I appear to have adshooter for the second time in 6 months. I installed both adaware and spybot after I had it the first time - had to complete reformat my hard drive to get rid of it. Please help!!

Hello Marie, Right you are, below I have listed the lines indicating this infection. There is a little more. I wish first to indicate that Ad-aware and Spybot are both great programs (and they should have removed this for you) but they need help to stop the bad stuff from getting on your computer in the first place and the fact that neither program identified and removed these items makes me wonder if you have the latest versions, if you are updating on a regular basis, and if the programs are properly configured to do the job. I will use HJT to clean this infection but I will also give you links to two tutorials so you can check to find out if you are up to date, won't work for you if you do not:
Ad-aware:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial48.html
Spybot:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial43.html

Please look at the HJT.exe on your Desktop. It must be in it's own folder to store backups in case of a mistake and logs you create. If it is not in a folder, please make on and move HJT.exe into that folder.
Desktop\hijackthis.exe Please do not start the fix until this is done.

Here is the adware:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSfit.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SYSfit] C:\WINDOWS\SYSfit.exe
AdShooter adware variant
http://computercops.biz/startuplist-6557.html

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [DR_S] C:\Program Files\DR_S\DR_S.exe
AdShooter adware
http://computercops.biz/startuplist-4700.html

Enable hidden files for your Operating System:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind…showtutorial=62

Open Task Manager then choose the Processes Tab. Look for and end process on anything that looks like AdShooter:
SYSfit.exe
DR_S.exe
AdShooter
(or any other alias)

Scan with HijackThis and check each of these line items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.yahoo.com/search/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [DR_S] C:\Program Files\DR_S\DR_S.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SYSfit] C:\WINDOWS\SYSfit.exe

Close all prgrams but HJT and all browser windows then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete the following files or folders:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSfit.exe >>> file

C:\Program Files\DR_S\ >>> folder

Run Cleanmgr: Start Run then type "cleanmgr" without the quotes then ok. Check and remove anything windows locates. Empty the recycle bin and restart the computer. Use the following two links to make sure you stay in this same thread:

Post a new log for a final check along with your feedback.

I am including two links that you may need in the future when thinking about SP2.

Let's try again. I had trouble finding some of the files listed, but I have run some other spyware programs since posting the original log. My spybot and adaware are generally updated monthly and I just updated them a few days ago trying to find this little bugger.

Regarding SP2. I have heard so many questionable things about the update. Is your opinion that I should go ahead and do it? My computer does keep "telling me" that the update is available, but I have not downloaded it yet.

Thanks so much for your help!

Marie

Hello Marie, Concerning the SP2, that is a decision you will have to make. Many folks have downloaded it and it works perfect, others have not be as successful. The reason I gave you the links were to order the free CD and have it on hand and so you can learn how to ready your computer for it if you install it. The computer has to be clean of malware for one thing, well I will just let you read what Microsoft says you should know before installing it.

My spybot and adaware are generally updated monthly and I just updated them a few days ago trying to find this little bugger

I update weekly, and run after I update and also after a busy day of working logs. I also run several proactive programs that stop the stuff before it gets to the computer. You will get this information once you are cleaned up.

You missed some stuff, I will schedule this one more time. I left the Yahoo Home Page, the rest is junk, Red Swoosh and search plugins. If you need a good search engine, try the Google Tool Bar. Best search engine there is and stops popups also.
Pat yourself on the back, you killed the real baddies. Get rid of this junk, give me one more log and I will give you great information to keep you clean and safe online.

Scan with HJT and check these items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.yahoo.com/search/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://start.earthlink.net/AL/Search
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click "Fix Checked"
Empty the recycle bin and restart
Surf a little, then post the new log along with your feedback.

Thanks…pskelley

Trying this again. I deleted the remaining problems (I thought) then went online and played a bit before redoing the log. The HKCU\software\Microsoft\Internet Explore\Main,search bar= http://www.yahoo.com/search/i.e.html was either back or I didn't get it the first time. I deleted it again, then went online a little and checked again. It appears to be gone now.

How does it look to you now? Thanks so much for your help!

Marie

OK Marie, Give yourself a pat on the back, you have cleaned your first log. :P
I should point out that there are free training opportunities if you are ever interested in learning more about how to keep your computer clean and help others.
Since you have a clean log, here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to keep you clean and safe online.

Now I have Ezula! Norton is scanning it but not removing it. It flags it as a high risk threat, but does not give me any means to delete. I'm hoping it shows up on my HJT log and then you can help me again!

Thanks

Hi Marie, Quite a while went by there, have you reviewed the information at the links to stay clean I posted for you? I will post a link here where you can view tutorials to make sure you have the programs set for maximum safety:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorials.html

Is Earthlink your internet provider. The sure have a lot of junk in your log. I see no sign of the item you mentioned, your log is clean. Use HJT to remove these three items below, they are just search resource wasters. If you don't use Earthlink, let me know and I will clean out the junk.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://start.earthlink.net/AL/Search
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://start.earthlink.net/AL/Search
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - ~CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)

You may have to turn SpywareGuard when you try to make changes or at least allow changes as they occur if you get messages from the software.

It is possible Norton updated is seeing something in your System Restore files, let's purge them, do it like this:

MANUAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR SYSTEM RESTORE
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Empty the recycle bin and restart the computer, post another log as soon as possible, please do not let two weeks go by, let's quickly make sure all issues are corrected. Let me know also about Earthlink.
Thanks…pskelley

I had done pretty well for that 2 weeks, then this started showing up. Really slows the computer down. I may have found the file on my drive. I did some research to find other names it might be under, found the file and deleted it, then re-ran Norton. That was yesterday, as of this morning Norton is not picking it up again. I do use earthlink, although I am looking at switching. I only have access to dial up. I did have a question. On the zone firewall, it brings up everything wanting you to pick whether to allow it or not, but often can provide information or recommendation as to what to do. How do I know what to allow and not?? I'll re-run the log and re-post. Thanks Marie
Hi Marie, Good job locating the problem, it did not show in the HJT log, and running your AV or other online scan is the only way to kill it them.

On the zone firewall, it brings up everything wanting you to pick whether to allow it or not, but often can provide information or recommendation as to what to do. How do I know what to allow and not??

Right click on the Zone Alarm icon near the clock and choose restore ZoneAlarm Control Center. Then make sure you choose Overview to the left side and that you are on the Status Tab. In big bold black letters on the right column is TUTORIAL. Open that link and spend a little time learning how to use your FREE software. Thanks…pskelley
