Browser Hijacked

Despite continued warnings to a computer novice my partner decided he just had to click on a pop-up ad for some spyware removal product and now I have been called in to clean up the mess. He is getting the dreaded flashing triangle in the lower system tray with a pop-up message saying he has malware/spyware/trojans that need removed. He clicked on it and all hell broke loose. When I was called over yesterday there were 23 different browser windows open at once. When you closed one another one would instantly open. I managed to get spybot search and destroy downloaded and installed. It didn't cure the problems but it did notice the internet explorer homepage attempting to be changed each time on startup. Also I cannot open explorer on the said computer.
Problem pop-up message only starts to pop up when ethernet cable is plugged in. here is my hijack this log:
