Hi. I was hoping someone could help me. I'm really not computer savvy but I've tried everything within my poor troubleshooting capabilities. I seem to have gotten some kind of Trojan that has disabled my Symantec Antivirus program and redirects my Google searches through coolwebsearch. I found this explorer folder in the C:/Windows that created an endless sequence of Program Files, etc. folders, which seemed strange and I didn't remember it being there before so I deleted it. I tried to do a system restore to two days before but it didn't help. I found this site and I tried to follow instructions, downloading HijackThis to give the log in my post, but after downloading and running HijackThis, I hit the button to do the scan and save the logfile. The scan lasted about 2 seconds and then the window disappeared. When I tried to go back into HijackThis I got a message that it cannot access the specified device, path, or file. Is it possible that someone can still help me? Thanks!
Hello acsant and welcome to the WTT forum.

My name is Satchfan and I would be glad to help you with your computer problem.

Please read the following guidelines which will help to make cleaning your machine easier:
  • please follow all instructions in the order posted
  • please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear
  • all logs/reports, etc. must be posted in Notepad. Please ensure that word wrap is unchecked. In Notepad click Format, uncheck Word wrap if it is checked
  • if you don't understand something, please don't hesitate to ask for clarification before proceeding
  • the fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • please reply within 3 days. If you do not reply within this period I will post a reminder but topics with no reply in 4 days will be closed!
IMPORTANT:

Please DO NOT install/uninstall any programs unless asked to.
Please DO NOT run any scans other than those requested

===================================================

Download/run Rkill:

Please download Rkill from one of the following links and save to your Desktop:

Link One
Link Two
Link Three
Link Four

  • Double click on Rkill.
  • A command window will open then disappear upon completion, this is normal.
  • Please leave Rkill on the Desktop until otherwise advised.
Note: If you get an alert that Rkill is infected, ignore it. The alert is a fake warning given by the rogue software which attempts to terminate tools that try to remove it. If you see such a warning, leave the warning on the screen and then run Rkill again. By not closing the warning, this sometimes allows you to bypass the malware's attempt to protect itself so that Rkill can perform its routine.

You may have to make repeated attempts to use Rkill several times before it will run as some malware variants try to block it.

You'll be able to tell when rkill has done its job when your desktop (explorer.exe) cycles off and then on again.

===================================================

Run DDS

Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.

DDS.scr
DDS.pif

• disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
• double click DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run)
• when done, DDS.txt will open.
• after a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
• save both reports to your desktop.
• Post the contents of the DDS.txt and Attach.txt reports in your next reply
===================================================

Run aswMBR
  • download aswMBR.exe to your desktop.
  • double click the aswMBR.exe to run it
  • if asked, accept the AVAST virus definition download
  • click the "Scan" button to start scan
  • on completion of the scan click Save log, save it to your desktop and post in your next reply
Logs to include with next post:

DDS.txt
Attach.txt
aswMBR log

Thanks

Satchfan
Thank you so much for your help! So far, I'm stuck at the Rkill step. I get the same message that I got for HijackThis that Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. Leave the message up, I can't click again on Rkill.
OK, let's try this one - it's a bit more hammer-like :P

Run RogueKiller

Note: Do not reboot your computer if at all possible otherwise the malware will reactivate and you will have to run RogueKiller again

Download RogueKiller to your desktop.
  • close all running programs
  • for Windows Vista/Seven, right click -> run as administrator, for XP simply double-click on RogueKiller.exe
  • when prompted, type 1 and press Enter
  • the RKreport.txt will be generated next to the executable, (on the desktop).
If the program is blocked, do not hesitate to try several times. If it really does not work (it could happen), rename it to winlogon.exe
Please post the contents of the RKreport.txt in your next Reply.

Remember: do not reboot your computer if at all possible otherwise the malware will reactivate and you will have to run RogueKiller again

Satchfan
Again, thank you so much! Below is the .txt.

Try running DDS and aswMBR now

Satchfan
So I ran the RogueKiller again and got the report. I ran DDS and got the two reports. I then tried aswMBR and it started to scan but then it stopped and the window disappeared. When I tried to go back into from the desktop I got the same message I got for HijackThis and Rkill. Here are the reports I did get. I really can't thank you enough.

Tr running aswMBR in safe mode:

To Enter Safemode
  • go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
  • as the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY - this will bring up a menu.
  • use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode
  • then press Enter on your keyboard
Hi. I tried to run aswMBR in Safe Mode but i got the same message. I couldn't get online on safe mode to post the results so I had to reboot to the normal startup. Doing this however, my keyboard does not work upon startup. It works during the booting, so I can go select safe mode again and but even in safe mode my keyboard won't work, so I can't do anything on the computer once windows starts up. Is this fixable or do I have to reset the whole thing now? I'm sorry for all the trouble and thank you so much for you help.
Hi acsant

Try this to get your keyboard working:• restart your computer and hit the F8 key constantly until a menu shows up
• use the arrow keys to navigate to Last Known Good Configuration
• press Enter
================================================

If this has worked and you can access the Internet, please do the following:

Download and run ComboFix

Download Combofix from either of the links below. You must rename it to acsant123 before saving it.
Save it to your desktop. Change the save as file type to "all files"
  • If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
  • Tools->Options->Main tab
  • Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

Link 1
Link 2

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
  • NOTE: If ComboFix asks to install the Recovery Console, please ALLOW it to do so.
  • Double click on the renamed ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you. Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Thanks

Satchfan
I tried to get my keyboard working by selecting the Last Known Good Configuration but the keyboard still does not work when windows starts. Is there anything else I can do?
A few questions about the keyboard:

What type of keyboard is it? Is it a wired, wireless or laptop integrated keyboard?

How is it connected, usb or PS2?

If it is not a laptop keyboard, do you have another keyboard that you could try? Note: If you try nother keyboard and it has a PS2 connection, you must plug it in before booting up the computer.
One thing you could try is this: First, shut down the laptop completely. Then, unplug its power cord and remove the battery. Then, hold the power-on button down for a good 30 seconds. After 30 seconds, reinsert the battery and power cord, and try rebooting the laptop. If that fails, try attaching an external keyboard. If you can log on with that then the problem is likely with the laptop keyboard.
Hello acsant It has been several days since I sent a reply with suggestions to help with your computer. Please let me know if you are having problems and still need help. Thanks Satchfan
