IE Browser Hijack ?

During my PC startup, the Microsoft Internet Explorer screen appears and the bar at the bottom says its trying to go to the following site:

http://mynbx247.info/phpbb/index3.html

Then, I get a "page not found" message

It tries to do this twice.

When I close the "page not found" screens, the system is OK and I can click on the IE icon and my browser start page appears.

So, right now, I have the IE screen opening twice at startup and its trying to find the site listed above.

Any help in removing the unwanted IE start up would be appreciated.

Micah…

I followed your detailed instructions and I believe my problem is solved. The IE
browser no longer opens at startup.

Here's the details of what I did:

1) I ran Hijack This and checked/fixed those entries that you listed in your reply.
2) Closed Hijack This and re-booted in safe mode.
3) In safe mode, I turned on "Show hidden files".
4) I deleted the files/folders that you listed. I did a search on four files that you listed:

c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\sfg_7527.dll
windowsup.exe
w32usb2.exe
wowpos32.exe

The search could not find these files.

5) I re-booted normally and my problem (the IE browser appearance at startup)
was gone.
6) I used the housecall on-line virus scan and it found four uncleanable Trojans.
I followed the instructions to simply delete the files

7) I re-booted the system and I ran Hijack This again.

The HJT logfile is given below.

It appears your instructions solved my problem….thanks for your help!!!!!

Log looks good.

You are welcome.

GOD bless you!!!

M68 :)

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Download/install IE-Spyad

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings at Qualsys.com

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.
