I have been having a ton of pop-up issues recently. It started about 2 weeks ago when my Spy Sweeper subscription ran out (It had been unable to update for about a month). I installed a full version of AVG and it slowed down the infection, but now it is back with a vengeance. I get a pop-up from IE about every 5 minutes, and whenever I use a search bar or start typing Firefox explodes with anywhere between 3 and 45 popups in separate windows. AVG said that it was having problems with a trojan horse small.awf, but was unable to fix the problem because it was being used by another program.

Below is a copy of my HijackThis.

Thanks in advance

EDIT - Its about 5 hours later and I got back on the computer. I received a pop-up while looking at another post on these forums and AVG gave me a new threat that I have not seen before. It normally would give me the option to either 'Heal' or 'move to Vault' but this time it just says either OK or help

File Name : 85.12.43.127/css/index.php?sid=b283ba88bf86b685b786bbc8bdd0b4d8b78aba82b180b78682
Threat Name : Exploit MDAC ActiveX Code Execution (Type 290}
Process Name : C\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE
Process ID: 3564
Hi VenoMinon

I am sorry to say that Your computer has multiple infections, including a rootkit. A rootkit is a set of software tools intended for concealing running processes, files or system data from the operating system.

Here is some information on it.

http://www.greatis.com/appdata/d/SysDir/t/taskdir.exe.htm
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/t….exe-14675.html

You are strongly advised to do the following:

  • Back up all your important data except programs. The programs can be reinstalled back from the original disc or from the Net.
  • If thi Computer has been used for online banking Call all your banks, financial institutions, credit card companies and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and put a watch on your accounts. If you don't mind the hassle, change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change all your passwords (ISP login password, your email address(es) passwords, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, Amazon, online groups and forums and any other online activities you carry out which require a username and password).

DO NOT change your passwords from this computer as the attacker will be able to get all the new passwords and transaction records.

Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be to do a reformat and reinstallation of the operating system (OS). However,
if you do not have the resources to reinstall your OS and would like me to attempt to clean your machine, I will be happy to do so.

To help you understand more, please take some time to read the following articles:

What are rootkits from Wikipedia
Why are rootkits dangerous
When should do a reformat and reinstallation of my OS

Let me know what you would like to do.

You also meantioned that your SpySweeper subscription ran out a few weeks ago, and you have just installed AVG, what Antivirus was you using
before you installed AVG alongside with Spy sweeper.
I just purchased this computer from a friend about 4 months ago, and he gave me some of the programs that I use but I do not have the install disks for them anymore. The computer is used mostly for gaming and iTunes but I do not have any of the iTunes items backed up either, so if I could fix the problem without a complete wipe, that would be much better I've mentioned to my GF that she should change her passwords from her computer at work. I do not have anything on here that I am worried about being comprimised. Before I installed AVG my friend says he had the demo version of AVG installed for a while. and before that he said the was either Norton or McAfee (whatever came with the compy) thanks for the help.
Ok, let's get cleaning then

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
    (Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Download and run Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:
A word of warning: Please do not run ComboFix on your own. it tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Link 3

IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Very Important!, before running Combofix Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
    They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you.

I'm having trouble turning of my AVG real time scanner. I disabled the device and Combofix told me it was still active. I then ended all the AVG processes in my Task Manager and still Combofix says it is active. Do you know how I disable the real time scanner?
Try This

  • Open AVG8 Control Center, by right clicking on AVG8 icon on task bar.
  • Click on Tools.
  • Select Advanced.
  • In the left hand pane, scroll down to "Resident Shield".
  • In the main pane, deselect the option to "Enable Resident Shield".
Note: Once Combofix has run re-enable AVG, please select "Enable Resident Shield" again.
ok I got Combofix to work, but when it finished it keeps giving me an error message that sayss Windows - Drive Not Ready exception processing message c00000a2 Parameteres 75b6bf7c 4 75b6bf7c 75b6bf7c It gives me 3 options, Cancel, Try again, or Continue. I hit Continue once and it came back to this screen
OK I hit continue at the top screen for the second time and then Combofix finished its logging. this was all after Combofix did its things and rebooted the computer.

First up is the SDFix log

Good job, on getting that sorted

You are running a P2P filesharing programme.

