Hello, I am new here. I hope you all can help me. I am running win98 and have never had a problem, until a few months ago. I accidently deleted my whole hard drive, lost everything. I used my restore disk, and slowly adding my programs that I had. Since than though, I am constantly getting the frozen screen. Forget trying to do anything, once the screen saver starts. The only way to fix it, is to literally use the on/off button. won't do anything. I also have windows xp, but so afraid to put it on this computer, cause it is only 600 megahertz, and heard you should have 800 to run XP Pro. I bought this computer about 4 yrs ago, but it was top of the line. Needless to say, it needs upgrading. It does serve everything I need to do on it though. I have tried and tried to find what it is. Even downloaded firefox, hoping that would work, but still does it. I ran SFC, and everything is fine there. I ran spybot & destroy, adaware, and even hijack this, but can't really find anything wrong. I am no expert though. Could someone help me, so I don't get the blue death screen anymore? Maybe I deleted something from adaware, that I wasn't suppose to. All I know is it has been over a week, trying to fix it, and I am just not sure what to do, except start all over again. Please help this frazzled lady, please? Thanks so much and if you got this far! *smile* Hope to hear from you soon. Kelly
Ok Kel heres what do. Click on start, then run, then type msconfig and hit enter. under the startup tab, theres only a couple of items you need there to be checked. You need "System Tray" .."Scanreg" and I beleive this one is called "Statereg" (that is your system restore). Now.. uncheck everything but those and click apply.. then ok. It will ask you to reboot and do so. When it gets back up to desktop you will get a window pop up that will tell you your using the startup configuration utility.. blah.. blah.. blah.. check the box at the bottom that says "Do not show this again" and then click ok.
Now go to control panel and click on system.. then advanced .. then the very last tab I believe is were your Virtual Memory (paging file) is set. Post back here and let us know what that is set to. Usually, on 98, it will be set to "Let windows decide" which most of the time fine but some times it is not.

Post back and we'll go from there

By the way, the items your unchecking in startup.. your not deleting them, or uninstalling them. They will be there they just will not startup with windows. Each icon in your system tray (were your clock is) is constantly sending and receiving information…taking up your resources..so we want to stop that leak
Hello Crow, well I think I found the problem, never had this entry in the msconfig before. scanregw.exe/autorun Could this be the problem? I tried doing a google search, looks like I have to change a lot of stuff in the registry, but I have never touched the registry before. I only have limited things in msconfig, antivirus, zonealarm pro, and the other major stuff. Just that new one since about 2 weeks ago, is that scanregw.exe/autorun. I can't open system, it freezes up, along with windows explorer, or anything related to C: drive. I can get online but that is about it, and email. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Kelly
No, you want scanreg there. The only things, as I mentioned above, that you NEED there are System Tray and scanreg. (I apologize for adding Statemgr, that on ME and is your restore.) You need also to keep in mind that your not uninstalling/deleting anything. Simply keeping it from starting up with Windows. I tell you what lets do.. Download the latest version of Hijack This here and scan but dont fix anything.. were only going to use this scan here (unless theres some spyware/malware to rid) to go over your startup menu.. save the scan to a log file then copy and paste the results back into this thread. would you mind doing that?
