I am having problems with spyware. Recently McAfee found and removed the trojans downloader-vg (+ 2 variants). My system kept getting re-infected until I downloaded SpyBot and ran it. I have ran spybot search and Destroy, NoAdaware, Ad-Aware SE, Microsoft Antispyware(beta). All have found various problems, but my computer keeps getting re-infected with pop-ups and browser hijackers. I believe there is one or more hidden programs that are running everytime I boot up. Plus, because I am connected to the internet via a cable modem, the programs run without my seeing them. I can send and receive e-mail fine but Internet Explorer is completely hijacked. My homepage is supposed to be roadrunner… this will partially load and then lock up. I am unable to type addresses in the address bar or at times it just takes me to random sites with all the popups. Below is the hijack this from v1.99.1 hope someone can be of assistance. I have been stuggling with this for over a week. I think the origination of the problem was a music download site (fav.wav).

RTW [removed]
hi RTW, i would print this out or copy to a text file so you can get to it. before starting fix go ahead and pull plug on your cable modem until done. could you move hjt out of the temp: Extract to a folder such as c:\Antispyware\Hijackthis\ or c:\Program Files\Hijackthis\ but not on your Desktop or a temporary folder. This will allow us to use backups to restore entries if necessary and prevent it from being deleted when the temporary folders are cleaned out or creating its backup(s) or backup folder on the Desktop. ————————- scan with HJT, put a checkmark beside the items below, close all windows and click fix checked: O2 - BHO: SDWin32 Class - {415F284F-0EC8-4475-B128-93DA236F7D1C} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\wdnsy.dll O2 - BHO: SDWin32 Class - {B459B72D-4A2E-432C-A5E0-D3107112172D} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\vfwuf.dll (file missing) O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file) O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [kimlme] c:\windows\system32\kimlme.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RSync] C:\WINDOWS\system32\netsync.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Desktop Search] C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\desktop.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ffis] C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\ffisearch.exe ———————— ok now you see all the 04 items above? find each of the exes and delete them. example: delete just>>kimlme.exe in this directory>>c:\windows\system32 the last one may be a single folder called isrvs with two files inside (desktop.exe and ffisearch.exe) if so delete the entire folder if you cant delete them bring up task manger by clicking these keys in sequence: crtl-alt-delete, if you see any of the 04 exe files running. select end task, then delete them ———————– Click Start>Run then type %temp% Hit OK. Delete all the files you can. Empty your Temp folders. Go to Start > Run and type:cleanmgr. Windows will scan. When done check these 3 and press *ok* to remove: Temporary Files Temporary Internet Files Recycle Bin ———————– reboot normally, rescan with hjt and post new log………….
OK….the system is now faster on bootup and general response. I have Hijackthis is c:\Frogram Files\Hijackthis. fixed the 3 02 - BHO items, the 4 04 -hklm items. I Could not find the kimlme.exe file anywhere. Deleted netsync.exe and the desktop.exe and ffisearch.exe are in the C:\WINDOWS\isrvs folder with 4 other files. The folder "isrvs and associated files" are hidden. I was unable to delete them as they were being "used". I checked task manager and could not find any of the 04 (desktop.exe and ffisearch.exe) running. Ran %temp%, deleted about 300 files (6 remaining) rand cleanmgr.

I have a small window in the lower right corner of the screen "Search the Web" which is probably Isearch, usually Microsoft Anti-spyware sees this and removes it. Not this time. Below is my Hijackthis: THANK YOU FOR THE HELP <_< hope that things keep improving.

:D Shelf Life,
I have fixed all the requested items. Had to run Hijackthis in safe mode to eliminate 04 - HKLM\….\RUN: [Desktop Search] and [ffis] items. When trying to fix them in regular mode they just kept returning, even after deleting the 'isrvs' folder in safe mode. The log is below, it appears that all is running ok. I was able to go into the web using IE and the 'search the web' window in the lower right has not re-appeared. Unless you see something else to do….A hundred humble thanks to you and this group for the help. Hours of frustration, moments of Joy!

for reference:

Please follow a few tips to remain malware free:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
occasionaly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

Also download, install and keep updated- Antivirus Software (and use only one):
Free for home users:
avast! 4 Home Edition Download
AVG free version 7.0 AVG free version v6.0 updates ended 12/31/04
AntiVir Personal Edition

Adjust your browser settings: Change your(active x) settings in IE. With IE open go to tools, internet options, security tab. Click on the internet globe, then custom level. Set the first option "download signed active x controls" to prompt, the next two to disable. Read more:
Internet Explorer Privacy & Security Settings
Working with Internet Explorer 6 Security
Many exploits are directed at Internet Explorer, you dont have to use it. Try a different browser:
Like Firefox,
And Pegasus Mail for a safer e-mail client.

Install a firewall. A firewall will control what comes in from the internet and what leaves your computer to the internet. A firewall will also alert you when a application trys to connect to the internet from your computer, this is a good way to catch crapware or trojans, trying to connect out bound from your computer- whats that and why does it need a internet connection? You can deny it access it until more investigation is done. Zone Alarm is a free and easy to use firewall, that will provide in and outbound protection. Microsoft XP firewall only provides inbound protection. SP2 adds in and out bound protection which is better than nothing, but is not as robust as third party firewalls, Be sure to run only >one< firewall. If you use another, be sure to disable XP's built in firewall.A inexpensive NAT hardware router with SPI (firewall)would be even better, along with a software firewall.
Zone Alarm
Kerio Personal Firewall
Outpost Firewall

Download, install and update before using:(if these are constantly finding malware, then you need to make some changes)
Ad-Aware SE Personal edition
Spybot Search and destroy
Becarful with spyware "removers and scanners"– there are many "rogue/suspect" programs that "claim to remove" spyware.

Other programs to consider:
SpywareBlaster
IE-SPYAD
AntiTrojan software to fill in the gap:
a2 free
Ewido Security Suite
Trojan Hunter (30 day trial version)

Watch what you download, and where you download it from. Many programs come bundled with "extra" crapware you may not want. Make sure you know what it is you will be downloading and installing. Visit the makers website, learn more about the program, Does the program you want come bundled with other "3rd party" programs? What do the 3rd party programs do? Will they deliver ads? Track your surfing habits?.You may be installing more than you think, Read the EULA agreement, you know that paragraph of stuff you "agree to" before the software installs? Stay away from warez and crack sites. Becarful what you download from file sharing networks. If you are not sure, scan it with your Antivirus app. A small file (in KB) is probably not what you think it is. Some p2p clients also install 3rd party stuff you probably dont want.If you search hard enough you can usually find a "clean" alternative to any software.
