Hello, and thank you for your time. My homepage has been taken over by clicksearchclick.com,Task Manager has been locked out, and I'm getting pop ups left and right. Spybot and Ad-Aware found several infections, and there is usually a new one every time I scan. A few of the infections found were Cool Web Search. Whenever I try to delete the infections, CWShredder and Spybot are shut down, and Ad-Aware locks up. Please help! I've dealt with hijackers before, but nothing like this. Below is my HijackThis log. Thanks again :)

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Please download Nailfix from here:
http://www.noidea.us/easyfile/file.php?sho…050515010747824
Unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.

The above Registry file written by miekiemoes, Swandog and racooper was written specifically for this infection and is not to be used on any other infection as it could damage a person's PC

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on Nailfix.cmd. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly — this is normal.

Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. Save the log from the scan to your Desktop. IMPORTANT! Lately more people choose “Ignore” during the scan, but you’ll have to click/choose “Clean” or “Quarantine”! Otherwise the whole fix will result in a failure.

Then please run HijackThis, click Scan, and check (if there):

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Restart your computer in normal mode, make a new HijackThis log and post it here, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.
Okay, I did everything you asked. Thanks for taking the time to help me :) When I ran Ewido the first time it suddenly shut itself down at about 65%, not allowing me to make a log. The next time I ran it, I was informed that the scan was complete at about 65%. I'm not sure if this is normal or not  I will post the log from from the second scan, followed by the new HijackThis log.

Hi,

I see you still have AVG6. This version hasn't been updated since December 31th 2004! Update as soon as possible to AVG7 (or a better antivirus).

1. Download Killbox and save it to your desktop.
Doubleclick Killbox.exe located on your desktop.
Select the option "Delete on reboot".

Now copy the next bold:

C:\WINDOWS\vqomr.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\kernels32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\wupdt.exe
C:\Program Files\drvi
C:\Program Files\ISTsvc
C:\PROGRA~1\MEOWWA~1
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Services\{C5953D1F-C469-4C52-ADBE-C233244F6C32}\SECURITY.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Services\{C5953D1F-C469-4C52-ADBE-C233244F6C32}\ANTIVIRUS.EXE

Open 'file' in the killboxmenu on top and choose Paste from clipboard

Now you will see, this is pasted in the "Full Path of File to Delete"-field.
There's a little arrow (dropdown-arrow) next to that field.
If you expand it, these lines must be there together!

Then press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it.
Killbox will tell you that all listed files will be deleted on next reboot.. Click YES
When it asks if you would like to Reboot now, click YES
If you get a "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" message then just restart manually.

Run HijackThis (“Do a system scan only”). Put a checkmark near these lines:

3. Close all other windows and browsers, and hit Fix Checked.

4. Reboot, make a new HijackThis log, and post it here :)
Yeah, I intend to get NIS. Thank you again for your time. When I highlight the file paths you typed, right click and copy, and then try to use the "paste from clipboard" option on KillBox, it only adds the "C:\Program Files\drvi" and "C:\PROGRA~1\MEOWWA~1" paths to the box. Would it be be okay to add and delete these items one at a time?
Okay, here is the newest HijackThis log. My computer is now running fine, although Task Manager is still locked out. Know how I could remedy this? As always, thanks :)

Hello cj1982. :wavey:
Hans is having a problem with his Internet connection so I will be continuing the cleanup in his place.

Step 1
Disable the offending Service
  • Click Start < Run and type services.msc.
  • Scroll down to stchost.exe and right click on it.
  • Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.
Delete the offending Service
  • Open HijackThis and click Config -> Misc Tools -> Delete an NT service.
  • In the Delete window, type moto and press OK.
  • OK any prompts, close HijackThis, and restart your computer.

Step 2
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

O16 - DPF: {87D1A6EF-8CBC-458A-84B5-0333562418CD} - http://www.sitetracking.info/cttdl.cab
O16 - DPF: {ED2E4BB5-60EA-4624-9DE2-998E441C699B} (OpenSiteInstall.opensite_install) - http://www.zuvio.com/OpenSiteInstall.CAB

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 3
Please set your computer to show all files.
  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
  • Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
You will need to reverse this process when all steps are done.

Step 4
Please delete the following files/folders:

C:\WINDOWS\stchost.exe

If you have any problem deleting these items, reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter') and try again.

Step 5
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.
Thanks as always. Okay, I did everything you told me but wasn't able to find stchost.exe in the WINDOWS folder. The computer is working very well now. The only problem I am having is that Task Manager is still locked out. Here is the newest HijackThis log:

Go here and try the repair for Task Manager (113 left column).

If you have not installed NIS on your computer, I would really recommend following Hans advice and update AVG to the newer version. The older AVG will not protect your computer to any new bad items.

Let me know if Task manager is working after the fix. Post a fresh Hijackthis log when done.
Okay, the fix for Task Manager worked. I am definetly going to get NIS. Here is the new HijackThis log. Thanks agan :)

I see that stchost.exe is back. :(
In the interim, while waiting for the purchase of NIS, please update AVG or your computer will continue to be reinfected.

Open HijackThis, run a scan, and check the following:

O16 - DPF: {87D1A6EF-8CBC-458A-84B5-0333562418CD} - http://www.sitetracking.info/cttdl.cab

With all other programs and browsers closed, click Fix Checked.

Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Here is the new log. I think we've just about nailed it.

Your new log appears clean. :)

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK, and then click Yes.
4. Restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore', click 'OK'.

I recommend going to the following link and update to SP2. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer.
Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer Updates

Here is a great link that explains the procedure for updating to SP2 with less complications (scroll down to the second post).

I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - 'Safer' alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
