When I open up Internet explorer, I start getting numerous and never ending pop-ups one right after the other. I've used AdAware, Spybot and Spycatcher which seems to find the problem. I fix them and then reboot, but it continues to occur. Here is my HJT logfile after I ran the aforementioned programs and rebooted, but before I opened Internet Explorer.

Help, please....as this problem makes web browsing unbearable.

Hi ruflin,

You have some malware on board which we'll get rid of. However first I need to check a couple of things.

Is williams.com a domain associated with your work or is it otherwise a trusted domain?

I can't find much out about these programs:

InfoBox24.exe
WGPDBupdater.EXE

We'll upload them for checking but if you have any information on them please let me know.

Please upload files for scanning:
Open http://virusscan.jotti.org/
Copy/paste this file and path into the white box at the top:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\InfoBox24.exe

Press Submit - this will submit the file for testing.
Once the scanners have all finished checking the file, copy the results for pasting into your next response.
Then, repeat the process for

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\WGPDBupdater.EXE

Note: If Jotti is busy, you can use VirusTotal instead.

Next we need to temporarily disable Tea Timer - please leave this turned off throughout the cleaning process as it will interfere with changes we need to make. We'll re-enable it when you're clean:

Temporarily disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.
First:
  • Right click Spybot in the System Tray (looks like a calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • Choose Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second:
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, check Advanced Mode
  • Go To Left Panel, Click Tools, then also in left panel, click Resident
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • Uncheck the box labeled Resident TeaTimer and OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot.
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
Then download ComboFix to your desktop
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • Note: Do not click ComboFix's window while it's running - it may cause it to stall!
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you, please post it in your next response.
Now open HijackThis, select Open the Misc Tools section
Press the Open Uninstall Manager... button, then press Save list...
Save the Uninstall log to your deskop and include a copy in your next response.
Now press Back and Scan and then Save log to create and save a new HijackThis log.

Once complete, please post the Jotti results, the Combofix report, the uninstall list and a new HijackThis log.
The logs may not fit into one post so please check that they are complete and use multiple posts if necessary.

Yes, I may still need your help....since my original post, I have used StopZilla quite a few times, but I think I may have finally eliminated the problem. However, could you please verify this based on the following information that you requested in your original reply. FYI - I unistalled SpyBot several days ago, so I didn't need to disable the TeaTimer. Don't know if this is useful, but the problem first surface on 7/29/2007 in the early morning hours.

Thanks for your help.

Hi ruflin,

Yes I can confirm the likely cause of your symptoms is no longer active. You should however follow these instructions to find and delete the bad file if it's still present:

Make hidden/system files and folders visible:
Click Start -> My Computer
Select the Tools menu, click Folder Options and select the View tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Show hidden files and folders
UNCHECK the Hide extensions for known file types option
UNCHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Click Yes to confirm and press OK

Use Windows Explorer to find and delete the following file (if present):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\__c001692A.dat

If it's not present then don't worry, but if you have trouble deleting it, please let me know in your next response.

Some further issues:

Your Java is outdated and is now a security risk
Go to Start » Control Panel » Add/Remove Programs
Find and remove Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
Download and install the newest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) (version 6 update 2), from here:
http://java.sun.com/...loads/index.jsp

You have files in a system directory which I can't verify, I recommend you upload them to Jotti for checking:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\196C4195-5838-4B6B-A01A-19ED82897576.cxv
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\E12ADC71-EDA6-4CE6-B2E1-A3A5F0CFF691.cxv
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\41E0D560-8F93-4E1D-81E2-849DD4EDC5FC.cxv

You have a registry entry which restricts changes to the Internet Explorer control panel. This is sometimes put in place by security software like Spybot - please let me know if you wish to remove this restriction.

You also have registry entries which may restrict or disable Windows Update. This may have been put in place purposefully, please let me know if you wish to remove this restriction.

I also recommend you perform a full scan as follows:

Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save as Text button and save the file to your desktop
Once complete, please post the Jotti results, the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log.
