I was given a brand new Dell Inc. Inspiron 5770 for an early Christmas gift. It came with 8092 Megabytes Usable Installed Memory with Slot 'DIMM B' has 8192 MB (serial number 2351AEBB) and Slot 'ChannelA-DIMM0' is Empty. I was wondering if I can buy another stick of what is in there to install in the empty slot. I have never installed RAM for a laptop and it's been about 12 years since I did it for a desktop. Is it as easy now as it was back then?
Your notebook can accommodate up to 32GB of RAM (2 Xs 16GB sticks) see info @ Crucial here you can confirm this by running the system scanner tool also available at the link.
Upgrading the RAM requires removing the base of the notebook, video here
Some further info, the present RAM being only a single stick will only be working in single channel mode (50% of what it is capable of) adding a second stick will give you dual channel which means the RAM will function at 100% of its available speed.
NB: Please note that if the present RAM is DDR4 2400MHz that is the maximum speed that you will get, adding a 2666MHz will not increase the speed as the faster RAM will be clocked back to the same speed as the DDR4 2400.
Thank you so much. Your explanation and videos are just what I was looking for. Thank you so very much. Would not have my choice for a laptop, but he meant well.
Nice enough computer but like most if not all brand name computer manufacturers they use a single stick of 8GB RAM to save themselves a small amount of cash, 8GB is more than adequate for the average user and using 2 Xs 4GB sticks so that the RAM runs at the maximum speed would be far better.
