I get frequent popups in IE that I cannot stop or find the cause. I am using Pop-Up Stopper Pro but as of late it is unable to connect for updates however it is working. I also ran and am running SpybotS&D, Giant Anti-Spyware, SpySubtract, A-Squared, Spysweeper and Ad-Aware 6.0 and have malware and deleted them but none has fixed the continuing popups. I also have noticed that now I have a slight pause in OE when I select a mail message and how fast it appears in the viewing window. Using msconfig to check startups I have 2 unknowns and a IE search for even a reference of them has 0 results. The 2 unknowns are 'yuwoiy' and 'yghpuy'.

Hello argodan, Welcome to TomCoyote forum, Your version of Ad-aware is outdated. Use these links and the tutorials within them. Make sure you Have Ad-aware SE Personal Build 1.05 and Spybot S&D 1.3, then update both programs before running them and make sure they are configured according to the instructions within the tutorials.
Ad-aware:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial48.html
Spybot:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial43.html

Them since those items you described sound like trojans, run these two free online scans having the clean or fix anything they locate:
http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

Please record any item these four programs locate and can not remove, along with the name and location of the item.

Run your cleanmgr: Start, Run type "cleanmgr" without the quotes then ok. Remove anything windows locates, empty the recycle bin and restart the computer. Use Add Reply to stay in this same thread. Post a new log along with the information from the scans and any feedback you think we should have.

Thanks…pskelley

Thank you pskelley for the quick response. I followed your instructions and it seems to have fixed all issues, the popups and the hesitation in OE.

Ad-Aware and Spybot both found numerous intruders which I quarantined for now. The 'windows security trojan scan' did not find anything. The TrendMicro on-line scan found 3 references to the 'narrator' trojan. That was the 'yuwoiy.exe' file I had questioned. That would not clean but I was able to delete them. I ran TrendMicro 3 times until it came up clean.

The 'yghpuy.exe' still remains but further searching here: http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_pages/startup_full.htm regarding the prefix says: 'O4- Enumeration of suspicious autoloading Registry entries. Startups from the registry. Despite the name-many legit programs show up here. Ignore entries that you recognize to be from a legit program. Use this website to find out what the rest of the entries are.' Continued search has no reference to this .exe so for now I am assuming it's a legit entry. There is reference to it in my HijackThis log but no reference at all in any of my Ad-Aware scans. I also cannot disable it.

Thanks Again
ArgoDan

Hi argodan, I will only need the HijackThis logs. I am concerned about references to CoolWebSearch.
I would like to to use the following link, all the information is good and review it all, but I wish you to start at this point: Step 1: Download CWShredder.

I must point out that you have added TeaTimer to Spybot S&D, it is a very good program, but because of it's nature, it will not allow changes to occur, so you will need to turn it off during all of the changes. It will be turned back on when you restart the computer.

Download and run CWShredder according to instructions. Make sure you update the software before running it, and that you choose FIX not scan.
Please let me know if CWShredder locates anything. I am concerned as this is a nasty infection.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial47.html

I must make sure the HijackThis199.exe in not on a CD. It can't make backups for safety if it is. In that case, please open MyComputer to the C drive. Right click on a blank spot and choose New Folder. Name it HJT, then move the HijackThis199.exe into that folder. It will look like this:
This is what I see:
E:\Internet Downloads\Software\HijackThis\HijackThis199.exe

This is a safe position:C:\HJT\HijackThis199.exe

Please enable hidden files:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind…showtutorial=62

Scan with HijackThis and check these items:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {90DE6548-41DA-4FBB-AC8D-AA1CB148D7E6} - (no file)
O4 - Global Startup: yghpuy.exe

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows then click on "Fix Checked" Then post a new log in the same thread, please include feedback as before, but I will only need the HJT log.

Search for this item: yghpuy.exe and if you locate it, delete it. Empty the recycle bin and restart the computer.

I feel we must remove this item: yghpuy.exe, let's see what happens with CWShredder and the balance of the fix, and what a new log shows.

Thanks…pskelley

Hi pskelley, Did all you specified. Already had CWShredder but update window said unable to connect at this time. As described on the tutorial page, it might try to prevent it's removal, I ran cwssmartkiller first and it came up empty. Then running CWS it also came up empty. I then ran HJT and checked the 3 items you mentioned and chose Fix. Ran HJT again and it showed they're gone. I also did a search of My Computer and came up with a reference to 'yghpuy.exe' in Windows\pss and the Windows\prefetch folders. I moved those to the recycle bin for now. I did a reboot and went to all folders that had reference and all was well. I checked startups in msconfig and yghpuy.exe is no longer there. Here's my current HJT scan.

Thanks, argodan

Log is clean, great job. How is it running? Here is also some information about SP2 that you may want on hand.

I am positive that is bad, just let it set there for a day or two, once you are sure you are running well, empty the recycle bin, you can empty that prefetch folder also, just the contents, not the folder. I also think we should flush System Restore to make sure nothing is hiding there that might get back on your system if you had to use the SR function for some reason, follow these instructions:

MANUAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR SYSTEM RESTORE
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Hi pskelley, I cleaned out SR and did begin reading the other links you sent. Everything is running great at this point. I'm running a P4 3.02ghz w/ 1g ram so when things hesitate a bit I notice, then I begin looking around. I have a habit of just checking from time to time just to see if my startups are in order. I was unable to get any info on the unknowns so decided the forum was a way to go, I'm glad I did. Although I was running the anti-spyware I had, it obviously wasn't as effective as the programs you led me to. Thanks again. I just got the Norton Systemworks 2005. Now that my machine is clean again, I thought I'd also install Go-Back when I upgrade. What are you're feelings on this as opposed to SystemRestore or using both. Thanks, argodan
Well, since you are asking for my own thoughts, I use McAfee, and my understanding is there are many bugs in System Works, also that is a resource hog. You seem to have enough resources for it to hog though. I also suggest you post a printed copy of your HJT log on the wall and make a point of knowing what everything on that log is. I run my log at least once a week looking it over for anything different. I will include links below to where you can learn about all items on your computer. I also believe that System Restore is plenty adequate and as long as you maintain backups as a normal course of owning a computer, you are in good shape. Here are the links I mentioned and good luck:
