions for leaving it alone.
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/…n/MS05-002.mspx
http://castlecops.com/startuplist-7505.html

Your HJT.exe: C:\WINDOWS\DESKTOP\HIJACKTHIS.EXE needs a folder, right click the Desktop and make a new folder called HJT, move the HJT.exe and the log that should be there into that folder. This is needed to store backups for safety also.

Scan with HijackThis and check these two lines, the links under the line will tell you what they are if interested:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TimeSink Ad Client] "C:\Program Files\TimeSink\AdGateway\TSADBOT.EXE"
http://cexx.org/tsadbot.htm
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WhenUSave] C:\PROGRA~1\SAVE\Save.exe
http://castlecops.com/startuplist-4212.html

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows then click on "Fix Checked"

SHOW HIDDEN FILES: Follow the instructions in the follow link to enable hidden files for your operating system.
You may wish to reverse this process if you have any concern about anyone getting into these hidden system files.
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

RIGHT click on Start then click on Explore, locate and delete these folders:

C:\Program Files\TimeSink\ >>> folder

C:\PROGRAM Files~1\SAVE\ >>> folder

Run CCleaner, then stay in this thread and post a new log. I also suggest you review the instructions from Siggyx in the link I supplied above and do what the teacher says this time.

Thanks…pskelley
