Not Much Works On My Pc Anymore

I'm about ready to pull this computer from the wall and hurl it out the window.

About a week ago my computer crashed for the second time and Windows couldn't startup. There was an error about a system file being corrupt or missing (forgotten exact phase sorry). I have managed to get it back up,..however almost everything I try to do, to get programs updated and back to the pre-crash versions fails to go through because of errors.

* I get an error when I try to update windows back to SP4 (cannot connect to the server)
* Windows installer is finally up but acting very weird.
* I cannot upgrade IE back to IE6
* I am getting a shdoclc.dll error
* I cannot use Norton's System Works or NAV because it now says I have to activate it to use it(despite it being activated previously) and the activation screen freezes.
* my emails come in without any content so validating my registration here was tricky and by chance after forwarding the validation email to my daughter's addy(to test out her addy for the purpose of 're-validation to a working email addy) the content appeared after I forwarded.
* I cannot uninstall my email software
* I cannot uninstall and re-install Norton's software

Anyway,..you get the point I'm sure,..there is much more wrong with this computer and I'm totally exhausted trying to fix it. I keep hitting brick walls because there are so many problems,..I just don't know where to start now.

After reading through my log,…GASP! I can see why my computer is having fits. There are things in the log that look very suspicious to me,..URLs etc that I have never even seen before. It's clear my computer needs a major overhaull. You can see for yourself,..she is pretty sick.

If you could help me sort this mess out,..I would be very very grateful.

Thanks in advance,

Hello poorsickpc , welcome to the TC.

You can use windows sfc (system file checker) You'd need your Windows CD to make this work.
Click Start> Run> type sfc /scannow Note the space.
(Note that there is a space between sfc and /scannow)

Let me know how it goes.
I cannot thank you enough!!! that worked incredibly well. After doing what you advised,..I was able to use Windows Update again at last and Windows Installer is behaving nicely now.

I was able to apply all 39 Critical Windows Updates, including SP4 and IE6 whooot!!! This brings it back to where I had it a few weeks ago all but a few updates that have been made available since my last regular update.

My computer is now back to it's 'normal' state (running ok but a little labouring), though I am unable to get Norton's Firewall and Norton's System Works(which includes NAV) to run at this point which I would love to sort out quickly for obvious reasons. I tried Uninstalling Norton's Firewall but it kept failing throughout the process and I kept hitting the 'Retry' button until the Uninstall process finished. After all that, it said it uninstalled successfully.

When I tried to re-install Firewall,..there was a very lengthy delay to get the Symantic Installer to come up. Through the install process it again kept failing and again I just hit retry as it kept going through the process. At the end of the installation there was an error and it said the installtion has failed. :rant2: I noticed that it got stuck at the point where it was trying to process the 'Registration' if that means anything.

I have included my updated Hijackthis. Are there other things I can do to clean this computer up to make it function better?

Many thanks,..I really appreciate your help.

poorsickpc

This is what I suggest you do.

Download CWShredder from my signature below. Unzip it on the desktop.
Open CWShredder and with ALL other windows closed, click fix.

Go here and run at least one of the online scans, allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.3 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.05 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode check Perform full system scan.
Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Printed out your suggestions and followed through in order,.ticking off and making notes as I went along. Here is what happened.

Downloaded, installed & ran CWShredder - No problems found

Ran Housecall - No problems found
Ran eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner - No problems found
Ran Panda ActiveScan - 1 problem found (Adware: HOTBAR)

Updated and ran Spybot V 1.3 - No problems found
Downloaded, installed and ran Ad-Aware SE Build 1.05 - 51 Critical Objects found (3 being Alexa)

After restart:
Computer started up much faster than it has done for some time.

Starting IE6 to post here worked fine,..but need more time using it to really determine if all the weirdness with that has gone away.

Tried again to install Norton's Firewall and the following happened;
On inserting NFW CD,..the Symantec Installer screen took 3 minutes to appear instead of being instant.
Installation Failed during the process, at the Updating Component Registration point again.
After hitting retry the installation continued but towards the end and error message came up saying "Unable to uninstall Norton Firewall components" despite me having selected Install not Uninstall. I'm assuming the previous installation of Firewall(prior to the last system crash and subsequent problems) was not uninstalled completely perhaps?????

I'm very nervous not having a Firewall or AV,..it's been that way for over a week now :o

Thanks again for your help,..your instructions are fantastic and it's so great to be seeing the 'light at the end of the tunnel' with these problems.

Can you also suggest how I could prevent so many processes starting at startup?

Cheers,

Poorsickpc

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Restart your computer in Safe Mode

Press the F8 key, when you see the Starting Windows bar at the bottom of the screen.

Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.

To configure Windows to show all files

Do one of the following:
In Windows 98/Me/2000, on the Windows desktop, double-click the My Computer icon.

