one more thing. when i go to Start->Run->MSCONFIG->Startup, the SECURITY.EXE program is still active on that list. should i eliminate it from that?

Yes

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Disk Keeper]
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Services\{841438A6-84BD-451D-8453-97BDDC7F1404}\SECURITY.EXE

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Search for SECURITY.EXE and delete it if found.

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment
i changed the msconfig startup options to get rid of security.exe at startup. when i tried to find security.exe in the windows folder as i had before, it was gone (deleted i assume from a previous step). however, when i searched for the file using start -> search, i found four security.exe files (they were in spybot back-ups) and one prefetch file called "SECURITY.EXE-1C60861F.pf" - should i delete all of those? as for my computer, it is running just fine with no evidence of the virus at all. here is my latest hjt log.

thanks!

Yes, delete them all.

Open C:\Windows\Prefetch\ Delete ALL files in this folder.

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
Great job

You're more then welcome.

I'm not sure if I necessarily need the post re-opened because the virus is still gone. However, I have two remaining questions:

1) Isn't the system restore process a big deal? Is there potential to lose all my files with this process, or do I have the wrong idea about what that means?

2) Ever since this virus was removed from my computer, one thing that has NOT been working properly (I'm not sure if this is a residual problem from the virus extraction) is the ability for my computer to remain on stand-by. This had been going on when the virus was on my computer but this problem still continues now (if I put my computer on stand-by, it will soon be reactivated). Is there some process going on that could be knocking my computer off of stand-by status?
Once again, I would like to thank you all for your gracious help.

Hello InTrouble,

1) Isn't the system restore process a big deal? Is there potential to lose all my files with this process, or do I have the wrong idea about what that means?

System restore is a feature in Windows versions after and including Windows ME (which includes ME, XP, 2000). This feature of Windows allows the user to revert the system back to a previous state. Several reasons of doing this might be because they were attacked by a virus and wish to revert to a state without the virus, or they have problems such as a corrupted registry, etc.

As you can see if you revert the system back to a previous state when you had the Bad Guys, you'd be infected again. We create a New Restore Point after your computer is clean. That gets rid of all the old restore points that might still have the Bad Guys in there. That way if you need to restore back to a restore point, it would be a clean of the Bad Guys.

2) Ever since this virus was removed from my computer, one thing that has NOT been working properly (I'm not sure if this is a residual problem from the virus extraction) is the ability for my computer to remain on stand-by.

Are you on the internet when this happens? Do you have any auto updates running?

It's been over a week since your last post. Please post a New HijackThis log.
I'm not so sure if I have any auto-updates running (several programs have auto update functions, but I'm not sure which ones are actively running; I've always had auto update before but this has not been a problem until this recent virus). And yes, my computer is always connected to the internet (again, it has always been connected to the internet without problems before until now).
I should also note that spybot has been picking up the following two entries whenever I run it : CoolWWWSearch.Yexe & WildTangent. However, the problem is that whenever I use spybot to fix these problems, the program crashes. Do you see these processes listed above in the HJT log listed below?
Here is my latest HJT log. Thanks for your help.

This is what I suggest you do.

Download CWShredder from my signature below. Unzip it on the desktop.
Open CWShredder and with ALL other windows closed, click fix.
Do NOT run a scan yet.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. Save the logfile from the scan.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.
sorry it took so long to reply - i was out of the country but now i'm back. here are the requested logs below. please let me know what you think. thanks!

You need to update both Windows XP and Internet Explorere as they are both well behind in updates. They are both missing Service Pack 1 which is leaving you open to all kinds of problems.

I DO NOT suggest you go to Service Pack 2, at this time until you have read all about.

Service Pack 1 for XP

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloa…p1/default.mspx

Service Pack 1 for Internet Explorer.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downlo…p1/default.mspx
the computer is running well – no problems anymore so i think that's about it. thank you once again for all of your help. i hope my donation helps to keep this great site going!
Great job

You're more then welcome.
Glad we were able to help

Peace be with you :wavey:
