I've been having problems lately with numerous pop-ups. They appear in IE windows, even though I use Firefox only. I also get Windows Data Execution Prevention messages that restart windows explorer (My toolbar and any explorer windows that were open get shut down and explorer gets restarted) several times a day. I've tried Spybot, Ad-Aware, CCleaner, NOD32 and nothing has worked so far. I think most of the popups say ExciteExchange, mysafetrip, and carsdirect…or somthing similar to those. Hope I've given enough info…here's my hijackthis log.

Welcome to Tom Coyote . Sorry about the delay in responding but we are as most times just overwhelmed with logs.

Do this first.

Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and remove VSToolbar

Then, open HJT Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, check these and click on Fix Checked

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing :
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Once your system is clean, we suggest that you reverse this to keep critical windows files from accidently being deleted.

Boot to Safemode and delete these files and folders.

To Enter Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode
  • Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard
Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode

F:\WINDOWS\system32\mouse_configurator.win
F:\Program Files\VSToolbar

Reboot normally and run this system cleaner.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
