Micah - Please Help

Hello Micah (or anyone else that would be kind enough to help me out). I'm back again with another problem. It appears that I have a trojan virus which used to route me to a site called http://yoursearcher.com (obviously do not click on this link). I followed instructions posted on the following TC Forum thread:

http://forums.tomcoyote.org/index.php?show…rcher\.com

However, when I got to the last 2 steps (HJT/hidden file deletion), they were different than the person who posted the thread. Now it appears that the yoursearcher.com routing is no longer there but I am still routed to a "about:blank" search engine under the guise of some microsoft search. Anyway, it looks like I should start from scratch, so here is my HJT log. In addition, I think something might be interfering with my ability to run Yahoo messenger (similar to the first person's problem on the above forum link). I'd appreciate your help as usual!!! Thanks.

You have a different type of infection.

There's a program called AboutBuster that should take care of your problem.
Just download and unzip it to a folder, inside the folder you will find a readme file, please read it for instruction on how to run the program (it's real easy).
Please check for updates, it's a three step process, hit the update button, check for updates, drag box to the side, under it hit the download updates, should be #'4'
There IS an update so make sure you download it <–this is important

http://malwarebytes.biz/AboutBuster.zip <—AboutBuster

Before you run AboutBuster I would get a free virus scan here, it does target the hijacker and you should run it a couple of times with a reboot in between.

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

When you are done, post a fresh HJT log in this thread. :)
Micah- I encountered 2 problems: 1) With the free online virus scan, my IE crashed once it seemed to get through about 1/2 way. So I never got to an endpoint where I was able to "clean" any files as far as I could tell. 2) I downloaded the AboutBuster file off your link. However, after I clicked on the exe file (whether it was unextracted or extracted from the zip), an error frame came up which read: "Corrupt database: The database is either corrupted or missing. Please download a new one." I hope there's something left that can be done???
CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This! and fix these items:

Reboot in "safe" mode. Use the link in my signature to tell you how if necessary.

Find and delete:

c:\documents and settings\paulgun\application data\aeao.exe <— file

c:\windows\appwu.exe <— file

c:\windows\ntzx32.exe <— file

c:\windows\svchost.exe <— file

c:\windows\system32\windnf32.exe <— file

c:\windows\system32\zrgzb.exe <— file

c:\windows\winwd.dll <— file

DO NOT ACCIDENTALLY DELETE AN IMPORTANT SYSTEM FILE!!!!

c:\windows\svchost.exe <— DELETE!

C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe <— KEEP!!!

Please note the difference!!!!

Some malware files may be "hidden". Use the link in my signature to explain how to show "hidden" files if necessary.

Reboot in normal mode. Try the virus scans, and try to re download a fresh copy of about-buster.
Micah – there were 3 problems I encountered with your most recent instructions, and currently, the infection is still on my computer. Here are the 3 problems:

1) When I rebooted in safe mode and deleted the hidden files, only one of the files was not there: "C:\windows\winwd.dll" – so I was unable to delete this particular file because it wasn't there (I also searched the computer for a file/folder with that name and nothing came back).

Otherwise, everything went smoothly until…

2) The online virus scans – same problem as before. IE crashes.

3) AboutBuster problem – same problem as before (even when I tried to redownload it again starting from scratch). Corrupt data.

Anyway, I don't know how much things have been modified but here is my updated HJT log. You'll obviously noticed that all the #29126 registry keys have come back after having been deleted before…

Please please let me know if you have other suggestions:

Let's start here, and I'll consult some experts on your About-Buster problem.

The first thing I need you to do is download the file from here:
Getservice.zip

Extract the file to the c:\ drive. Then navigate to the c:\getservices and double-click on the getservices.bat file. A notepad will open up. Please paste the contents of that notepad as a reply to this post.
:)

Hi Micah 6:8 asked me to drop by and look at this. Could you try this for me.

The 'Search' function within Windows XP will not automatically show hidden files even if your folder options settings are set to do that. Do this so you can see hidden files and folders - click here to download xphidden.zip. Extract xphidden.reg from the zip file and save it to the desktop. When done, double-click the xphidden.reg and when asked to merge say yes.

Find, zip and send these files:

C:\windows\system32\windnf32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\sysav32.exe

to this e-mail address including a link to this thread in the body of the email

Press Ctrl>Alt>Delete to bring up Task Manager. Click the Processes tab and double-click the Image Name column header to alphabetically sort the processes. Scroll through the list and look for the following entries, end the process on each if found:

windnf32.exe
sysav32.exe

Next, click Start>Run and type Services.msc, hit OK. Scroll down and find the service called "Network Security Service". When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then OK and close any open windows.

Open HijackThis, scan and when complete, remove the following entries by checking the box to the left and clicking 'fixed checked':

Reboot into safe mode by tapping F8 after the BIOS has loaded, find and delete the following:

C:\windows\system32\windnf32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\sysav32.exe

Boot back into normal mode. Click here to download cwsuninst.zip. Extract cwsuninst.reg from the zip file and save it to the desktop. When done, double-click the cwsuninst.reg and when asked to merge say yes.

Run HijackThis again and post a new log in this thread. Try to download About:Buster again - let me know.
Micah & Daemon:

I did most of what you said (not all b/c of some snags)…but the good news is that that the infection no longer appears to be on my computer (but I must admit that I am scared that it's still dormant and waiting to erupt again? – i feel that way only b/c of the snags).

Here were the problems I had with your instructions:

1) I was unable to find "C:\windows\system32\windnf32.exe" so I could only email the other file to the address as requested.

2) Since I was unable to find "windnf32.exe" in my processes, so I could not end that process.

3) When I went to the "Network Security Service" portion, I could not click on the "stop" button (it was shadowed out, along with the "pause" and "resume" buttons). I'm not sure if it mattered much because I was still able to change the startup type to "disabled."

4) After the safe mode reboot, I still was unable to find "windnf32.exe" so I could not delete it.

5) I still had the same problem with the About:Buster extraction (same problem as before).

Anyway, here is the latest HJT log – thank you so much for helping. I hope this is solved… Finally – I was wondering if I need to go back to the Network Security Service and re-enable it? Please let me know…

The 'missing' file must have been an orphan entry - I've been after that one for a few days now

Network Security Service is a component of the hijack. What we did earlier was stop the hijack with the initial manual method but there's likely to be hijack components still on your system. I have uploaded a self-extracting version of About Buster here.

Download it to your Desktop, double-click it and click Unzip. It will install to C:\AboutBuster.

Then, do this:

Click here to download CWShredder by Merijn Bellekom and run it, hit 'fix' as opposed to 'scan only'. Reboot when done.

Click here to download Spybot Search & Destroy - install, update, scan and fix all RED items it finds. Reboot when done.

Click here to download Ad-Aware SE and install. Before scanning click on "check for updates now" to make sure you have the latest reference file. Then click the gear wheel at the top and make sure these options are checked green:

General>: "Automatically save log-file" and "Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal".

Scanning>: "Scan within archives", "Scan active processes", "Scan registry", "Deep-scan registry", "Scan my IE Favorites for banned URLs" and "Scan my Hosts file".

Tweaks> Scanning Engine>: "Unload recognized processes during scanning", "Ignore spanned files when scanning cab archives" and "Scan registry for all users instead of current user only".

Tweaks> Cleaning Engine>: "Automatically try to unload modules before deletion", "During removal, unload Explorer and IE if necessary", "Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot" and "Delete quanatined objects after restoring".

Click "Proceed" to save your settings, then click "Start", select "Perform Full System scan" and "Next" to start the scan. When the scan is finished, the screen will tell you if anything has been found, click "Next". The bad files will be listed, right click the pane and click "Select all objects" - this will put a check mark in the box at the side, click "Next" again and click "OK" at the prompt "# objects will be removed. Continue?".

Reboot when done.

Click here to download System Security Suite. Extract it from the zip file into a folder.

Now double click AboutBuster.exe that you downloaded earlier. Click OK, check for an update and after making sure you have the latest version, click Start then click OK. This will scan your computer for the bad files and delete them. Save the report (copy and paste into notepad or wordpad and save as a .txt file) and post a copy back here when you are done with all the steps.

Open System Security Suite and doubleclick on sss.exe. Check the boxes under the 'Items to Clear' tab and click 'Clear Selected Items'. You will be prompted to reboot, do so. Repeat for all log-in accounts on your computer.

Rescan with HJT and post a new log - let us know what happened as you applied the above fixes.
Micah & Daemon:

Thanks a lot for your explicit instructions. All of the steps went without a hitch. First I will post my About Buster report and then my HJT log. Let me know if you see any residual junk. Thanks again!!!
