This computer gets page can't be displayed on IE anywhere I try to go. I know there are some things that shouldn't be on here but I'm not sure what causes this problem. I have run spybot search and destroy but it can't seem to get rid of n-case and a DSO exploit even after a restart. Also, right after logging on a notifyalert.exe error pops up with an OK and a Cancel button. I don't want to start deleting the wrong things. I thought someone may have a quicker solution than looking into these things one at a time. Here is my log…

Thanks…

Thanks much Micah. I cleaned up a bunch of stuff by hand and got it working again. I will clean up what is left that you posted and post a new log. Thanks, Rob
OK, everything between what I did by hand and what you told me to do seems to be gone. The only files / folders on the system were the last two in the list. I was showing hidden files.

Spybot still finds n-case and a DSO exploit when run and can't fix 2 of the problems related to the n-case problem even when running at boot it finds them all again and can't fix the 2 related to the n-case problem.

Here is the last log. Looks like a couple of O16s that weren't there before.

I've been to the classroom some and fixed a computer here at work that was pretty messed up with almost no help so I'm starting to get the hang of it.

For my information, what is a BHO and what is a O16?

Thanks Micah.

I went back and turned off the hide protected operating system files setting and then I found all of the rest of the files and deleted them (in normal mode). The winad client folder is gone because I uninstalled that using add / remove programs from before. Spybot still comes up with n-case and DSO exploit even on boot and can not remove the n-case problems. The DSO exploit just re-appears at every boot. The only thing I can see left is what appears to be cookie from 180solutions. Good work!

The only thing I see in the log that needs "fixed" is this:

O16 - DPF: v3cab - http://searchmiracle.com/cab/v3cab.cab

Then reboot.

A "BHO" stands for "Browser Helper Object".

They can be "good" or "bad". Typically, this is what get's hijacked on a PC to redirect you to unwanted web pages.

An "O16" is an active-x component loaded onto your machine by a web site you have visited. They can also be a source of infection. It is usually safe to "fix" them (especially ones you don't recognize). If you accidentally "fix" a "good" one, it will just get loaded on your machine the next time you visit the web site it came from.

From SWI forums concerning "DSO Exploits":

As long as your system is fully patched = all Windows Update "Critical Updates" installed. Then this is a non-issue and you can put that item in the "Ignore List"

Run SpyBot, click Settings, select: "Ignore Products"
Click the Security tab and place a check in "DSO Exploit"

Your system is "fully patched", so it would be safe to put the DSO exploit on the ignore list.

To finish cleaning your system, I'd suggest running Spybot and Adaware (please download and install it if you do not have it already) one more time, make sure they are UPDATED AND CONFIGURED AS DESCRIBED here:

http://www.cjwd.demon.co.uk/spybot-adaware.html

Reboot after running each program.

If you have the time and patience, it wouldn't hurt to try as many of these online virus removing tools as you can:

Trend-Micro Housecall

Panda Activescan

Etrust Security Advisor

Choose "fix" or "clean".

Let them remove any infections found. Reboot after each scan.

Please post back and let me know how things go. :)
Well, I think this is about as clean as it will get. It's working well again. I am going to put ie-spyad on it and give it back. Thanks Micah. The problem you helped me with on my own system is completely cured and the entries ie-spyad made has kept it clean. I appreciate your help and so do my infected friends.
Great!

I'm glad we could be of assistance.

That's what we are here for.

GOD bless!!!!

M68 :)

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?" here:

http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957

Download IE-Spyad here:

https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings here:

http://browsercheck.qualys.com/index.php

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.
(Personally, I'm NOT recommending SP2 for XP at this time)