In Windows Me/2000/XP, on the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
On the View tab, uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
Do one of the following:

In Windows Me/2000/XP, uncheck Hide protected operating system files. Then, under the "Hidden files" folder, click Show hidden files and folders.
If you see a warning message, click Yes.
Click Apply.
Click OK.

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY listed profile USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Completed all suggestions and emptied Recycle Bin, removing 511 objects.

Computer seems to be working ok for the most part, though it didn't reboot on it's own and required a button push . I was shocked to hear the Windows StartUp sound again when it finally restarted(don't remember the last time I heard that).

No more weird events from IE6 so far.

Windows Installer not working again :rant2: freezes.

Still unable to re-install Norton's Firewall - problem was the same.

I have to say,..this method of eradicating problems is just amazing. I am actually enjoying fixing my computer. The best thing is I'm learning a great deal along the way which will help me keep these type of problems off my computer in the future,..thanks so much. This forum is sheer magic!

Cheers,

Posting again after having worked on my computer a little more.

I finally have Norton's Firewall and Norton's SystemWorks installed again and they're running well. Whoooot! I had to use SymNRT.exe to uninstall previous Norton files that were still floating about on my system after unsuccessful uninstalls using Add & Remove. The re-install of these programs went without any problems after that.

I noticed that five 023s with 'missing files',..that you suggested I put a check against,..were still present in my last log so I did these again but still they remain.
I've highlighted these in my new log for your quick review.

My computer is working ok,..but slowwwww now since re-installing the Firewall. I'm guessing I'll need to adjust my Firewall settings a little to improve speed yes??? Will look into this at the Symantec site at a later date.

Glad you got Nortons running again.
You only want 1 Firewall and 1 Anti-Virus program running at one time.
You need to make sure Grisoft and ZoneAlarm are disabled or removed.

HijackThis has problems with reading the 023's and will show file missing on items when they are actually there. That's the reason I listed those to fix in case that was stopping your nortons from installing.

Download this program and run a cleanup. Read about the program at the web site. The download is at the lower left side.
http://www.ccleaner.com/

Let me know how it goes.
Ok,…phew,..thanks it's looking really good now.

I once used Zone Alarms for a while then AVG,..but switched to Norton's because I got a great bundled 'deal' (aaaar what we do to save a few dollars). Both Zone Alarm and AVG have been Uninstalled from my system long ago,…but obviously not fully as it seems I still have a few rogue files floating about. Would like to get rid of these if possible.

I have a couple more questions if that's ok.

Immediately after I 'Analyzed' my computer in Carp Cleaner (very neat piece of software!!!) my system went and had a System Dump on WIN32k.sys and then restarted itself so I had to go back and analyze again. Why does it do these dumps??? It has done this fairly frequently in the past months. At startup,..my computer has a screen that gives me the option to start one of two Windows 2000 Pro operating systems located at WINNT/ & WIN/ ,..would this have anything to do with it perhaps??

While I was in CCleaner I also took the opportunity to remove some programs from the list of those that start every time the computer starts up and my computer is starting up much faster.

After I cleaned up all the CARP  from my system (what an eye opener that was),…I went to empty the recycle bin and got a Norton's protected files message instead that I don't understand. The exact wording was…Quote:
There are 798 protected files total on Drive C:
You have 526 protected files on drive C:
Purge Yours…………Purge All…………….Cancel

What should I do?

Anyway,..perhaps these questions belong in the General Questions forum. I have a few more annoying problems I would love to sort out which are more suited to that forum,..so if the above Qs are best posted there,.I'll do that.

Many thanks.

Looks like Windows is installed in two folders. Not sure if this would cause this error.

I would purge all.

You can give that a try. If no help there try here:

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
Thanks again LDTate,.. during this process I've gathered together all these great programs and great advice and placed them in a new "computer fixes' folder on my desktop. Thanks to you,..and this fantastic site, I'm now armed an ready to fight future pesky adware/malware/browser hijack problems with better knowledge and tools to fix. Can't thank you enough!!!!!! Overall my computer is working pretty much like it was when I first got it. Anything not net related is fast and no errors. IE6 runs painfully slowly still despite a DSL connection. Takes ages to load pages. I plan to seek information regarding slow IE6 issues at an IE specific site/forum. I was using Firefox prior to my last crash purely because of the slow page loading issue. Firefox loaded pages for me in an instant. Firefox is missing from my system now during my cleanup with you,..haven't a clue how that happened. Was it earmarked for removal ???? Is it ok to re-install it now? I tried to set the new restore point, following your instructions but I don't have a Restore Tab in My Computer/Properties :[ . Can you suggest another way. Perhaps Norton's Go Back has disabled that function???(Of course I am guessing here). Thanks too for the info on how to maintain my system so that it remains clean. I might once again be able to actually 'enjoy' my computer and surf for fun again instead of just fighting to keep it alive. Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou!!!!

Is it ok to re-install it now?
