Problem first noted last night on running of daily Adaware 1.06 scan. Adaware detencted a Trojan and I had Adaware fix. I then ran both Spybot 1.3 and McAfee Anti-virus and came up clean.

Tonight I started seeing broser hijacking going on, with new browser windows opening periodically featuring ads for Winfixer and WinantivirusPro. I then spent the rest of the evening running Adaware 1.03, Spybot 1.4 (I downloaded the new version), and Microsoft Antispyware. All showed no problems, but the hijacking continued. I ran Symatec's Fixvundo which didn't detect anything and I also ran CWShredder which came up clean.

Hi and welcome to TomCoyote forum, and yep it's the vundo trojan. This is the fix that works right now when you follow the directions.

Please turn off TeaTimer, it may well interfere with the fix: http://russelltexas....re/teatimer.htm

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
• This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
• After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
• Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
• You will first be presented with a warning.
  It should look like this

  Press enter to continue....
  
  

• At this point press enter one time.
  
• Next you will see:
  

  Please Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
  and then press enter:

• Press Enter to continue with the fix.
  
• Next you will see:
  

  Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum
  staff then press enter:

  This will be the vundo filename spelt backwards. for example if the vundo dll was vundo.dll you would have the user enter odnuv.*
• Press Enter to continue with the fix.
• The fix will run then HijackThis will open, if it does not open automatically please open it manually.

• Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.

Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

• Empty Recycle Bins
• Delete Cookies
• Delete Prefetch files
• Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

By cruising through the boards I was able to figure out the format of the Vundo virus fix and did the fix myself a few days ago. The Winfixer ads stopped (thank God). I was unsure what to do about the no name BHO entry in HJT, so I left it alone. Here is the Vundo.txt file followed by a current active scan log and HJT run. Hello Sir, and you figured out what Atribune was doing faster than I did What I would like to do is properly position HJT first. To make sure nothing is stored in the folder but HJT related would you create a new folder on the C:\ and call it HJT. Move the HJT.exe and any logs to the new folder. HJT will also store backups for safety in that new folder. This is a very valuable tool and it does lots more than create a logfile. This is grayware. You have others that are scanners that you used and you may use HJT to remove anything you are done with or no longer use in the DPF's. You will be prompted to download them again if you ever return to the site.
Microsoft AntiSpyware and TeaTimer.exe
These two programs often block HJT and you will probably need to disable them to remove anything. I want to say I see no malware and all of these changes are optional.
