okay, didn't love the 2010 closed 2 posts on Windows updates…. gawdesses-amighty, not for the weak of heart and geezer stoooooopid compudodo types who haven't a clue about anything MR. Zrucker posted —again, sorry, might have mispelled that, but it was all greek to me Mr. Z

okay, now that you know my stupidity level high high high on the dummy scale, can i just say that phone number posted is for Microsoft (AKA the enemy thank you very much) and you get an option for Windows issues, it's a PAID ONLY service!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  see?  they force you to put up with their constant updates and then you have to PAY to try to find out how to stop them?  And um, I am savvy enough to presume they won't like me asking how to stop the updates.

so all you helpful erudite geniuses out there, i don't mind the security updates, but i did TAKE EXTREME UMBRAGE at the forced upon me undeletable update that put Microsoft Edge on my computer  two weeks ago.  I have two computers, one is on it's last legs, but i can't replace some of the things i gots on that old computer, so i had my local computer genius guys patch it up, but it's a no win situation and they warn me it's gonna fail, fall apart really really soon.  I bought a nice used older really sturdy DELL that must must have a newer version of Windows 10, as there is no way to uninstall ANY UPDATES, that option when you go into programs, recently installed updates, is greyed out, you click on their recent update, and it grays out with no option to do anything….as far as the Edge APP, you get a little pop up about "Change", you click that and nothing happens.

so call me an  antediluvian freak, i don't care! go ahead, but no rude comments please, i hate this tech world.  "THEY" have taken over everything, they track everything, the intrusion is INSANE and short of trying to move to tax-horrific-wild-fire-horrific-earthquake central California (where you have rights to control the madness forced upon public with all this intrusion… and gotta love the pot laws too, just sayin' :) ) which i can't do livin' as i do on a fixed income now…what's a nice old geezergal gonna do????  HELP…. i can't afford my local genius guys rates, they are wonderful, they found me this super fast used old Dell for the wondrous price of $159 which i adore except for the Windows version that doesn't allow me to delete any update.   My old old old hunka junk Lenovo from Walmart (ok, i know, my computer guys rolled their eyes when i told them where i bought it, LESSON LEARNED…. DON'T buy a computer on the spur of the moment because it had such a nice red color.  yup, that's me. stoopid to the max)  but at least I have been able to uninstall all the recent updates.  And that took courage, because who knew?  It could have just blown up in my face folks, when the latest update tried to download.  and couldn't. and forever my laptop would have been just a grey screen forever.  but lo and behold the miracle, when the latest update came through this week, it said it couldn't download!!!!!  hurray!!!!!! and here i am still using the darn thing.

so anywho, i know i rant on and on and on.  again, be kind. please. it ain't easy being in quarantine for almost 10 months now ( lol, at least i had the smarts to do it in January when the first report of death in China came thru) with a bullseye on my back for imminent death at my age and physical unhealth :(

IS THERE ANY WAY YOU THINK I CAN STOP THESE UPDATES ON THE THIS OLDER REFURBISHED DELL….. AND yes, I know, I'll try to figure out what model i have and will have it by the time anyone might post a reply.  thank you oh so very very very much for reading my diatribe confessional, those who remember me when viruses were attacking every day, know my verbosity is legendary… and annoying as heck….but i claim immunity from censure on the grounds that it's just nice to try to write an entertaining informative overly wordy post 'cause my brain cells need the exercise.  I love being back here, i do. sincerely and gratefully do… you mods are the saviors of the tech insanity. :adios:  :wall: :rant2: :rant2: :rant2: ,,,, okay too many emojis but I LOVES the emojis here!!!!!!!! so funny!

Perhaps you could post a link to my post you  are referring to as I have no idea what you are talking about.

I stopped reading your post about half way through. Too many words, too many complaints, not enough info to understand what yopur problems are and what you want help with.

Start with one problem and we'll see if we (that's the royal we of course :D ) can help.

I really would like a link to whatever post of mine you are referring to at the start of your rant though.

Mr. Z,  what? huh?  i don't know how to send you a link, see?  this is the problem.  just go to the new member forum and the very first post is by LDTATE and you replied.

my issue is MICROSOFT (the evil empire) is downloading updates i do not want. period.  i don't mind security updates. but they don't give me any option on this computer to uninstall ANYTHING. NOT ONE DOWNLOAD CAN BE UNINSTALLED.  I click on the update, and it grays out. that's it, can't uninstall it or change it, which is an option on my older computer that is not long for this world.  I want to stop the updates, except for the security.  that's all. it's my computer and i hate that they willy-nilly just put microsoft edge on my computer and i have no say-so.  i am not a pawn in their game

edit:  also, now they just automatically install them when i start up my computer, i don't get a notification about updates, nor the chance to choose a time and date.  this version of Windows is nefarious and when it knows you like to uninstall…it just goes and installs everything all over again (which did happen) and then all of them are now there permanently, with no way to uninstall.

What version of Windows 10 do you have? Click on the Start button, type winver and press Enter. A window will open with that info. It will look similar to this:

Next read through this tutorial. There is a long, ongoing discussion  but give the tutorial a try. May do what you need.

How to Enable or Disable Automatic Updates for Windows Update in Windows 10

Well i now know what version i have but i think i will have to bow out, i didn't understand anything about the options and what option is easiest or i should use.  i'm hopeless on these things.  really.  i shall now crawl back into my hovel and try to stop trembling.  thanks for putting up with me.  it's just so humiliating to be so darn stoopid on these golldang machines. :wall:   i won't return, i promise :smack:

Wrong attitude.

Try again.

If you now know what version of Windows 10 you have, please post the information as requested.  The answer to that question will provide guidance as to which options are available as not all options are available to every version.

Without that information, no one can help you.

I am not good either but if you do one thing at a time these people can help  you.

I had an awful time trying to learn but if one keeps trying, one can learn.

* You may have a set up that won't work as it should traditionally but let us make believe you have a traditional set up for a moment.

If so, Go to the lower left of the desktop which is 'start' and click it. Then click 'settings. Now click 'update and security' then "Check for updates". Click that and see if it updates. If it does not it may mean Windows has already updated for you. If you want to see if you have updates while you are where we left off, click on 'view update history' and check the dates under "definition updates."

Does any of this make sense to you?  Last thing = do as Ztruker asked and in the lower left, click on a search box or circle and type winver then click - it will tell you what version of Windows you are using -this helps the forum. If you could not find a search box or circle the click on start again and find windows system at the bottom and click on that. Then type winver in that. That will tell you the version of windows you are using. Go step by step slowly and report back .

Any luck
