I have a trojan that I can't get rid of (Win32.apropo), as well as my homepage being changed to uchase.com (unvoluntarily).

I have tried Spybot Search and destory (found nothing) and Spyware X-terminator (always running - I would like to leave this running) which caught the trojan and said it would be deleted on the next reboot, but it never is. I am sure there is a way to manually remove it, but I am NOT computer savy and don't want to mess anything up (work computer). Also, my computer has been running much slower lately (mostly on the internet) and my homepage changes to www.uchase.com on every start - even after I try to change it back (I didn't go into regedit though). Additionally, I have been getting a ton of pop-ups lately.

Can anyone please lend a hand? Basically, I just want to clean things up. Thanks a lot!

Here is my log.

Spyware X-terminator (always running - I would like to leave this running) which caught the trojan and said it would be deleted on the next reboot, but it never is.

Download the latest version of Ad-Aware here:

After installing Ad-Aware, and before running the program.
Please be sure to update the reference file following the instructions here:

Reconfigure Ad-Aware for Full Scan:

Launch the program, and click on the Gear at the top of the start screen.

Click the "Scanning" button.
Under Drives, Folders and Files, select "Scan within Archives".
Click "Click here to select Drives + folders" and select your installed hard drives.

Under Memory & Registry, select all options.
Click the "Advanced" button.
Under "Log-file detail level", select all options.
Click the "Tweaks" button.

Under "Scanning Engine", select the following:
"Unload recognized processes during scanning."
Under "Cleaning Engine", select the following:
"Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."
Click on 'Proceed' to save these Preferences.

Run the Ad-Aware scan and allow it to remove everything it finds and then REBOOT to allow it to finish.

Then post another log.
Thanks for the reply little eagle.

The Spyware X-terminator is run by PestPatrol, so it seems legit (and it was put on my computer by the IT guy at work, and seeing as this is a work computer I would like to keep it on there).

Anyways, I have ran the latest version of SpyBot Search and Destroy (1.3) as well as the latest version of Ad-Aware (kept freezing up when I tried to check off what I wanted fixed/deleted - so I don't know if it was having a conflict with another program or what). My homepage problem has been fixed, but there still seems to be a trojan hiding somewhere.

Here is my new HJT log…….what do you suggest?

Thanks a lot!!!

Download then unzip and run CWShredder to clean up clicking "FIX" to have it remove all it finds.

CWShredder available from these places :-

http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads.php
Or this as a full download without any unzipping required
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/CWShredder.exe

We have found that some of the CWS infections can be removed better from safe mode, rather than normal mode.
To get to safe mode use the F8 key while booting the machine. Detailed instructions from here :-
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen…001052409420406

And copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in. Since Temporary folders are emptied now and then (the files are DELETED), it would not be a good idea to have your backups there. Those backups would be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

1. Please go to you're 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' then name the folder 'HJT'.

2. Copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

3. Close ALL windows except HJT

4. SCAN with HJT

5. POST the new log in this thread using 'Add Reply'
The CWS said my system came back completely clean (did it in safemode). Here is my new HJT log.

Thanks for your help!

Reboot and Rescan with HJT and post a new log here.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

For the following file, I want to make sure it's not a valid system file before removing it. Right click on it and go to Properties.
Then go to the Version tab to see what company name it's from:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\TAPISRV1089p.

I checked that file out, but it didn't have a "Version" tab. I looked at a few other files that had similar names and they all had Version tabs and were Microsoft products……….so, I don't know.

When you ask about my computer behavior……….I just did the fixes you suggested, so I haven't had the opportunity to see how it responds yet. However, before these suggestions, my computer was running a little slower than usual, IE was a little slow, and I was getting a lot of popups……..other than that, no real "issues".

Here is my new HJT log.

Thanks again! Anything else that you suggest, or am I good to go?

Please read through the ideas and free software listed below that will help to keep your computer clean.
Some of these you may already have installed or may have done already.

Install a firewall.ZoneAlarm FREE

Ensure that an Antivirus is updated weekly and running. AVG antivirus from Grisoft is a very good FREE antivirus program.

Make sure you have the latest critical updates from windows update. (SP2 seams to be doing good)

SpywareBlaster will prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.

IE-SPYAD puts over 4000 known 'bad' sites into your IE restricted zone so that they cannot install malware on your PC.

Google toolbar has a very good built in popup blocker with a nice search bar. To provide privacy, select disable advanced features when installing.

Check your system for latest virus definitions with an online virus scan every week or two.
TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan

Check your system for latest trojan definitions with an Online trojan scan also every week or two.

And also see this link for additional security information.
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Please consider using Firefox

So, in your opinion my log looks good now? My computer seems to be running quicker and everything appears great! (knock on wood). Thanks so much for your help and insights. I will definitely look into your suggestions in an effort to keep this kind of thing to a minimum. Thanks again, I really appreciate your service! :D