LimeWire 4.16.6
BitTorrent

  • Many of these programmes come with unwanted components bundled with them.
  • If you wish to find out whether the one you're using does click here.
Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P programme, it is only the programme that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.
I'd like you to read the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic….c8d24e3e96420cc
Remember, no matter how clean the program you're using for peer-to-peer filesharing may be, it offers no guarantees regarding the cleanliness of files you may choose to download.
All files available via p2p filesharing carry a high risk, particularly those that offer you illegitimate methods of using legitimate software programs without paying for them.
Any program or file that offers you the ability to access non-freeware programs at no cost, e.g., pirated software and/or cracks/key generators for gaining access to legitimate software, is 100% guaranteed to contain malware.

An often unanticipated and unintended consequence of using p2p programs is that you may be leaving your computer open to access by others without your knowledge or consent.

NOTE: Under no circumstances should you use p2p filesharing while I am assisting you in ridding your computer of malware.
My recommendation is you uninstall it.

COMBOFIX-Script
A word of warning: Please do not run ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    File::
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\core.cache.dsk
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\lnwin.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\adirss.exe
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\mtlstrmm.sys

    Folder::
    c:\temp\REX81

    DirLook::
    c:\windows\system32\xn
    c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\{3276BE95_AF08_429F_A64F_CA64CB79BCF6}
  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

I'd like you to check (a file/some files) for Viruses.
  • Go to VirusTotal or Jotti's

c:\windows\Vmuloqeviweced.dll
c:\windows\system32\gqrpspxc.iwp

  • Copy/Paste the first file on the list into the white Upload a file box.
  • Click Send/Submit, and the file will upload to VirusTotal/Jotti, where it will be scanned by several anti-virus programmes.
  • After a while, a window will open, with details of what the scans found.
  • Note details of any viruses found.
  • Repeat for all files on the list, and post me the details please.

Please post back

Combofix Log
Scan results on 2 Files
When I went to send the second file, c:\windows\system32\gqrpspxc.iwp, to Virustotal, the pop-up window told me that the specified file did not exist. I tried both manually searching and using the Windows Search tool for it and also tried on Jutti and neither were able to help me

I also am currently using the windows add/remove software program to uninstall Limewire and BitTorrent. Limewire was being used for iTunes and had mostly music and some Audiobook files. BitTorrent was mostly used by the last owner of the computer for some programs including a beta tester for Warhammer Online.
As SpySweeper's subscription ran out a few weeks ago I would go to add/remove programs and uninstall it, as you can
no longer update, it is of no use to you, we will replace it with MBAM .

I also see Viewpoint installed..

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article.

I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall them
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager

If you have uninstalled Limewire and BitTorrent let me know and we can clear what folder and files it leaves behind.

COMBOFIX-Script
A word of warning: Please do not run ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    File::
    c:\windows\Vmuloqeviweced.dll

    Driver::
    gel90xne
    GQRPSPXC

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet001\Services\GQRPSPXC]

  • Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and save it to a convenient location.
  • Double click on mbam-setup.exe to install it.
  • Before clicking the Finish button, make sure that these 2 boxes are checked (ticked):
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
      Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware will now check for updates. If your firewall prompts, please allow it. If you can't update it, select the Update tab. Under Update Mirror, select one of the websites and click on Check for Updates.
  • Select the Scanner tab. Click on Perform full scan, then click on Scan.
  • Leave the default options as it is and click on Start Scan.
  • When done, you will be prompted. Click OK, then click on Show Results.
  • Checked (ticked) all items and click on Remove Selected.
  • After it has removed the items, Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply. You can also find the log in the Logs tab. The bottom most log is the latest.

Things seem to be running correctly now. I haven't had any problems with pop ups or with bogging down as I did before. I was able to remove Limewire and BitTorrent so if there is anything else to do in regards to those programs please let me know
I think last time you ran combofix you just double clicked the combofix icon, make sure you drag and drop the CFscript doc this time.

    File::
    c:\windows\Vmuloqeviweced.dll

    Folder::
    c:\program files\LimeWire
    c:\program files\Viewpoint
    c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\Viewpoint

    Driver::
    gel90xne
    GQRPSPXC

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet001\Services\GQRPSPXC]

Please post back the new Combofix Log
