Here is my log below. Installed on my computer is Spyhunter 2.0 Microsoft Antispy Beta 1, Ez Armor Anti-Virus and Fire Wall and Registry Mechanic 4.0. When I try to download Service Pack 2 for my XP Pro OS on the restart my start menu locks up and can't access certain functions on my start menu. Then after a while I get the Dr. Watson Post Mortum Debugger Error Message the only solace is to unistall service pack 2 in safe mode and boot to normal to get back the functions. I was at the Dell site and was referred here about this problem. It said maybe I have the wicked about:blank hijacker. I have had it and got rid out it but it might be coming back in a different variation because I have read there are at least 100 variations of the darn thing.

Hello Cooltrc , Welcome to the forum.

Important: Do this before any fix.

Please put your HijackThis in it's own folder, (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT).
You can do a Right Click on any open area on the desktop, New> Folder, then rename the folder HJT.

Go to where your HijackThis is and Right Click on HijackThis.exe, select Cut, then open the new folder you just created (HJT) Right Click in the folder and select paste.

The reason we do this is Hijackthis creates backup files just in case you'd need to restore one and we'll be cleaning out the temp files.

After the above:

Download CWShredder from my signature below. Unzip it on the desktop.
Open CWShredder and with ALL other windows closed, click fix.

Go here and run at least one of the online scans, allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.3 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.05 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode check Perform full system scan.
Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Ok I did what you told me. You see anything that might be a threat still. Plus I noticed like in my outlook express if I get a email that has a href link and I click on it and my IE does not open then I get a crash flicker where my icons disapear and my desktop wall paper fickers then they come back and everything is fine. Plus when I use IE it crashes a few seconds after a close it though as long as I am browsing it is fine no freezes or crashes. Right after I close it the crash flicker happens then everything goes back to normal. Thanks for helping me thus far.

Download DelDomains.inf
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf

Right-click and select….. Save Target As….Save

To use: Right-click and select……. Install (no need to restart)
**Note** This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone"

I suggest you do this:

Run HijackThis again and put a check by these.

O15 - Trusted Zone: http://chat.msn.com

ALL 016's. They'll come back if needed,

O19 - User stylesheet: (file missing)

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Search for and delete these files if listed:

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Ok here is my new post I did all the things you said to do. I have noticed no more freeze flicker and I can access a href in my emails I get in Outlook no more crashes and my web pages now like jump on my screen when I surf much faster. So if you see anymore stuff that looks fishy before I attempt to Install the Service Pack 2 again let me know. Everytime I had tried before you helped me clean up my files I got the Dr. Watson Post Mortem Debugger Error. I will not attempt to install it again untill you think it might work. Right now my puter is smoking and I have a Anti Virus and Firewall so I can really do with out the XP service pack 2 for a while but I would like to install it. Thanks for outstanding help thus far!!!!

Good Job

Log looks good :D

After doing the below, go and try the XP2.

You have your Hijackthis in a temp folder but shouldn't need it anymore. This will remove it, so if you still want it, move it to a permenant folder.

1. Open My Computer
2. Right click on your hard drive that you wish to clean (C drive, for example)
3. In the context menu that opens, select properties
4. Under the general tab you should select Disk Cleanup
5. Windows will scan your drive which will take a few seconds/minutes
6. A box will display the various files you can remove.
Check all boxes except compress old files (If listed)
7. Click OK and windows will comply.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Click Start> My Computer, select the Tools menu and then Folder Options, after the new window appears select the View tab…]
This time select the: Restore Defaults
Select: Apply, and click OK

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
:( Hey there thanks for the help man! My computer is working fine service pack 2 is installed and running! I have another question and maybe you can help me. It is with another problem that is Phone Dialer related. Ok here it goes. When I use the Phone Dialer as soon as my call has connected my microphone stays on but my speakers cut off. People can hear me but I can't hear them. I can hear the dial tone and the numbers being dialed but as soon as it connects the speakers cut off. mic stays on. I had researched the Microsoft site and found this look! SYMPTOMS When you try to use Phone Dialer in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) or in Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 to make a voice call, a video call, or a conference video call, the call may be disconnected immediately after you dial. Note The Windows XP SP2 features and components are included in Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005. CAUSE This issue occurs because a firewall prevents Phone Dialer from connecting with the other computer. When you install Windows XP SP2, Windows Firewall is turned on. If your computer or the computer that you are trying to connect to has Windows Firewall or another firewall turned on, port 1720 may be blocked. WORKAROUND To work around this issue in Windows Firewall, follow these steps:1. Click Start, and then click Run. 2. In the Open box, type wscui.cpl. 3. Click OK. 4. Click Windows Firewall. 5. On the General tab, click to clear the Don't allow exceptions check box. 6. On the Exceptions tab, click Add Port. 7. In the Port number box, type 1720. 8. Click TCP. 9. In the Name box, type the following text: 1720 port opening for Phone Dialer 10. Click OK. 11. Click to select the 1720 port opening for Phone Dialer check box. 12. Click to select the Display a notification when Windows Firewall blocks a program check box, and then click OK two times. To configure Windows Firewall to permit Phone Dialer to call, follow these steps:1. Click Start, and then click Run. 2. In the Open box, type dialer.exe. 3. Click OK. 4. On the Phone menu, click Dial. 5. In the Connect to box, type or select a computer name or an IP address. 6. Click Internet Call, and then click Place Call. 7. When you receive a security alert for TAPI 3.0 Dialer and for IP Multicast Conference Viewer, click Unblock this program, and then click OK. Note If both computers have Windows Firewall turned on, follow these steps on both computers. ——————————————————————————– APPLIES TO • Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (SP2) • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 (SP2) • Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition Service Pack 2 (SP2) • Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 I have done this serveral times and nothing I never get the security alert for TAPI 3.0 Dialer and for IP Multicast Conference Viewer to unblock. I know you have been very useful to me and if you don't have any insight on this that is fine you have done plenty for me already!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok thanks. Oh one more question maybe you have insight. I noticed my moden is half duplex. My modem is the Lucent Winmodem and has Unimodem Half Duplex driver on it. How do I upgrade to full duplex? Do I need new sound card or modem or updated Unimodem Driver? This might be why my Phone Dialer is cutting off as soon as I connect. One last thing do you know any free software or where to go to look for a program that is like Phone Dialer but more up to date. I am just looking for a dial out program to make calls through my computer or headset by using a phone line from my modem (no VOIP) just like Phone Dialer would do if it would work. Off to the PCPITSTOP!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks
