This forum enabled Peper Trojan 2 months ago. But in following weeks I seem to have accumulated some less virulent but nevertheless annoying problems.

Specific symptoms:
e-mail program locks up on launch at least 50% of the time (on first attempt). Usually launches on 2nd try.

More frequent pop-ups on-line, even when visiting "regular" websites.

Occasional program slow-downs, or slow window switching between programs. Rebooting fixes this.

More frequent error message dialogue boxes, usually benign. Often at shut down I get program not responding message regarding either ccApp or explorer.exe [Should be removed?]

Today I
Updated and ran Spybot 1.3
Updated and ran Ad-Aware 1.05
Ran HiJackThis
Ran Peperfix-nothing found.

Here is my HijackThis logfile:

2. Close all other windows and browsers, and hit Fix Checked.

3. Reboot into safe mode by tapping F8 frequently during bootup.
Make sure your settings allow you to view "Hidden files". Open up any explorer windows and click on "Tools" => "Folder Options" => "View" and be sure to check off "Show Hidden Files and Folders".

4. Delete, in safe mode:
Folder
C:\Program Files\BroadJump

Files
C:\WINDOWS\System32\JceK6AX.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\dp-him.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\asfpsrv.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\CAMOCX89.exe

Now run CleanUp! twice.

5. Reboot into normal mode, make a new HijackThis log, and post it here :)
Hi Hans:

Thank you again for your expertise, your help, and your patience. I did not attempt the fix until I had enough time blocked out to finish it without interuption.

Some small surprises in the process:
1. Each time PeperFix reported no peper files found. Automatic reboot did not occur, so I rebooted anyway, ran PeperFix.exe again with same result.
2. I could not find 3 of the 4 files to delete from c:\windows\system32 in step 4:
JceK6AX.exe, dp-hlm.exe, or asfpsrv.exe. Maybe deletion of the 25 items by HijackThis removed them.
3. Cleanup! never seems to finish as I expect. After the scan, I am prompted to reboot or log off, but on restart, Cleanup does not automatically start again, so I have to find and run it and then I get the same result?!

Looks good! :)

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers real-time protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
I also suggest that you delete your Temp folders regularly. Use CleanUp! to do this automatically for you!
