i had posted this almost a week ago and for the first time ever, i didn't have a reply with assistance :( i don't know if one of the problems with my previous hjt log was that i am not allowing the re-direct to actually happen (i always restore the old value with my spywareguard). pleeease help! thanks so much…here is the text from my previous post:

i have a browser hijack (clicksearchclick.com) - spywareguard is preventing the url from loading (i have to keep restoring the old value every minute) but the virus is obviously there. in fact, i think it must recognize that i have been trying to get to this site b/c it prevents me from clicking on tomcoyote forums – it instead takes me to a bogus clicksearchclick.com query giving me bogus antispyware software offers. so i actually have to post this log from my other computer. this one looks bad… I really hope you guys can help me.
here is the log posted from a non-infected computer:

Hello InTrouble, welcome to the TC.

I suggest you do this:

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LoadQM] loadqm.exe
O4 - Global Startup: 289904.exe

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Search for and delete this file:
289904.exe

Reboot:

You need to update both Windows XP and Internet Explorere as they are both well behind in updates. They are both missing Service Pack 1 which is leaving you open to all kinds of problems.

I DO NOT suggest you go to Service Pack 2, at this time.

Service Pack 1 for XP

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloa…p1/default.mspx

Service Pack 1 for Internet Explorer.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downlo…p1/default.mspx

Install then Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
thanks for your reply LDTate.
unfortunately the news is not good. i was able to do your first step with HJT. however, i could not find the exe file (even as a hidden file) through my search function on the start menu. by the time i had even started to search for the file, spywareguard popped up asking me if i wanted to restore the old value for my IE homepage. so my situation is sadly the same…

here is my HJT log (i imagine it still looks very similar). i don't know if i should just go ahead and give in and set the new homepage the next time spyware guard pops up? i'm just not sure if actually letting the virus take over my IE homepage would paradoxically help me remove it through HJT. please let me know what you think.

here is my HJT log (i imagine it still looks very similar). i don't know if i should just go ahead and give in and set the new homepage the next time spyware guard pops up? i'm just not sure if actually letting the virus take over my IE homepage would paradoxically help me remove it through HJT. please let me know what you think.

thanks for your help LDTate. the situation seems to have improved a little (i only say this b/c my initial homepage of cnn.com loaded a bit faster than before) after that last sequence of instructions, but alas, the job does not appear to be completely done (yet :( ).

you had asked how my computer is running. all of my other functions (besides IE) run normally. however, every 30-60 seconds (or instantly if i try to open IE), spywareguard has a pop-up which says the following:
"spywareguard browser protection alert!: an attempt to change IE settings has been detected. Your IE homepage has been changed from www.cnn.com to www.clicksearchclick.com. what would you like to do? restore old value/keep new value"
as i have stated before, i have always been restoring my old value.
furthermore, even after restoring the old value, my IE is virtually unusable b/c it is so slow. sometimes it even 'times-out' on a webpage so that it is unable to load. howevever, most of the sites do eventually (and i mean after a verrry long time) load (and if/when they do, they load in a strange font – in other words, the websites just don't look normal on the screen). finally, every few minutes there is a IE pop-up that says "your pc has a virus!" so this has (still) rendered my IE almost useless. i hope that description helps?

i hope there's still more that can be done!!!

thanks for your help so far!

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
right now i'm unable to post my latest hjt log (because i'm at work overnight and plus my internet is down at home – so i verbally walked my wife through your instructions over the phone), but i will soon enough. however, i can go ahead and state that this attempt did not work. the problem with the first step (ending the process) was that they kept popping back up as active processes even after they were ended (particularly the sgbhp.exe). however, after several attempts at ending the two, it looked like it had worked for a moment (she deleted sgmain.exe first and that seemed to help). then we ran the hjt and deleted those files. nothing appeared in the recycle bin so there was nothing to delete. after restarting the computer, the spywareguard pop-ups continued (just as before) and when we checked the processes, both sgmain.exe and sgbhp.exe were running again. so it appeared that we were right back where we started. i know it doesn't help that i don't have the most current hjt on this posting (i imagine it looks very similar to the one before) but i thought i'd go ahead and pass this along to see if you would have another suggestion. would it help to end the "process branch" rather than just simply ending the "process" (which is an option when you hit ctrl/alt/del? yikes, this looks bad…. again, thanks for your help so far.
Disable SpywareGuard: Right click the running icon of Spywareguard, it will open the program. Then go to Menu, file, exit. Then confirm the program is closed. Reboot and post a new HJT log.
things are improving, but obviously the virus is still there (homepage re-direct still in place). i was unable to inactivate spywareguard so i ended up ending sgmain.exe and sgbhp.exe and quickly removing the program by using the control panel function. after i rebooted, my homepage officially became clicksearchclick.com (i guess spywareguard had been preventing that before). however, i do have to admit that IE is running much more smoothly (i am able to access other websites without a problem, there are no more pop-ups, and there are no more strange fonts on webpages). i hope that we're approaching the light at the end of the tunnel :)

