I recently got infected with a bunch of spyware through my own carelessness. I've managed to remove everything that shows up on AdAware, Microsoft AntiSpyware and Spybot. I'm still getting annoying popups though (even when I'm not browsing, IE will automatically open up with a popup and continue to do so every few minutes), so whatever's still there is not being detected by those programs.

Here's my hijack this log:

G'day Mate, and welcome to TomCoyote forum. Luke, you have several problems and I am going to try to get them all at once. It is very important that you follow all directions carefully, wish us luck.

1) Download the trial version of Spy Sweeper from Here

Install it using the Standard Install option. (You will be asked for your e-mail address, it is safe to give it. If you receive alerts from your firewall, allow all activities for Spy Sweeper)

You will be prompted to check for updated definitions, please do so.
(This may take several minutes)

Click on Options > Sweep Options and check Sweep all Folders on Selected drives. Check Local Disc C. Under What to Sweep, check every box.

Click on Sweep and allow it to fully scan your system.

When the sweep has finished, click Remove. Click Select All and then Next

From 'Results', select the Session Log tab. Click Save to File and save the log somewhere convenient.

Exit Spy Sweeper.

Restart your computer <<< very important

2) Download this program: http://www.funkytoad.com/hoster.htm Open the program and click on #4 Restore Original Hosts.

3) Disable the offending Service
Click Start < Run and type services.msc then OK
Scroll down to Command Service and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.

Delete the offending Service
Open HijackThis and click Config -> Misc Tools -> Delete an NT service.
In the Delete window, type cmdService and press OK.
OK any prompts, close HijackThis, and restart your computer.

turn Microsoft AntiSpyware off, it will block the HJT fix. best to be offline.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(if these are there check and remove them, if they are not there that is ok)

Darn it, lost my post. Oh well, here goes (again).

Running Spyswweper seems to have done the trick. It seems to be much more thorough than the other 3 programs I had used, detecting and removing things that they couldn't. Before I did the sweep, Spy Sweeper was coming up with alerts continuously, afterwards there are none.

A lot of the other steps didn't apply, since the things were not there (for example, "Command Service" was nowhere to be seen). I think this is because I had managed to partially get rid of a lot of what I had manually, before I made the first post. I had checked (carefully) a lot of my running processed and tracked down the ones that should not be there and deleted the files.

Now as for the Spysweeper log, there is an issue. There were many (zillions) of occurreneces of the following message:

1:39 AM: Warning: Windows Messenger Shield: Could not open Messenger Service. Error: The specified service does not exist as an installed service

The logfile itself is 1.38 megabytes due to the many appearances of this message. In between large chunks of that is the details of the actual sweep and removal process.

I'm not sure what the cause of this message is (other than it seems related to Windows Messenger) or if it's even a problem, but anyway the log is far too long to post here. I guess I could find somewhere to actually host the text file and give a link to it, if you like. I tried to edit the message out of the log and just leave the pertinent parts

Here is the new HTJ log though:

Oh, and I didn't remove Flashget - I've got an old version that can be installed without any adware and has never given me any problem with popups.

Anyway, I'm no longer getting any popups, so the main problem is fixed. Thanks so much for your help.

Hi Luke, I'll have a look. You said:

and that's ok with me, it is your computer. I am never happy with a product that bundled spyware to start with. If you are sure it is safe, then go for it.

Anyway, I'm no longer getting any popups, so the main problem is fixed. Thanks so much for your help.

A lot of folks worked hard with SpySweeper to update it so it would fix this trojan. Only bad thing is the trial runs out :( So don't get that one again :P

Messenger Service <<< not Windows Messenger which is a chat installed like MSNIM but this comes with Windows XP. See this: http://www.itc.virgi...s/messagepopup/ and this: http://grc.com/stm/s...hemessenger.htm Just understand that I turn this service off the day I startup a new computer. Don't confuse it with Windows Messenger which I disable in case MSN Instant Message is down. Ofter I can use Windows Messenger to chat with contacts until MSNIM is back up. I hope this helps.