here is the hjt log. thanks again for your help.

This is what I suggest you do.

Download CWShredder from my signature below. Unzip it on the desktop.
Open CWShredder and with ALL other windows closed, click fix.

Go here and run at least one of the online scans, allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.3 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.05 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode check Perform full system scan.
Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
unfortunately the news is not good. as you can see the problem is still there (home page re-direct). in addition, there is now an intermittent pop-up frame that cannot be rid of(if you click on the x and close the frame, it just pops right back up), which says the following:
"Messenger Service
Message from STOP to ALERT on 5/22/2005
STOP! WINDOWS REQUIRES IMMEDIATE ATTENTION
Windows has found Critical System Errors
To fix these errors do the following:
1. Download Registry Repair from www.fix-comp.com
2. Install Registry Repair
3. Run Registry Repair
4. Reboot your computer
FAILURE TO ACT NOW MAY LEAD TO SYSTEM FAILURE!
OK"

The last set of instructions failed at almost every level:
1. When I ran the CWShredder, as soon as it would find something a very SCARY blue screen popped up that says that my files are being dumped to disk. After 2 seconds on that screen, I chicken out and abort by turning my computer off. This happened twice so I just skipped ahead to the next step.
2. When I ran TrendMicro and eTrust, the IE crashed. At least Panda was able to run and I have pasted the report below (hopefully that will offer some clues?).
3. Spybot did not find any problems (which I find hard to believe).
4. Adaware seems to freeze up when it gets to the end of the scan but it doesn't seem to find any files or objects (again, hard to believe).
5. Finally I ran HJT. The log is pasted below.

Is this getting worse or is it just me?

These popup windows are due to Windows Messenger Service spam.

If using Windows XP select Start -> Control Panel -> Performance and Maintenance -> Administrative Tools -> Services -> scroll down and highlight 'Messenger' -> right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties -> click Stop button -> select Disable in the Startup Type scroll bar -> finally click OK.

For illustrated step-by-step instructions see 'Stop Messenger Spam: Windows XP Users':
http://www.stopmessengerspam.com/windows_xp/windows_xp.html

or download Stop Messenger Spam (Windows, freeware):
http://www.stopmessengerspam.com/stop_mess…spam/stop_messe nger_spam.html

Windows Messenger Service windows may appear when using Windows NT, 2000, or XP online. They have nothing to do with the similarly named MSN Messenger chat program or with your web browser (so any popup stopper option has no effect).
Windows Messenger Service was designed to enable messages to be sent over a Local Area Network (LAN). Typically, a system administrator might use it to notify users that the server is about to be shut down. Because it uses the same TCP/IP communication standard as the Internet, such messages can also be sent over the Internet. Windows XP ships with Messenger Service turned on by default and this blunder has been exploited by spammers to pump out spam to every enabled system they can find. Some even advertise programs to stop it – a scam, as no software is needed to turn the service off.

I suggest you do this:

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.clicksearchclick.com/

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Disk Keeper] C:\WINDOWS\System32\Services\{841438A6-84BD-451D-8453-97BDDC7F1404}\SECURITY.EXE

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MsnMsgr] "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\MsnMsgr.Exe" /background

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

If you don't know how to start in Safe Mode, clink HERE

We also need to "Show hidden files and folders." click HERE to learn how to:

Search for and Delete this file:
SECURITY.EXE

Now run CWShredder and Ad-Aware while in Safe Mode:

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
